The Kings Speech was a great movie, probably my pick for movie of the year followed by The Social Network.

Just seen "Blue Valentine" with my wife. Probably the worst movie I have ever seen! Absolute rubbish.
I liked the Kings Spech. Great performances fromFirth, Rush and Pearce and Bonham Carter is still a looker.

Just saw Animal Kingdom on the plane and enjoyed it. If you liked it and want to see other similar aussie flicks then check out:
- The Boys from the late 90s with David Wenham and Toni Collette.
- The Idiot Box also with Ben Mendelsohn.

Saw it last night. Liked it. Can't see the fuss about Jackie Weaver. But Mendelsohn was fantastic.

Beneath Hill 60 was an amazing film. On par with Gallipoli as a far as war films go.

No, it's not.

It's far, far, far better. Gallipoli is - and I appreciate I'm treading on thin ice here - tendentious rubbish, which plays silly buggers with the truth. Beneath Hill 60 is better made, and accurate, without the "Anyone English is evil" balls that distorts Gallipoli.

I first read about those mines in Charley's War, in Battle, when I was about 8, and then more in Birdsong. Beneath Hill 60 is as good as both of those, which is about as high as praise gets. Cracking, cracking film.

Saw the A-Team last week.

Whilst it isn't going to be a classic it surely is fun. With quite a few laughs.
Belief does need to be suspended in a few scenes.

Sharlto Copley (District 9) steals the show as Murdock.

Does he what. He flips accents like a mad thing, and has an absolute ball doing the role. Only his second film, too. I mean, sure, it's no Wikus - because Wikus are mos flippin' awesome, ne? ;) - but it's enormous fun to watch. And I'm an '80's child, so you can take that as the official seal of approval.

"The Castle" ... my favourite Australian film.... ostensibly a comedy...it embodies a very sensitive portrayal of family life and triumph over adversity...

if we are doing Castle quotes love the ones from his Lebanese neighbour - here, plane fly over house and people complain. In Lebanon plane fly over house and drop bomb!

ahhh, the serenity....

got a couple that are out on dvd now but went right under the radar.

first up is Special, with all the superhero films out there at the moment, this is the best one of the regular joes become superhero movies. Absolutely beautiful and disturbing at the same time (and well linked to GAGRs job, hope you like it mate)

next up is a swedish vampire movie, "let the right one in", unfortunately its in subtitles so those in qld wont be able to follow the fantastic story but its also one of the most strickingly beautiful films ive ever seen. its not the action packed movie the trailer suggests, its more about suspence and isolation but the pay off is fantastic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZJUgsZ56vQ

Is the fact that Qldr's won't be able to follow it is because it is strickingly beautiful?

Have a week off from work so trawled through the local video shop and brought home a few selections from the week-release section. A couple of highlights:

Seven Pounds. From about 2008, with Will Smith. Didn't really hear much about this when released, and didn't get great reviews. But I thought it was really good, and had me thinking for days after. A few twists and turns, and I am a big Will Smith fan and as always he is good. But worth a watch.

The Final Winter. Local movie from a few years back based on Rugby League in the 1980s. Not as much about footy itself but the players and introduction of big business into the game. I thought it was one of the best sports movies I have seen in ages, and the bloke in the lead (an ageing prop forward facing retirement) was superb. Matthew Johns as the coach was also surprisingly good. Low budget but you hardly notice it, it is very well made.

Yeah, was an OK movie from basically a bunch of amateurs. I think the guy you refer to was also the author, Matt Noble or something similiar. He played lower grades for Manly late 80's I think

Saw Love and Other Drugs. Don't get why they are marketing it as a romantic comedy, because it's not, and it's not much like its trailer either. It's not a bad movie at all, and provided a few funny and touching moments. But it's also not great, mainly because I think it doesn't know what it is: it jumps around from commentary on big pharma, sales people for big pharma, the emergence of viagara and use of over the counter drugs, the stuggle with early onset Parkinsons, as well as the primary relationship between a disilliusioned and chronically ill female and bed hopping male. Plus it has Ann Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhal (sure I didn't spell them rightly) naked for 1/3 of the movie, which sorta didn't fit it exactly. But it was entertaining enough, ignoring the saccarine Hollywood ending.

A bunch of ex St Pauls Manly students were in this Newtown Jets fictional team. Matt Nable played some lower grade stuff. His brother Adam some stuff for Balmain and Souths. His dad was a trainer with Manly in Fulton's time and brother Aaron an accomplished amateur boxer who was featured as a rising star by the SMH. A good movie.

I watched "the girl with the dragon tattoo" and "the girl who played with fire" last week. Both of them were excellent films, I thought the second was better than the first. Now I'm looking forward to the third installament to come out...
