Re how (some) schools would react: perhaps not so well unfortunately p.Tah.

I can imagine some schools (at least at first) simply accepting they won't be picked for rep honour. I can also imagine them combining their voice and having a fair bit of bargaining power to allow them to be picked or else allow the AUS school boys to be weaker as a result.

But other traditional schools might just get on board, which starts to swings the balance of power back in the other direction.

I just think something needs to be tried to entice/enable the traditionally strong rugby schools to open up to other schools so that other schools can taste their love for forged traditions, rivalries and strong competition in rugby. I think this would inspire other schools to put more of a focus on rugby.

I understand that the aim of traditional rugby schools is not to benefit AUS rugby, and nor can people expect it to be so. Schools have their own aims, and so be it.

But extra mid-week games are not necessarily a disadvantage to the traditional rugby schools. Kids are able to play a couple of games a week and bounce right back. It would also give them more game time, which could only benefit them in their traditional comps on the weekend.

Schools rugby at its best

Tiaan Strauss, the former Springbok captain is the general manager of Megapro Marketing and they have just announced their broadcast coverage of South Africa's top rugby schools matches in a series referred to as Premier Interschools.
The matches will be broadcast live, starting in Paarl this Saturday. They have made this known in a press release on Friday.
Interschool rugby derbies have grown over several decades to become a major attraction in South Africa. Today, major Interschools games attract crowds of up to 20,000-plus spectators, with thousands of other supporters (including scholars, parents, Old Boys, and passionate rugby fans) following these matches on television and online.
Strauss, the Premier Interschools Director, said: "The objective of Premier Interschools is to bring the best of these traditional rugby rivalries right to your living room. The launch of Premier Interschools will provide significant exposure for the various schools nationally and internationally through television and new media.
"We are very excited about SuperSport's commitment to schoolboy rugby which will provide a platform for top future rugby talent to be showcased, while viewers can experience the excitement, emotion and passion generated by the these great Interschool games."
Strauss added: "The attractive and popular schoolboy rugby platform generates a sense of excitement and spirit on a par with rugby at any level. The televised Premier Interschools matches will enable the traditional running rugby from these top rugby schools to be shared with a much larger audience."
The first Premier Interschools match to be broadcast will be the annual derby between top ranked schools Paarl Gimnasium and Paul Roos Gymnasium on Saturday, 12 May, 2012 at 11.50 - live on SuperSport Five.
The following Premier Interschool matches will be broadcast on SuperSport in 2012:12 May: Paarl Gym vs Paul Roos26 May: Paarl Boys' High vs Grey College16 June: Paul Roos vs Paarl Boys' High21 July: Maritzburg College vs Affies10 August: Glenwood vs Grey College18 August: Monument vs Waterkloof
25 August: Bishops vs Rondebosch

From next year onwards, other traditional and high-profile Interschools matches will also be considered for Premier Interschools.
The launch of Premier Interschools will continue to grow the profile of schoolboy rugby in the country with traditional rugby schools being a key foundation contributing to the future talent pool of South African Rugby.

Don't the Saffie boys have a break at all in the season? (August 25th being the latest date shown in the above article). It's tough enough playing 20 or so rounds on a weekly basis for a club in a season without a drop in form, it's a lot harder for schoolboys if it's like a club season...but I take my hat off to those who play 2 or 3 games each weekend playing for school and various clubs and rep teams year after year...

Our school season runs from term 2 (april -june) to 3 (july-sep). 3 weeks school holiday when its Craven Week tournament. You wont find any kid in our top 20 playing for a club and our top schools have about 7 teams in the U18 age group. Lot of depth.

I remember a few years ago Shore were claiming they were the biggest rugby club in the world. 42 teams.

Think they have dropped away a bit since then, but they were going down to Hs and Is in 13s and Gs and Hs in all other years. 11ths and 12ths in Opens.

I think Maties (University of Stellenbosch) is the biggest club in the world

With fifty-three teams and more than 1300 registered rugby players that participate in league matches, the Matie Club is most probably one of the biggest competitive rugby clubs in the world
Thats only student teams from U19 and up. If you take into account their feeder schools (Paarl Gym, Paarl Boishaai, Paul Roos) have 20+ teams per school from U14 to U18 age group and their feeder prymary schools like KleinGim, Eikestad and Klein Boishaai who have around 14 teams per school from U7 to U13 age group per school you more or less gets to the sum why I am living in the biggest rugby talent pool in the world.

Anyway some interesting stuff. So opens is our version of U19s at school level.

@JoeMac how big is that crowds?

@JoeMac how big is that crowds?

Crowds vary depending on the quality of the two schools. The biggest recorded was Joey's vs View @ View, in 1996. I believe with either 22,000 or 24,000 people (there is a photo in the dressing room there and I cant remember which is correct)... Most years it would be 5000-12 000. Last year would have been 10-12k I would say.

Just found this video on youtube of it:

Unfortunately it is filmed from the hill which means you cant see where most of the crowd are but if you skip to about 1:15 you catch a glance at the huge amount of people there...

SA matches in the top 20 rugby schools always draw 10,000 minimum. We do all winter sports (rugby, boys and rgirls hockey, netball) starting on the friday and all ended with the main rugby match on the saturday. Last week as example between Paul Roos(boys)/Bloemhof(girls) and Paarl Gym (they are 30 kms from each other) it started on the wednesday. All the players from both schools and supporters end up at the main game on saturday @ 12h00. Teams participating are hockey boys 6 x11, hockey girls 10x11, netball girls,26 x 7, rugby 20 x 15 = 632 players. Add their parents and supporters and you'll get the weekly support base at games.

I think that if they did decide to broadcast Schoolboy rugby, they would most likely focus on the GPS in both NSW and QLD.
However, I doubt they would want to broadcast most of the games, so I think that they would only broadcast the major games and games for the premierships. I see that Club games are broadcasted on various channels from time to time so I guess it would be quite good to see schoolboys on tv, however I think that It would defeat the purpose of the massive crowds for the First 15 Games and the whole vibe of GPS sport would be taken away because of it being on the air each weekend.
