I know I keep saying it but Higgers IMO would be a bigger loss to the Reds than Genia would have been or QC (Quade Cooper). He is about to hit his peak and has been developing more and more each year. I still remember when he was kicking around for Wests prem grade back in 2008 and he's come a long way in a fairly short time.

I've pretty much conceded thats the Rebels have got him in the bag though. They have the money and have probably offered him a substantial leadership role as well. They are also desperate for backrowers.

As of 10 o'clock this morning Rebels CEO Steve Boland said that they hadn't had any formal talks with him and hadn't made him an offer.

Maybe that is a smoke screen, but on the other hand it could be a storm in a tea cup.

Maybe it's a different Melbourne team!

What is a "formal" talk is the main question and does one have to get out if the casuals to actually sign.

Can't blame melbourne if they are talking to him, after the Genia saga a club would be crazy to announce anything unless a contract is signed and three independent lawyers had witnessed it.

If true. Which i think it is. Big loss for the Reds. But an even bigger gain for the Rebels. Higgers is one of my fav player at the moment, way ahead of Elsom, Dennis, Mowen IMO.

Now is the perfect time for the reds to announce that higgers is walking out on his championship dreams due to not being paid enough. Cue a full back page colour article in tomorrow's courier mail, with op-ed columns and the whole she-bang.

He will be re-signed by the weekend ;). This tactic works 100 percent of the time.

Unless you are the rebels, and you dont have a salary cap....

The Rebels isn't even the bad part, keep thinking of the other 10 teams in the comp.

It's like the NRL only applying a salary cap to the Broncos, Manly, Penrith and the Sharks. Sound fair?

Then, they faff about so long that no one even knows how much the salary cap is, with the talks stalled and there is no "agreement" on how much the cap actually is. Try recruiting in that environment.

with a salary cap, and you win the comp, you can't keep them all

Let's just think through the potentially damaging logic path here: you win the comp, your players real and money value goes up, but some of the best must be shed to permit some others of the best to be retained. So the best proven teams are pillaged, so that unproven teams can possibly, maybe, some day, get stronger. Maybe.

Do we think this system will result in the consolidation of sustained excellence to build our Collingwoods or Geelongs, or rather the creation of an averaging merry-go-round that never permits more than, at maximum, one year's critical mass for any top team?

Then there is the other issue of equitable recoupment for player investment by a franchise; in this scheme, there is no compensation ever paid for that so that 'new' franchises upon the pillage are effectively being subsidized by the better performing old ones, and the more pillaging there is, the greater that inequity builds to.
