Probably because people believe that to shine at this sport you must attend a private school. If the game was fair dinkum it would open the competition up to all commers. A competition played in a seeded fashion would help develope the code. And I love the game but check out the ratings for the televised Shute Shield. We have to improve the comp and the player base if we are to grow. The game has an elitist feel at the present moment and the punters will not cop it. The game is presently insular at the moment in this country.

St. Augustines College 64 - Mudgee High School 10 (I think)

It was little more than a training run for Saints; so it was hard to judge their form and more so because some regular starters played from the bench.. The Mudgee lads did their best but were not big enough, skilled enough nor fit enough to hold the Brookvale lads out for too long in the match.

They started off well but soon 1. Apineru Manu started bashing them up by forcing them to try to tackle him. It wasn't much joy after he was replaced either because the bloke who ran on, John Mokofisi the regular LHP, was just as destructive.

4. Rhys Dombkins, who was chosen for Oz A Schools this year, had a terrific match with ball in hand. He has the makings to be a fine no.8 as a senior player, methinks 7. Tim Conlon and 8. Dylan Maestri also played well though they are not the biggest lads for their position. I didn't notice 6. Sam Vaka playing; so maybe he is injured.

10. Sam Brisby stepped like Quade Cooper on steroids, or, for older folk, like Brett Papworth. You can see his background in touch footie as he was reluctant to let anybody touch him. Later this Puck was switched to the wing and acquitted himself well there also. 12. Purcell, like Lloyd Walker but stronger breaking tackles than Lloyd on his best day, was the linchpin.

13. Hingano was withheld by Papa for about half an hour and then he did his things, though one of them was a pass that was easily intercepted for the only Mudgee try. The Oz Schools outside centre looked like a swan amongst the ducks and it is rare to see a 13 so comfortable with the ball in hand and able to use it, let alone a schoolboy one. If he stays in our code he will play Super rugby one day.

It was hard for the Mudgee lads to shine but 10. Sam Muller, who was a reserve for NSW I Schools this year, did as well as anybody could expect him to play in the circumstances. He is a Noddy Lynagh type of tactical flyhalf and sweet kicker, both from hand and for goal.

It was a good effort from Saints though sometimes they had too many fellows in the backline when two waves may have been more productive – though that happens in easier games. They did one thing better than I have seen any other school team do this year, or for a few years: staying on their feet and making yards with strong, small steps. Hingano is not a huge strapping lad but he played like one in the tackle, Purcell was the same and let's not mention the forwards to whom staying on feet was probably a mantra.

One wishes that the Oz professional players did the same.

St. Augustines have had a good year to date and have 7 of their regular starters returning in 2011. Watch this space.

Brave words, however would love to see a St Augs (who must be shoe in favourites to win the Waratah) vs New game with both teams at the top of their game, on a dry day. Guess the best we will see with be the Hills SHS vs St Augs.

To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing stopping GPS schools from enterring the Waratah Shield.

The reasons why they do not are many and most likely very complex.

Don't know if the thread has already been done and dusted here in Gaggerland, (I suppose that it has probably been done to death) but on Sportal before I was sumarrily banned, there was a reasonable positive vibe for an Premier league Schoolboy rugby competition.

A number of permutations were proposed that allowed such a competition to be undertaken, whilst still managing to play a ISA, CAS, GPS competition simultaneoulsy.

Dreams are free, and I can see entities with entrenched and vested interests with lots to lose and little to gain, would do their darndest to ensure that this never came to fruition.

Timings for these games?

Double header on Monday, Auggies v Prairewood. Games at 1 and 2.30, I believe. Hingano unavailable for Final if they progress due to Oz schoolboys.

Awful broken leg to the Mudgee winger on full time today. My picks at head quarters were (4) Dombkins, (2) Kaufman, (9) Paul, (13) Loselli, (15) Trim with (10) Muller and (8) Field from Mudgee trying hard all day. Cannot warm at all to Brisby, flashy individualist. HSH will expose and embarass. But great to see Holmes boys finally doing a bit of liaison for the Rats with the Auggies team after the game.

That was a nasty accident at full time. I could hear the crack from his leg 50 metres away. Good luck to the lad.

Hills will certainly take some serious stopping. A few issues to settle, big fast, ballrunning types more suited to a league environment but have enough unionites to balance the picture. Should be a great dust up.

That will be a pity but it does make sense of why John Loseli started at 13 yesterday for Saints - and one wouldn't be surprised if he got substantial time there in the semi either, all going well.

I understand why you didn't warm to 10. Brisby: he is a bit of a show pony. But in other games I have seen him in this year he hasn't done his Fred Astaire routine as much as in that one game against Mudgee.

He entertains - I'll say that for him.

What about Domkins? are Aust A in camp as well?
Also I heard that seage is unavailable as he is in League camp as well. Can anyone confirm either of these?
Will be one hell of a game regardless.
Predictions anyone?

Seage is not in a league camp. He is injured, his good hammy is injured and he is and has been unavailable since the CHS trials. Seage is no longer with a leagues club. He is fully signed to the sevens ARL programme. As for the Fiji match all players approached to play for NSWCHS, Aphone, Skelton, McCallum, Mafi ect will be turning out for their school team in the Uni Shield. Jason Havea will play against the Fijians.

Australia A go into camp on Thursday this week for their game on Saturday. The final is played the following Monday so Dombkins is available for both the semi and the final if Auggies make it

The teams will likely not be announced at all. Typically at schools games you get a team sheet from the hosting school as you walk through the gate or you get it from the canteen. At the Q/Final match on Thursday there was no hosting team and no team sheets; so there probably won't be any at the S/Final.

If you like I could give you a list of Thusday's St. Augustine's team which I got from Papa (let me know and I will type them out for you) - and observer would have a fair idea of the Hills team.

I have no idea who will be in the Stannies or Prairiewood teams and looking through the rep team lists, if they are an indicator, they don't have a lot of stars.
