I am heading up Friday for my first tournament at this comp. Traveling with the Mudchooks.

Anyone else going? I am sure there will be drinks, so let me know.

Dude,

Darwin 7s is awesome. My club took a couple of teams up last year, but left our run a little late to organise. We actually played the Mudchooks in the semi final of the Gecko Cup last year - the guys were not too shabby in the 7s game.

We spent alot of time at the Monsoon's Pub. It was awesome and has a great party atmosphere.

Good luck. Let us know how you go.

There are so many different levels in the competition which is good.

In the main draw, a surprise packet was a team called Darwin Olympic who knocked out the Aussie Thunderbolts in the semis or quarters. If what I heard up there was true, it is an invitational team made up of soccer players with some rugby backgrounds from 'Olympic' clubs around the country - they come together for about two weeks beforehand to work on everything.

I wouldn't be going passed the Borneo Eagles who were a great side to watch last year. If the Aussie Thunder can overcome Olympic in the pool stages, they might be alright.

The Mudchooks are an interesting team - last year, by their own admission at the pub after the finals (which they won), they purposely lost all their pool matches so they would end up in the lowest section of the draw. From there, they won their quarter final, beat us in the semi final and won a tight final to end up with, I think, $5K prize money.

The boys tell me they aim to be the best of the worst, winning the lowest cup.

This year, Pool G

Pool G
1 Groote Eylandt Mudchooks
2 Heineken Harlequins
3 Kununurra Smashed Crabs
4 South Darwin

They will be aiming for the Gecko (Shield) which this year has 2.5K prize money.

It is my first real rugby "tour" in some time, really looking forward to going.

Then definitely hit up Monsoon's for the nightlife and arvo beers over the weekend, or the Cavanagh, which by all accounts provides free accommodation to good looking female backpackers to hang out at the pool in their bikinis during this time of year.

Don't count on it mate. Last year, the couple of days before the tournament were alright, then Saturday came and the morning was relatively mild, the rain came around 11am we played in the mud, it got hot and was humid as hell. Plenty of water and fluid on board today in my opinion.

Good luck - let us know how you go.

Aussie Thunderbolts and Brumbies both knocked out in the quarter finals.

Semi Finals: Daveta (from Fiji) vs Darwin Olympic (beat the Aussie team in pool match and knocked them out last year); Vietanici (local NT team) vs SRC Borneo Eagles (2x defending champs, who beat Sunnybank)

The boys took out the final 17-7. Two and a half grand that will not leave the bar.

I haven't been on the forum for a while Timms. Shame because I was there and would of shouted you a beer. I only went on the Sunday but thought the atmosphere was way down on previous years. Good to see the chooka going strong.

Palmerston Crocs won the tight five competition which all players must exceed 100kg.
