Running

To rival the fancy cyclist club around here, I thought it would be good that the superior athletes should have a place to discuss all things to do with running.

So what type of running do you do? Sprinting, road running (what distance?), cross country. What type of training do you do?

I dabble in a bit of everything, and I am probably above average in most running events. I find sprinting really fun, but there is nothing more satisfying than smashing out a 6km run and flying past cars stuck in traffic along Musgrave Rd. Any Brissie posters doing the Brisbane Marathon or Bridge to Brisbane in August?

I only do Fartleks. Just because of the name. :)

I'm doing B2B next month but at 113 Kgs it will be tough. I'm running with my oldest Girl.

I'm going down to Redcliffe next sunday to do the Jetty 2 Jetty 5 k run sounds like fun and seems pretty flat.

I love running from my place through Surfers then along the beach towards the Spit there is plenty of water and the views are magnificent. :bootyshake

Problem with that coastie stuff is you get so used to the flats and really struggle with any hills. I almost always run hills, but not massive distances (3-4kms). Ran the other day with a friend who is much better than me on flat, but only trains on flats (he has done the half in pretty good time). He came on my hill run and half way up (a very big) hill stopped and said 'I'm dying'.

Was pretty funny. I would have laughed when I got to the top if I could breathe properly.

Well I haven't done much running or riding of late but Moses has inspired me so today I trotted around for a few Klms and felt okay but not great. But Since my last run I've ditched the iPhone and gone all Droid. I used to use Runmeter to track things and I loved it. All your data was on the phone and it had built in playlist support and would read friends tweets to you while you ran. Unfortunately they don't make it for Android. I've just ran with Runkeeper and I don't like it much. It didn't mute the music when it updated me and I couldn't find anywhere to select playlists in the app.
Any suggestions from the crowd? Is the Pro version any better? What about Runstar? Edmondo? Anything?

Runkeeper is pretty good - you can tell it to mute your music when it makes an announcement, is in the settings.
I ran the native droid music app, then ran runkeeper at the same time. Not sure how good the runkeeper music app is.
Not sure about reading tweets out though, would piss me off..

I don't care about the Tweets But the music not fading out and the extremely slow update voice was annoying.

Run keeper is more accurate in recording distances etc.
Endomondo has a bigger choice of activities and features. They also really push their online community and run regular competitions based on how much fitness work you do.

The best advice I can give is try a few out and when you have settled on one pay the few dollars for the full version.

I have both Endomondo and Runkeeper, picked up Runkeeper when they were having a promotion a while back, and endomondo in the big google play promo with apps for 10c. I have tried endomondo but only use runkeeper.

I haven't noticed the issues with music, but I only just started using my phone for music, I used to put the phone in my pocket with all updates off, just tracking and use an ipod for music.

What I love about runkeeper is the webpage where you logon and can see the run/ride with the path mapped and a graph for elevation and pace, it makes a big difference.

I have also tried mapmyride it was OK, but didn't really impress me.

My only real problem with Endomondo is that it doesn't map your path continuously or use the map to keep it to the road/track. It takes points and just draws a straight line. and so if you are riding down hill quite fast it misses a lot of distance.

What I would love both of them to be able to do is to just track your heart rate without needing the GPS on. So that you can manually enter data from a treadmill/stationary bike/rowing machine and then match it to you heart reading. The only app I have found that does that is Sports Tracker.
I picked up the Polar Wear-Link Bluetooth. It works really well.

I really like the runkeeper website - even now that I've got a quality garmin watch I'm still uploading the data to runkeeper as it allows you to mouse over the pace / heart rate / elevation charts and shows where that was on the map. Also the zooming on the pace / hr / elev charts is nice on longer runs.

Plus there's a good community on runkeeper, there are plenty of my mates in my street team and I can see how everyone is improving. One thing I'd like to be able to do is rename each run, eg where it says '[22] Running 21.21km' if I could change that to '[22] Hunter Half 21.21km' that'd be awesome. This is something you can do on Endomondo.

Nice work Moses. I went the other extreme. Quantity over distance. After my pants got a bit tight and I had to move out a notch on the belt at Thanksgiving last year, I decided to try run every day. I am about 8 month into it now. Have missed a few days here and there when it has been pissing raining, or when I got food poisoning. But overall, I have been good, and am aiming for a year now. My Forerunner total stat log from November 26th 2011 - July 22 2012. Also, June's calendar as example (July is not as complete, after I had a toothache, root canal, and crown disrupt my running schedule).

Sprinting is my gig so to speak.

Speed endurance is the only kind of stamina I train for - Fartlek in the offseason for that. I have had some debate with my Rugby trainer about it as he prefers me to do sprinting dominated activites (which I prefer but I keep the Fartleking cause I think it helps a bit with endurance - being a backrower).

I do a lot of SAQ (Speed, Agility, Quickness) type running activities. Hollow sprints, using weight vests &/or chutes on & off to create an overspeed effect. Some sessions are to train for speed only, so large rest times, other times the work:rest ratio is Rugby specific. Sometimes I use beach running bare foot, I find it really helps strengthen my legs. Getting a bit away from running but plyometrics to help with explosiveness off the mark is pretty fun too, I like to stand knee to thigh deep at the beach & use the waves coming in to tuck jump over.

I put up a thread some times ago about Sprinting (link below). I'd be happy to have it merged into the running thread.

I have been using Endomondo myself for a year for cycling whilst using DroidRun but found lately that the DroidRun didn't allow for my regular pauses and walking before restarting running, it mapped the whole of the route I covered with both running and walking instead of just running.

Just uploaded the pro version of Endomondo and it's a good one for running now, it has got a Tabata Timer component, has anyone ever done the full Tabata (i.e. do all 8 flat out sprints with only 10 sec break in between...I'm now up to six before I need a break before finishing it off!) Its a very time effective exercise and has massive benefits compared to just running at steady pace for say 20 mins or so...

I've done plenty of tabatas but not with solely running. Not sure if that is what tabata was developed for?

Longest tabata I have done involved 8 different exercises and 12 rounds. Yep 48 minutes. Becomes more mental than physical!
