Yep - "Painless" Roza Sage is the new boss. She got 38% of the primary, 4% to the CDP, and 58% split between Labor + Greens + strong local independent. If the lefties had got some preference deals together they would have won this seat.

Anyway, like everyone else, I'm surprised at the Greens' lack of traction in this election. Have they got no money, or what? When I went up to the pub to buy a couple of beers, the independent (Janey Mays) was giving her thank you speech. I learnt that her campaign cost $100K. She had fantastic presence on posters, leaflets, and online, and the bloody Green candidate had nothing. I wrote to the NSW Greens and gave them a spray.

Christ, what the fuck is it with the No Parking Meters party? A whole column of candidates. They're taking the piss.

They have to have at least 15 candidates in order to have a single above the line grouping, otherwise anyone voting "1" above the line for them would be registering an informal vote (a legislative council vote must register the equivalent of at least 15 choices below the line). Most parties run at least 16 in case one candidate dies/is found to be invalidly registered/goes insane and tries to shoot their local member.

As a side point, I numbered all 311 boxes, primarily so that I had the opportunity to put Eric Roozendal at 310, and Pauline Hanson at 311.

aiming for next election Moses? I'm in as long as our policies include the banning of rugby league and media suppression of the AFL.

Yeah the Greens have had a miserable showing so far. They should have picked up at least 10 seats. Shows you the organisational and funding issues they must have. When Bob Brown goes they will go down the gurgler like the Democrats I reckon.

That said I don't think people associate state politics with green issues.

Hey! The Democrats are coming back and served a vital and functional service in Australian politics!

The big red mark on this election would have to be the fact that the CDP and the Shooters will probably hold the balance of power in the LC. I am particularly concerned about the possibility of the Shooters/Fishers trying to wind back of our National Parks and Aquatic Reserves (extending game seasons to include some N.Parks, permitting recreational participation in culls in N.Parks, and eliminating Aquatic Reserves), and the CDP taking aim at the KC Injection Room, which is the single most effective piece of drug policy we've ever had in this state.

Given the power of the Christian right in Liberal party, this might not be a great time to be on any social fringe. I'd be nervous, for instance, if I was a member of the Mardi Gras organising committee. The Labor party had to go, but I hope that the internal Liberal pollsters understand what the majority of the electorate actually wants. I think most people in the community want action on planning and infrastructure, and I can't imagine the vast swathe of moderates who've voted Liberal are going to be particularly forgiving if what the state gets instead is some Hills District nut job's social agenda.

Well put spdg. I think we're all kind passengers from here til the next election though, and probably much longer given the size of the majority the coalition now has. I don't have a whole lot of faith in politicians of all creeds keeping their word but I'm ready to cut the libs a bit of slack for a couple of years and wait and see.

It just better not be any worse.

If the Shooters Party gets the balance of power, that would be the single greatest thing to come out of this election.
Just imagine the policies on aquatic "reserves" being science based, we may even be able to fish at Fish Rock again, and trips to Jervis Bay would involve fishing, rather than spending half the trip planning around the imaginary line designed to keep pelagic species safe.

Hey! The Democrats are coming back and served a vital and functional service in Australian politics!

Please tell me this isnt a joke & they really are back, in NSW? or anywhere is good. It certainly didnt help the Aus Demo party when many of their supporters jumped ship to go to the Greens, for mine the Aus Demo party was the much better 3rd alternative. I'd like to see a NSW Aus Demo party lead by Turnbull.

Yep, as a lesbian, I can tell you I'm not overjoyed about the libs getting more power. They are more likely to try and undo or block all the good work people have done & continue to do to increase equality & social justice. A lot of people are talking about infrastructure & that's great but I'd rather live in a run down town where I have some chance of gaining equal rights rather than live in a great looking town where I'm a marginalised/2nd class citizen. That being said Labor needed this kick in the pants. Voting was a nightmare for me this time around, couldnt bring myself to vote for anyone so I just ended up drawing a whole heap of rude bits on the ballot pages & handed them in.

Talking to traditional labor votors in Newcastle I've noticed a lot have been pissed off with labor but have still voted labor out of hatred or/& fear of the liberals. Greens voters dont seem to have the slightest idea about economics or infrastructure or dont care about these things period but to give them their due they give a stuff about helping others & creating equality even if it doesnt benefit them. Lib supporters I talked to only talked about what they stood to get, it's all 'me, me, me' & not one word about society at large. As you said I hope the Libs dont mistake being voted in as a sign people want to turn socially conservative & that it is more about infrastructure.

As others have said I dont trust pollies but I'm prepared to reserve final judgement after seeing how the libs perform.

...and did anyone see the 'Outdoor recreation' party WTF do they stand for, a mandatory 3 day weekend so we can all go jet skiiing?

The outdoor recreation party's slogan is "Smart Green, not Extreme Green". They represent the interests of those who like to get outdoors and enjoy this country.

To sumarise their homepage, they stand for Less government control, smaller government, less regulation, greater personal choice, greater personal responsibility and lower taxes.

I disagree. I'm an extremely keen angler, and I am completely in favor of aquatic reserves. The Jervis Bay marine park fishing exclusion (sanctuary) zone occupies about a 1/5th of the total marine park, and I've never had any problem working out where you can fish and where not, though admittedly I've been going down there for years, and so am pretty familiar with the area. Most fish being protected in sanctuary areas are not pelagic, like the black cod at Fish Rock, and even catch and release are harmful to these species.

We need areas of coastal reserve where you cannot fish, not just bag limits and protected species. I am happy to accept this, particularly as these areas account for less than 3% of our coastal fringe. I've been involved in various surveys of marine reserves in the Sydney area, and it is clear that even small reserves have an effect on overall biodiversity. The cabbage tree bay area, for instance, has undergone a clear improvement since the introduction of the reserve, one I can personally attest to as I've been snorkeling there since about 1997.

Thanks for that info Moses. I was in the Army reserves for about 6 and a half years and one of the reasons I wasnt keen on the Greens was the amount of restrictions they wanted on our operations training activities, mainly shooting, camping out bush, digging pits and 4WD/Trucking. Obviously this then crosses over to regular camping activities once back in civvie st. I'd have to check them out more but based on their liberal views + the outdoorsy stuff, they actually sounded like a good option. I'm certainly all for less regulations.

And this is why I need to look more into them, I've fished but I dont know enough about the fishing side of things to be sure I'd pick them next time.

The Jervis Bay exclusions are pretty ordinary if you want to go land based game fishing. Sure it's 1/5th of the water, but this includes 9/10ths of the accessible ledges

Big Bazza banged a few heads together a few years ago and told Greg Smith and his crazy Christian cohorts they had to get inside the tent or piss off. After this occasion branch-stacking by and open warfare from the loony right stopped. It's pertinent to note two openly gay candidates stood for the Liberals in this election, in Sydney and in Coogee. It looks like the Coogee bloke will get up.

I think we'll find photo opportunities of O'Farrell and his family attending church on Sundays, a la Kevin07, but the influence of the conservative Christians will be minimal.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that the Greens didn't get Marrickville cause Liberal gave their preferences to Labor?
