Here we go again.

This has been discussed previously in this thread but for you newcomers here goes.

The Junior Gold program is the level below the Junior Gold Squad (old NTS) and is open to players who have shown some level of ability in either their school, club or rep team. The selection is based on thier application, referees comments and playing resume. It is open to boys aged 15 - 18

The next level up is the elite squad called previously NTS and Junior Gold Squad (JGS). It is made up of about 30 players in each of the major rugby cities (Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth). These players are identified by the ARU high performance unit and invited to participate. It is essentially for 16-18 year olds

Not quite ILMF - in 2010/11 the program was run in three segments 1. National Gold Squad (NGS) for highest level as you have stated. 2. Junior Gold Squad (JGS) which was State based and 3. Junior Gold Regional Talent Centres (JGRTC) whch were regional based plus Western Sydney (5 venues).

What seems to have occurred is that the JGRTC (now called Junior Gold Program - JGP) has been expanded to cover all of Sydney operating from three venues at Narabeen, Parramatta and SFS. No doubt the National Gold Squad has been retained but what remains to be seen is whether the State squad will be retained with the expansion of the now JGP.

Have reliable information that letters for NGS have been sent out offering players to be part of the NGS for 2011/12 - first introductory gym session / gathering next week - 31 October at Waratahs - SFS.

May provide some light on the current situation.

I'm hearing quite a few 16 year olds taken in to NGS. Can anyone confirm with name and numbers please.

Understand - via the grapevine - Matthew Matson, Corey Tulloch, Harry Jones, Cameron Orr and Harrison Williams. I guess all will be revealed next Monday and Wednesday when they meet. These guys also in the JGProgram list put out last week- However understand different letters sent to invitees to the NGS and the JG Program.

Not surprised. Well deserved. Good luck to them all.

Is it still the case that Joey's don't support NGS ? Not that I think the NGS is the "be all and end all" but I reckon there's more players at Joey's with potential who would benefit greatly from the program than any other club or school. I admire the "all for the school philosophy" but are there players not reaching there full potential by not being involved ?

Looks like there's about 12-13 Joeys boys named in the Sydney JGP list so if they're involved in that it you'd assume they'd also be up for NGS if selected.

JGS happens on weekends so Joeys boys can attend... NGS happens during the week so generally they are not allowed to go. From what i am told Brth Boyd is fairly anti the NGS.

Thanks BWF....any ideas why the good Brother is anti NGS?

Looks like there are only the two ARU development programs - JGP in Sydney metro and regional areas and then the NSW NGS

I think the College likes to keep things in house. I'd be surprised if you found many boys that were allowed to participate in extra-curricular rugby activities that clashed with College commitments.

Heard Tepai Moeroa may have missed our on NGS...anyone able to confirm this?

Yes CTPE, no Tepai. It appears the ARU are now asking for more commitment for the NGS boys. It appears, only players who can commit to the extensive training schedule are now involved. No players in HM or SG Ball are involved in NGS.

Wow that's drawing a line in the sand...I'm thinking well done ARU...any ideas DD who else didn't get in due to rugby league affiliation?

Joey Lussick' and Jeff Markus are not involved in NGS now (were both previously). Hard to know who else may of been considered but are also commited to league. I would think Nick Andrews for 1.

Has a list of NSW NGS players yet been published?

We seem unable to agree about anything but maybe you'll agree that its time that Union stood up to league in this aspect: my sons club and rep team were decimated by a quite deliberate policy of the mungoes to train at a time that conflicted with the union club games forcing 12 and 13 year olds to make a choice between the codes.

Not that I know of. From what I'm hearing there are 32 players involved in the group based at Moore Park, ranging in age from 15 to 17. All these players need to serve a probationary period of 4 weeks before being accepted in to the program. I wasn't suprised with any of the names I've heard that are involved. However IMO I reckon there are about 6 players ( besides Joeys boys) who are notable omissions. Apparently the ARU have provision to bring kids in and out of the program pressumably via the JGS.

Yes, finally some common ground IS. Since its inception (2003) the NGS/NTS has included boys that consider Rugby League as their preferred sport. I believe the NGS program is of such a high quality that players should not be allowed to be included that are “half committed”. Your experience with the “mungoes” is by all accounts a common one. I have actually heard adult League coaches tell children as young as 11 that “it would be in their best interest to stop playing Union” If I were a parent of a kid getting this sort of advise, I would be questioning the integrity of these people. Anyone who goes out of their way to make it hard for a kid to play any sport should not be involved in kids sport. I think there becomes a time for all kids who play both codes at the elite level to make a choice. It appears 16 is becoming the “line in the sand” for both codes now.
