Andrew Kellaway played No 15 for Gordon U/16s in the State Championships! He would have been one of the players subjected to the draft between Schools and SJRU so would be eligible for selection in NSWJRU team!

That's incorrect, AK (Andrew Kellaway) could NOT have been "subjected to the draft" as he didn't qualify to play for SJRU. It's fairly simple, he didn't play for a zone team at the regionals.

My reflections on today's SJRU A grade semis finals... Let me start by saying that my info on the Norths team was pretty crap, they looked at full strength to me.

Game 1 - Norths 20 v Hills 5: Possession is the key word here. Hills looked threatening every time they got the ball particularly through their back line, specifically the centres. The problem was that they didn't get too much ball at all. Norths forwards completely dominated the contest and strangled Hills into submission. A worry for Norths is that the score was not reflective of their territorial and possession dominance. Seems to me that they are lacking the ability to finish as clinically as last year. In terms of the key battles, Tepai vs Robbie was fairly even, both having some good runs and turning up in defence. Williams however completely won the battle vs Matson in the lineout. If I was to pick stand outs, the whole Norths pack, plus the two centres from Hills and their Number 8 was threatening.

Game 2 - Merrylands 19 v Hawkesbury 10: Wow, what a game this proved to be. Hawkesbury were dominant in every aspect in the first half leading 10 - 0 at half time. However they seemed to run out of gas in the second half and the Merrylands forwards took over. In terms of the five eighth battle it was a tale of two halves, largely driven by factors outside their control. One thing I did notice was that Jamo kicks far too often. Not sure if it is the Merrylands gameplan, but some of the kicking was pointless. Malaki was his usual aggressive self but my pick of the day was Merrylands prop (wearing 6). Outstanding performance from him.

Conclusions from today - This year's Sydney A grade competition is seriously close and anyone can win. Personally I think Norths have got just that little bit of extra class, but anyone of the 3 could easily win. Bwaddles has been smoking some seriously funny stuff... Roseville would lose by 100 points against any of the 4 A grade sides on show today.

Have to agree! This was the main disappointment in SJRU and country game last weekend. Kicking strategically has its merits - but only if done with precision. Country proved that running the ball has its advantages. Jamo has a lot of other skills including a sweet side step - he needs to show that more often. Kicking can also go belly up - as was seen in Jamo's chip kick in Trinity vs Alos yesterday.

Einstein raises his furry head once again - definition of insanity - doing things the same and expecting things to change - i.e pointless!!

Agree with some of your points Malcsy. Norths were the better team on the day. Hills were just not firing! Didn't think the big name players made a difference either. Thought the Hills centres passed the ball instead of attempting to break the line and the number 8 was average I guess cos he had come from a league game! I also heard one of the mums mentioning how difficult it must be for the coach when they have never had a full team at training on any one week. Oh well obviously Hills have a lot to work on for next season.

IMO I thought Hawkesbury were going to upset the show against Merrylands who were also very flat. The Hawkesbury team certainly impressed and were very focussed. Shame they couldn't maintain the momentum to the end. Again the big names didn't stand out. Jamo's placement/territorial kicks are the best I've seen from a 16 yr old - but noticed too that his defence was lacking. Can't be on top of his game every week! Fair go!

I'm certain the grand final will a good one! Merrylands vs Norths IMO

The last half of this season have seen Merrylands start every game a little slow. They have the fitness and desire to come over the top of any team, but they do make it hard for themselves. Also Jamo has been with his school for most of the second half of the season, so the combinations were different for this game than they have been for 2 months. They did well considering.

What a lot of elitist crap. can't play out side of school if your in the 1 or 2s. Well when did the school own them. Are they cattle? Some people ought to get a bit realastic these kids -and they are kids . Are not playing for the Wallabies or sheep stations. Let them play where they like. just my opinion, cheers nothing personal to the poster.

Considering that if a boy is playing 1st XV he is training a minimum everyday and on saturday playing a 70 min game of very high intensity (much higher than the 16A comp) I dont think it would be good for a 16 year olds health to add on to that another game on sunday

So maybe the boy or the adults need to give the boy some advice - choose one pathway if you can't commit 100% of your time and focus on one team at a time. It is annoying to see some boys faking injuries so that they don't have to play on Sunday. I agree with the berries 'elitest crap'! Absolutely sick of the bull***t that I've seen in Sydney junior rugby!

The boy has a commitment to his school and his team mates, what would they think of him if he injured himself playing for Hunters Hill against Newport or another team and missed an important GPS game?

Even if some on this forum don't like it boys who attend GPS, CAS and ISA schools believe that playing for their first XV is more important and prestigous to them than playing for a club on a sunday afternoon. I know most boys would play both if they could but I do not believe that this is best for them as a player. Where do you draw the line if a boy in a school first XV wanted to play in a colts side at 18.

As to Berries comments Hills Sports do not play on a saturday so these boys are able to play in their weekend league sides or colts rugby. What would be the situation if Hills did play in a Saturday schools competition - would they allow their players to engage in their clubs and other sports (as well)as well? I bet the leagueies would not be allowed to play rugby on saturday and league on sunday

So what about the team members in the club team? If the boy can't be committed to any team that he plays in be it rugby, soccer. Cricket - then don't join the team! Life is about choices mate sometimes the boy has to make a choice cos not everything is about them!

Kiwi playing in Oz-notice that being a kiwi you'd understand that in NZ boys up to leaving school, only ever play one game in the w/e-of union. In fact the school has complete right over that boy,and can stop him playing for a club-in the afternoon-if it happens his school game was on in the morning.I'm sure every parent would agree that it is not healthy for a 16/17 to be playing more than 1 game over a two day period.Often in Sydney a boy will 'sign up' for the club team before he finds he has made his school 1st/2nd XV and only then, once the club season has started that he has to make the decision.I see in the U16A Sydney club comp that there is a number of teams that has boys playing 1st/2nd and then not fully backing up for the Sunday game.

I can't speak for all of nz but in the Wellington region kids play rugby for a club until they reach high school (college). They then only play for school teams ONLY. I have never heard of any college boy playing in a colts team for a club while they are still at school. The pride to rep your school is the same as in Oz. No boy is indispensable but everyone that plays depends on each other. I would guess though that the reasons the boys play for school and Club/SJRU is so that they have opportunity for the two pathways - how fair is that? The recent selections of rep teams says it all. Oh well we all have to suck it up ay lol

Before you have a total explosion - can someone go through the SJRU U16 side, by player and advise if they have left school or not? I think you'll find that over 90% are still at school and so by Kiwi's thundering - can stand accused of having an oar in 2 rivers se.lection wise!

Rugby in NSW is organised differently to QLD and to ACT and to NZ - get over it. It's not going to change any time soon.

The sixteens championship draw is up on the ARU website. Sydney is in pool B, and play WA on 26th Sept,
then NSW country on the 27th, then QLD Red on Thursday 29th.
