As most know by now, I am playing in a Tens tournament in a little over a month. I haven't played any rugby in nearly a decade, but the group I am playing with is normally a sevens team.

Anyone out there tell me whether tens is more like 7s or 15s? I understand the difference, but I am talking more in game style, is there the forward play of 15s or is it more constant movement play like sevens?

Anything else I should know?

Hello MrTimms,

I played our regular pre-season 10's comp & I'd say while it's better than 7's its certainly closer to 7's still than 15's.

I found you could use the whole forward pack as one pod & keeping together you can make the hit & bring it to ground to set up the next play but with only one pod I found teams got fatigued during the end. Players would go to ground & the reinforcements would be one too many metres away, the ball would just get turned over. So if the forwards are fit I'd say you could bring it down to ground but on the safe side I think keeping on your feet & staying alive is probably best...then again if the backs get in there & do some of the cleaning out themselves that may help.

I'd say the main things I noticed other than that was that kicking for territory was less than 15's. The set piece was closer to 15's than 7's. I didn't recall any mauls being used.

I think it would depend a lot on the standard of the tournament and the players. I would say that Tens is probably closer to 15s than it is to Sevens, as a wild generalisation.

The particulars 10s tournament is http://www.phuketrugby10s.com/tens.htm

I have no idea what the standard will be like, I am hoping that there will be a bit more of the tougher stuff and I am old and slow, I will have more chance of keeping up with it if it is.

And Mauls may catch them napping, I know they aren't illegal...

I would agree that 10's is closer to 15's than 7's. There is a lot more structure and forward play compared to 7's.

Is the rest of your team the same Timms? I'd say youse are heading towards a 15's style of game. My team was full of lean, fast players which is probably why we played a more 7's style game. I remember also that a lot of our opponents during our 10's comps tend to be missing their tight 5 players which probably was the reason we played the way we did. I just say go into it with 15's style, impose it on the oppo!

No, thankfully they aren't all like me.

There is some good young rugby players, some who did well in qld premier before going to work in the mines. The bulk are younger, most play plenty of AFL, living in NT, there isn't much else to play week to week.

They also have more experience with sevens, so I expect it to be more like that, with a few older guys able to add some grunt if needed. and probably get caught out defensively from time to time.

It is not taken overly seriously though, so will be a good time no matter what the result.
