I'll try my best to explain the SA situation and I'll start at the bottom of the structure. Rugby in SA starts at schoolboy level and the rugby schools is spread out through the whole country. Thats basically where your rugby culture starts and the raw talent coming from. Looking at the current SA Top 20 rugby schools to get the idea where the top talent is at the moment and I'll put the CC province and Franchise next to it as is.
FNB Top 20 - 15 May 2012:
1. Paarl Gim (WP) Stormers
2. Affies (Blue Bulls) Bulls
3. Grey College of Bloemfontein (Cheetahs) Cheetahs
4. Paarl Boys' High (WP) Stormers
5. Paul Roos (WP) Stormers
6. Dale (EP) Kings
7. Outeniqua (SWD) Kings
8. Waterkloof (Blue Bulls) Bulls
9. Westville (Sharks) Sharks
10. KES (Golden Lions) Lions
11. Centurion (Blue Bulls) Bulls
12. Noord-Kaap (Griquas) Cheetahs
13. Grey High of Port Elizabeth (EP) Kings
14. Framesby (EP) Kings
15. Glenwood (Sharks) Sharks
16. Boland Landbou (WP) Stormers
17. Michaelhouse (Sharks) Sharks
18. Wynberg (WP) Stormers
19. Kearsney (Sharks) Sharks
20. Queen's (Border) Kings
Teams just below this group are
Bethlehem Voortrekker (Griffons) Cheetahs,
Diamantveld (Griquas) Cheetahjs
Die Brandwag (EP) Kings
Dr EG Jansen (Valke) Lions
Drostdy (Boland) Stormers,
Garsfontein (Griquas) Cheetahs
Hilton (Sharks) Sharks
HTS Middelburg (Pumas) Lions
Hugenote of Wellington (Boland) Stormers
Kemptonpark (Golden Lions) Lions,
Maritzburg College (Sharks) Sharks
Marlow (EP) Kings
Menlopark (Golden Lions) Lions
Monument (Golden Lions) Lions
Nelspruit (Pumas) Lions
Oakdale (SWD) Kings
SACS (WP) Stormers
Transvalia (Valke) Lions
Tygerberg (WP) Stormers

SA biggest problem is not to find the raw talent, its everywhere and wide spread over the 14 CC provinces.

The next level is the Varsity Cup. The Stormers have to big teams in there (UCT and Maties), Brutes have the current champs Tukkies, Lions UJ and Wits, Cheetahs have Kovsies and the Sharks no team.

Rugby in SA however is professional and have a huge amount of politics into it and thats where the problem is with the Kings. They sure have enoug schools to bring talent through but they dont had the SupeRugby budget to try and hold on to that young talent.

and that more or less is the SA situation, no way the Cheetahs and Lions will form the Cats, the two franchises wont recieve two S15 players budgets. Its a bit like the Lions franchise in itself, they are suppose to have the best depth out of their three CC provinces (Pumas, Leopards& Golden Lions) All three played in the CC premier league before they cut the league from 8 to 6 teams. The Cheetahs franchise have Griquas (just played in the Voda final) and Cheetahs. Once they get that SupeRugby franchise the Cheetahs obvious will push their CC province players and leave Griqua lot out in the cold, like the Lions dont use the Pumas and Leopards within the Lions franchise. Pumas played in the Voda semis a week ago and have a stong team while the Leopards have one of the strongest clubs and Academies in SA with the Pukke. John Mitchell and Naka never really tapped into this great rugby fountains just as the Kings will only use EP players and will not use Border nor SWD talent. The Kings is forced on us by the ANC and givernment because PE have the biggest black population within SA and Saru used the Kings to get Heyneke Meyer as the Bok coach in return.

SA rugby is provincial driven not central driven like NZ and thats why the CC have a lot of meaning to us. No way the top Lion players will just set off to PE and get going with the Kings, the big three (WP, Bulls, Sharks) will get them on contract and the gap will just widen betwwen the big three and the rest.

From, a player perspective, they only use the Griquas, Boland, SWD provinces to get them to the big three franchises.

Thats what money brought to rugby added with politics and you get to the sum of it.

Paarl that depends on how much money the Kings have to throw around.

Saru used the Kings to get Heyneke Meyer as the Bok coach in return.

Serious? Was that the deal done with ANC to have a white coach?

The Kings will go for value for money. I'll bet you the likes of Jantjies will play for WP next year.

Cant say its the deal but as you know the way to work with politicions is give and take. The Kings S15 idea came from way back and as you know the Snor appointment last time as Springbok coach.

Jake White tried him at flyhalf when he played for the Cheetahs after they won the CC.

Ah, I see. Was it on an end of year tour? Bosman has never struck me as being all that good, he has occasional flashes, but I don't see much else. How did he go at flyhalf?

BOSMAN, FROM NOWHERE TO SPRINGBOK by Eddie Grieb & Stuart Farmer
Meyer Bosman, the Free State Cheetahs flyhalf and centre, had a meteoric rise in South African rugby. He started the 2005 season in the Free State under-21 side at flyhalf. He made his first of eight appearances for Free State on 5 August against the Griffons and made seven more appearances, starting only once against the Sharks on 8 October. In the Currie Cup final on 22 October he went on as a replacement and scored the winning try for Free State, their first Currie Cup title since 1976. On 19 November he made his Springbok debut against Wales at the Millennium Stadium just 106 davs after his first-class debut, and at 20 years and 213 days was the fourth youngest Springbok since the Second World War.

Meyer Bosman was seen as a great prospect but after that Aussie arsing at Suncorp he became surplus.

I remember that game well. Seems he was the scapegoat and that was the end of his career. Never really recovered I reckon. Superbly gifted player. Good guy for the Tjorks on the bench though.

Grey College - Paarl how many Currie Cup and Super Rugby players you reckon they have produced?

Ridiculous.

I am not sure about SupeRugby but I know they produced the most Boks since 1992, Paarl Gim in second.

and on the real point, the Lions look to be the biggest loser here... it's not as if they've lit up super rugby over the years, but pretty well no team except the Crusaders have routinely. it's a shame that Captain Awesome Beard and his boys have had such a poor run with injury after a great Currie Cup season last year

True. The players will suffer because of years and years of incompetence, corruption and bad administration.

Josh will get a gig next year, as will all the good players in the Lions team. Guys like Doppies will probably head off overseas.

True, Doppies has already signed in Italy - Treviso I think?

The Force would do well to think outside the box and wave a few $ and a marquee spot under Elton Jantjies nose. Unless the Kings have their eye on him - Paarl, Blue?

Otherwise you would think he would only be a bench option at any of the other SA teams.
