this Tim Fleming character is certain avid 'watchdog' so to speak of the GPS rowing season. I have heard some prospects of Scots continuing their fine form in the 4s and 1st 8 and make have a chance in taking out these premierships if of course they continue their recent momentum.

The recent addition of the Armidale school showed that a small rowing school can use its 'rugby' size and create a dominant lower division 4. Hopefully as the drought has somewhat subsided there, that they will able to crew an 8 in future years and increase the amount of Competition in the GPS competition.

I have heard the large oarsman, RUben Mackellar who was in the Newington 4th IV last years has seen some solid improvements. His erg times are low i have heard, and has increased a solid amount of size. He's been spotted on the water several times rowing for Sydney Rowing Club and has been competing in some events. He could be the Dark Horse for Newington College next year!!!

i dont see how the grammar coaches are the best? they are nowhere near as successful as some coaches from the shore school.

Michael "Boo Radley" Smith delivers the goods even working with the imposed training limits, as well as convening the GPS at the same time, no mean feat, as opposed to Shore where coaches like Jennings and Gary can work with almost unlimited sessions, to the point last year where a certain member of the shed was reported as saying "I cant remember what my mum's face looks like any more" after spending the entire holidays in rowing lockdown. This coaching skill translating to results on the water will probably also make High's results interesting now they have Morgs at the helm.

The Newington College shed was put into quite a scare after HOTR when rumours started of the 2ndVIII 7-seat leaving the shed after possibly being dropped from the bow seat of the M.D.Morgan. Thankfully he was convinced to come back as he has much needed athleticism and arrogance (confirmed by sources) that the Newington 1stVIII could definitely benefit from. Running the 100 in less than 11 seconds, along with Pollitt being the reigning U16 200m champion of GPS, the powerful leg drive of Newington College's proposed 5- and 6-seat (respectively) could be the thing to stick it to Shore. I'd say by about half a boat-length.

Records show Mackellor being in 3rd IV... Can someone please confirm???

Rumour has it that the 7 seat rowed seriously short and didn't sit back at the finish enough, causing timing issues. Not sure who Mackellor is but recent programs suggest he is not a threat to the VIII unless he has done a huge amount of work in the off season. I have also had it confirmed that 3 new rowers from St. Augs and 2 from Kinross will be starting at Joeys for 2013 season. This came out of the boarding house last week end from a master not a student. Presumably music scholarships I guess ????? I also heard on the grape vine 3 or 4 Riverview boys have pulled ergs around the 6.15 - 6.20 mark. Interesting season it will be.

I wouldn't worry st Augs rows out of mosman and not with much skill. Can't row to save their lives. And kinross has no water to row on and fewer quality rowers to row on it, they may win the U17 coxed quad at nations but the GPS will eat them up.

You would have to put your money on shore at this point as they never produce a bad crew and no doubt have the depth. But if they are going to be challenged by anyone it will be Scots and New. Scots because they had a cracking 1st 4 last year and solid 1st 8, New because Penington has been removed and the new coaching team will be wanting to prove their employers right in their choice. Some depth issues in their shed though and they will need every available decent rower to dig in. I do however think coxing depth for both Scots and New could be their undoing at that level as I believe either Tinworth or Morrison from shore 1sts and 2nds 2012 may still be around, and you can't buy that kind of leadership or experience. This could quite possibly be the difference on the day.

Thanks I.S., it took me a while to find it !!
I'm going with Kings and Shore, Shore because its Shore and Kings because, traditionally the yr10 VIII has gone on to win the Major 2 years later and guess who won by........... daylight in 2011.
I'll have to double check but I think in the last 10 years, only twice this has not happened, and 2012 was one.....

scots to win with tim robertson joining the crew. His valuable knowledge of everyone's erg score and power-boosting red hair will surely red-rocket the boys from the college with the view to victory. my pick to feature on the national team to make the otherwise useless line-up from the previous year red-hot

that wouldn't surprise me either, I had my OTHER money on Scots this year, would have been a nice bit of symmetry as they last won in '79 straight after Grammar in '78 and of course Grammar won in 2011 and it would have been good to see Scots get their in 2012!!

How many boys back from the High crew....they were the most physically uniform and fit looking High crew I've seen for many years.....?

read the post again...I was hoping for a Scots victory this year (2012). I will be happy for them to win in '13 though, as Grammar has been the only school to beat the tight grip that Shore, Kings and New have had for the last 35 odd years.

I really can't see kings being a threat. It's the same every year, yes they are big fit boys but they just can't row a solid middle thousand. And their second viii consistently beats their first viii in the preseason which results in the classic kings 'musical chairs' in an attempt to rectify the situation.

Shore is going to win. It won't be pretty and several of boys will be scarred from the experience and will have massive midlife crises as a result of their lost childhood. But they have a solid, almost professional program which delivers results. Jennings has established a nice niche where he can employ his 'shotgun' coaching style (many of the other schools would be reluctant to give him such free reign, grammar for instance is limited to 2 water sessions in the school week). But to his credit he gets the results. It's going to take something pretty special to top them and right now I can't really see it.

Yes you can claim newington is cleaning house and getting new coaches blah blah... I still think they are a few years and a few kgs away from a rennie. The best thing they could do is lock their first viii out of the gym

out of interest, does anybody know the simple training structure to shore's rowing program?

Newington senior squad hasn't got a man over 90kg. Yes Shore is looking good although do you really think that these north shore boys will be able to move away in the third 500 when its neck-and-neck? Times have changed, Shore isn't as tough as they used to be.
