Televised games will force more and more importing on the schools and that's not really fair on the kids.

I think people would be just as happy (and interested) to watch the rep schoolboy games on Tele. Lets start with Aussie Schools and maybe the playoff's between the states, the inter competition games as well could be useful (ie GPS vs CAS)...

Fox Sports showed some of the Aussie Schools games last year during the middle of the day...from recollection it wasn't live and was a package of games highlights after the event. They didn't promote it and most people wouldn't have known that it was on unless they were told by someone linked to a player.

It would be great to see a televised Australia wide schoolboy competition held in the same format as the Waratah Shield (NSW) to showcase the best 1st XV in Australia.

I guess that these schoolboy games would be televised once the proposed competition reaches its semi finals stage.

I would ceretainly go to more Super Rugby games knowing that there is a curtain raiser invloving a schoolboy semi final series to find the best 1st XV school rugby team in Australia

You never know the Franchises might finally see the stadiums filled on game night, with the right type of potential supporters, young families.

Unfortunately,The Super teams are required to have a vacant field 90 minutes before their kick off, to enable warm ups from each side etc.
There was a Schoolboys trial last year before a Tahs game, kickoff was 4pm or 4.30 to conform with this requirement.

Before the Reds/Brumbies game at Suncorp, Padua played St.Lawrences. Kicked off at around 5 or 5:30. Was a great game and a thrilling experience for the boys playing as the Reds successful season meant a rather big crowd for the curtain raiser. Was good to see the 1st XV as a curtain raiser

It should defently be considered if there is room for a whole AFL channel there should be room for school boy rugby some where on tv

some sydney GPS games used to be played on tv, and there was talk of this possibly coming back for last years competition, would be great to see come back

I'm a big fan of that idea. Some may say its a copy of RL Schoolboys Cup but our big difference is that it has the potential to actually be a national championship with teams from both Melbourne and Perth getting involved. Could be really interesting, help elevate both the standard and status of Rugby in many lesser schools (both in NSW and QLD, and in Vic and WA) and give a broader snapshot of the game at that level.

It could be feasible to play certain GPS, CAS games as curtain raisers at Super XV matches but i dont think a whole new comp is realistic

play proper comp on the weekends which is not based in antiquated school systems. Play GPS/CAS games midweek - hell there's only 5 of them - and they dont start until about November this year

considering how much stronger gps rugby continues to get i think we would all be surprised how many people would be interested. however, if the game were broadcast live like the shute shield ones all the people who would be interested would be out wtaching other gps games anyway. showing a delayed version would work better. then again highlight videos on youtube are also quite good.

Wilde Klawer schoolboy rugby is now in its third year and is played over a few days between SA top school sides.

Next week monday (its a long school weekend in SA) and MNet (SS1 our rugby 24 hour channel) will show the matches live on national TV.

I would re-vamp the Waratah Shield in NSW. Start it during the trials to allow more weeks. And I would have a similar shield in each state where the winners move thru to a national knockout finals system. The winning team is crowned national champion and gets selected to play in the international tournament in Japan (all expenses paid perhaps)

In NSW, it would still only need to be played mid-week if they wanted to keep the traditional GPS/CAS fixtures on the weekend (which is probably more realistic)

But to entice the traditional rugby schools to want to play in such a comp, the condition would be that only the schools who compete can have players picked for state and Australian Schoolboy rep honours.

This carrot is very important to most traditional rugby schools. And it could really lift the profile of the Waratah Shield, and other such state-wide comps.

But it must be kept in mind the existing rugby window in GPS/CAS schools is only very small. I'd be interested to know how much rugby boys in NZ get to play during the year before the NZ school boys side is picked.
