Sorry for the semi Political thread but it is Rugby focussed. I am sure Barb et al will move if they deem inappropriate.

Today I read a very disturbing article on Julius Malema. It appears that he is a likely candidate to take control of the ANC and if he isn't the new President of SA he will be the power behind the throne so speak. Given his disturbing opinions and policies what it the consensus view of the impacts of this on SANZAR and SA Rugby?

Can you link to the article, or at least explain to us what this guy is about?

Sounds interesting.

Agreed. What's this guy all about?

But surely it can't get too far worse from the current PdV debarcle.

He is the 30 year old leader of the youth arm of the ANC, with a penchant for singing racist dirges. He is a favourite of Zuma, so he gets away with just about anything.

Is he the one who likes to sing songs about killing Boer farmers?

Edit: Yep

THE ruling ANC today defended youth leader Julius Malema for singing, “shoot the boers, they are rapists”, saying the lyrics of the song had been quoted out of context.
...
Malema is facing a criminal charge and a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for reportedly singing at the University of Johannesburg, “Dubula amabhunu baya raypha” (Zulu for, ‘Shoot the boers, they are rapists’) with a group of students.

The song is reminiscent of the late Peter Mokaba, a former ANC Youth League leader known for chanting the slogan, “kill the boer, kill the farmer” during the struggle against apartheid.
The Freedom Front Plus laid a criminal charge against Malema for allegedly advocating hate. The Afrikanerbond lodged a complaint with the SAHRC.

Malema is pretty much fucked up. Afriforum is testing him all the time in never ending court cases.

Tried to photoshop him and got this message.

Didn't Zuma have some fairly extreme views around employment law? Apart from his poor knowledge of HIV/AIDS as health minister (wash it off in a shower WTF!), I remember people were seriously concerned when Mandella was set to retire, has Zuma ended up being ok?

Ja Zuma had us all worried, Mandela made us pot up tin food but this vokken Malema is something totally different. He sound like a Mugabe case.

Very scary individual.

White extremists were replaced by Black ones. In my eyes, extremists of any distinction are trouble.

Having heard some of the stories firsthand from Clyde Rathbone's younger brother about the home invasions and assaults, it really is scary how unruly and dangerous life can be over there. Jake White won't know what hit him when he settles in Canberra!

Even the amount of interference at schoolboy level rugby left me astonished, as for the pro's... well PDV being in charge is evidence enough of how out of whack the system is.

Our sport would have been a total different story if we could only do the basic of picking on merit. This excist in SA till schoolboy or club level. On provincial level its all about the number game.Myself experienced this one month ago first hand and the biggest sorrow about it is that its a lose lose situation for the kids.

Malema look like providing far bigger risks then sport for our country. Maybe he'll prove me wrong but the kak coming out his mouth at this moment is really scary.

I couldn't imagine what it would be like for black kids getting picked in rugby teams in south africa. I expect that even if they did earn there spot they would still always be a question mark over their position due to quotas and the like. Not a good situation at all. You have to pick on merit.

I can't find the article ATM, to paraphrase basically said, Malema cites Mugabe as a idol of hours and supports seizure of asl white controlled assets by the state and forcible nationalization of all mining assets. Article then discussed his control of the ANC and it was becoming likely that he will either ne President of SA or will be the power behind the throne so to speak.

I was sceptical given the press' love of a headline, but reading the replies of our Saffas bros. Here I wonder how much truth was in the story scary stuff.

Malema is on the extreme of the ANC but make no mistake that he has a lot of support and garners it through the youth league. The hope is there that the less radical ANC core remains strong enough to repel such a lunatic.

He is a headline grabber and a complete loose cannon but very, very scary. Guys who live in SA can probably elaborate more. I just base it on reading the Sunday papers in SA online.

Now back to the question.

Yes politics screws with sports a lot but I think rugby isfar the worse off because of PdV total lack of people skills and management capabilities. The one game he has played perfectly though is the political one. He was given complete autonomy from the outset and has managed to retain that autonomy regardless of disaster upon disaster. He has known from the start that as a black coach he cannot be fired. The political storm that would create would be horrendous.

How does a guy like Malema play into this? The radical faction he leads will continue to put pressure on sporting bodies to advantage black people and lessen the influence of whiteys. And it happens from the grassroots all the way up.

That pressure is telling. SARU will be under enormous pressure to appoint another black coach after PdV.

You probably dont know that he have a contract based on performance. If he dont cut the % in the WC he will be fired like any national coach. Pretty sure if he had Henry's WC performance he will be long gone. Myself is sure Rassie will be our next coach with Coetzee.

Paarl, my saffa mates tell me that the SARU have to submit national team selections to the Government for approval.
Is that right?

When I was with my laaitie in Potch, met a parent from Border or Amathole what they call them nowadays. He told me the thriller about his kid (12 year old) being picked for their cricket team after the final trials. Those who made the team was on the one side and those who didnt on the other side and the pres of Border Cricket had to approve. So he told them straight their numbers were wrong. He plug the parents kid (who stand closest to him) out of the team and put a black in his place. Never looked or ask where the kids bat or bowl and the kid was actually Borders opening batsman. Wish you can try and explain this to your 12 year old son, luckily the kid made their hockey team to make up for the disappointment. In our IPT U13 tournament we have a A and B section. SWD were dis qualify after they were suppose to get promotion to the A section because they havent got a coloured person on their coaching staff. Eatern Gauteng were dis qualified because they only had 2 iso 4 black players in their team. Their coach tried to explain the missing kids havent arrived in time for their trip but it did not helped at all. Thats the way it goes with 12 year old kids try to play at provincial level.

The whole situation sounds ridiculous to me, some disruption was obviously going to happen after Apartheid ended (understating the case slightly, perhaps) but surely SA has many bigger and more complex problems to deal with than this?

Having heard enough stories from expat Saffas about robberies, kidnaps, shootings, rapes and the like surely crime, poverty and healthcare should be the government's almost exclusive priorities?
