Bru - in every rant there's a few words of sense. Do you actually go along with the thrust of it? If so, no worries, we disagree.

Is this where you see yourself?

The axes are set up with a pejorative implied, but I think I would be halfway between left and centre, on the middle axis. The blogger takes a fairly extreme view, along the lines of anarchism. Which is fine - who knows, in some other society that dot might represent the centre of politics. What bothers about people on that red dot is they generally assume they know what's best for people, when their very position indicates how far away they are.

I've done the political compass thingy before, I'm quite centrist, a little "lefty downer" as my friend teased me.

Here's mine.

A little bit more to the right and a lot more libertarian that I would have expected. If you look at their analysis of world leaders like Obama, Cameron, Gillard, Milliband, Romney, etc, you see that the current centre of democratic politics is about 8 squares to the right and 5 squares up. No wonder I feel alienated from mainstream politics.

I have a problem with the language in that.

I've yet to meet a self-described libertarian who wasn't, deep down, a high right wing authoritarian follower and/or socio-economic Darwinist.

overthehill, I've been trying to glean some meaning from your post for the best part of the day. I admit that, in the main, it continues to defeat me.

In particular, I would have thought that "socio-economic Darwinism" is an entirely congruent and reasonable consequence of being a libertarian. Leave everyone to themselves, and the fit will swim and the rest will sink, right? These people would occupy the bottom right hand corner of the map.

You, in contrast, I think are claiming the label "libertarian" for what is more often associated with "anarchism," or the bottom left hand of the map.

Am I getting this right?

If so, could you possibly be less cryptic in all your posts and state once and for all, "I am an anarchist." You could also choose to sing that, if you like.

Anarchists don't want anyone to sink. "Libertarians" seem not to care whether they do, they just want to hoard property with no social responsibility.

Billie Bragg is a socialist (top left of chart).

overthehill is an anarchist (bottom left of chart).

Both positions are as unrealistic as each other, in my opinion, but at least Billy has a sense of humour about it.

Libertarians tend to have a "shoot first and let god sort them out policy" (bottom right).

The top right of the chart is ......... well, it's where we are now. Call it "republicanism."

The problem with a very libertarian view is that the premise of letting the weak fend for themselves works until the weak get desperate and start causing problems for the strong.

Crime and every other social problem increases and it costs a lot of money to deal with in terms of law and order and otherwise.

It also detracts from the same society that the strong/successful people are looking to enjoy.

The pure libertarian view collides with our social policies/moral code at the level where we don't just let the weak die in a corner or shoot them on sight if they cause any problems such that allowing too many people to be weak hurts us all.

"Glibertarians" is a better name for 'em - they haven't thought through their political philosophy at all, apart from "I've got mine!"

Scarfman, our views according to the imperfect little test above, are quite similar.

Meanwhile, here's more Gittins.

Oh and I'm off to see Billy Bragg for probably the tenth time tomorrow night in Melbourne.

He might not have the answers (and he isn't saying he does) but he's devoted his life to justice, fairness and equity.

he wasn't always (I think):
I used to want to plant bombs at the last night of the proms
But now you'll find me with the baby, in the bathroom,
With that big shell, listening for the sound of the sea

Scarfman you'd be horrified to know I finished up to the left of you in that political compass - true a little below but to the LEFT!
