being 95 kilos is something you cant ignore in rowing though. the heaviest from the shore 8 this year was 89 kilos with the lightest being 74. i dont think scores of around 6:00 for a couple of blokes on an erg are going to help if more than half your crew is over 90 kilos. remembering that its not all about how hard you pull.

As an old boy of Shore and rowing enthusiast I agree, and may I draw your attention to the remarkable SGS 1st VIII where, in a crew where the bowman battled to break the big 70kg mark, technique and sheer determination made up for sloppy erg times.

this is true, and in the case of the rise of said bowman it is clear that determination can be a defining feature, as it is said he progressed through the ranks from the depths of the year nine quads to the height of the 8 solely on on the wings of this drive for technique and determination.

if Pollit and others (such as the rumoured Scots boy who shares his size) can similarly focus themselves then, although the fact remains that ergs don't float, they can try their hardest to make them, and it's that that will make the difference in a quest for the rennie

i think newington should do good this year. even without their supposed great coxswain, the humble ed pollit will lead the lightweight crew to a fantastic result in their 150th year.

From what I hear, Penington was desperate for a win but had personality issues with the crew. The tail was wagging the dog so to speak. No idea what Robertson was on about, but Penington has gone from 1st V111 coach and Director of Rowing to only Director and is being replaced by a focused coach. That spells demotion in any sport. Rumour is his days are numbered anyway. As I said before you have to feel sorry for the 2013 lads with this pressure on them. Don't know who Pollitt is but from the records he was 2nd Viii last season.

he hasnt exactly been demoted, he has other issues to focus on at the school. a specialist coach for each aspect was wanted and pennington apparently didnt have time. so they bring in new coaches

It is clear his objective in the role was, like all HOR coaches, to win the big one. We know the legendary Michael Morgan had issues with Penington and his coaching approach in 2010 and 2011 and he left the shed, then he worked with Stevan Evans in 2012 who apparently is now just an adviser and Penington is removed from coaching the VIII all together for 2013. Specialist coaches are certainly a move in the right direction (Shore, TSC, Kings) and they have a heap of them at NC, but they need to build a relationship with the lads in order to gain their trust and respect. This could be hard for New in such a short period of time especially when people like Rabjohns and Richards and Evans have very different styles and demands. No doubt they have the boys to do it, but at what point do you say to the Director, this is your last roll of the dice, you are not performing. Rowing is more about the culture of a shed through the grades, not only the VIII. Is SP the man to lead a shed ???? It would seem NOT. Just look at what Willams and Huxley have been able to build into the Scots program, or the culture Jennings has developed and nurtured at Shore! Anyway i think it will be a close one with Scots, Shore, Joeys and New looking to fight it out. But most probably the first 3.

Yes I heard of that too. I also heard they gave that coxswain fro the 2nd 8 2010 a scholarship to help out. but he declined it.... Interesting

It seems to me that GPS Colunist and GPS Rower may know each other better than the rest of us and possibly are or were both comrads at school. And as for Robertson, he will learn to write with constructive respect rather than rude rant. Clean it up boys, get constructive rather than taking the piss out of each other. We are 8 schools, not 1.

that cant be true, i dont think they would risk the experience of this years juniors based merely on attitude problems.

this is ridiculous, Hardy is in better shape than ever after training for his role as the new Batman villain - they'd want to keep him in the shed for shore.

that is definitely not true. they arent going to drop boys from their program after theyve already spent a kabillion sessions in the eight already.

Grammar is forecasting one of the biggest intakes in both the junior and senior sheds in the past decade. It seems that it's status as a feeder shed for the ivy league is drawing more and more grammar boys to the shed, with many seen doing winter training out of Mosman Rowing Club. With mike "James Cameron" smith at the helm (undoubtedly the best coach in the GPS) there is no doubt that the boys in black will be in contention if not for the rennie itself but for a minor podium position.

There is no doubt that the grammar shed has found some form under mike smith and this will surely continue as Tim Mclaren has agreed to fill the assistant coach position when he returns from the states later this year, and will coach the viii as well as returning to his position of head coach at UTS.

With the new depth coming in and undoubtedly two of the best coaches grammar should comfortably hold onto the minor places. (newington and shore to battle it out for first)

i dont see how the grammar coaches are the best? they are nowhere near as successful as some coaches from the shore school.

You have to look at what they have to work with. Shore can train as much as they want and have big fit boys to work with. While grammar is capped at 2 water sessions a week. You only had to look at the difference in size between newington and grammar as they shared the podium last year, they looked like they came from
Different divisions. But as far as first viii coaches go, it's obvious grammars get the most out of the crew.

Also Tim mclaren was head coach of the US men's team.

Shore has a great chance with wins in 1st, 2nd and 1st J VIII's last year, while Scots may fall off the rail with their entire 1st VIII crew leaving. Newington may have some potential comin second in 1jVII's for the last two years. Kings seem to drop off in the senior years while grammar have had a surge, not sure if they can keep it coming. Riverview dont seem too strong, their crew seems a bit small. St Joesephs could be a powerhouse but that depends on coaching. Theyve lost their head coach in Brian Richardson to Newington, who will have more freedom to work his magic. Newington and Shore seem to be the two to watch. Keep an eye out for the dark horses High as well, they seem to be improving rapidly under coach Michael Morgan, and have been spotted numerous times in winter sculling sessions.
