Obama by not much, hopefully shows his true colours through his second term.

It makes me so mad that most people that I know (so mainly young university students) are apparently such 'experts' on US politics, but wouldn't be able to name their local state/federal member, their local mayor, or even the state premier, probably. They think they're so worldly for knowing that Romney is a crazy person, but they have no idea about the things that actually affect us, in the places we live.

They are waiting for all the votes to be tabulated so they can claim that Obama got the electoral college but not the popular vote and therefore doesn't have a mandate. Then they can use this to justify militant obstuctionism by the Republican party in the Congress and Senate. Fun times ahead.

Well, Obama was leading the popular vote at last count. So hopefully that line will soon be taken from them.

That awkward moment when Mitt Romney realises that there is something that you can't buy or inherit

Or dig up a under mountain that makes you a prophet. Cue South Park's "Mormons actually believe this" sign.

Good result for the rest of the world I reckon. Obama is the more sensible candidate and genuinely wants to improve life for the middle class there.

I think they are still in for 4 more years of republicans rejecting everything left right and centre for crazy reasons though.

Listening to NPR on my internet radio this AM there seems to be no doubt about this being their aim.
Its times like these, for all of its failings, that make you glad to have the australian system.

Does anyone else think that Obama's unexpectedly comprehensive victory was in part a reaction of voters to the Republicans spoiler attitude and complete unwillingness to engage in the political process in good faith.

Unfortunatley I think the only thing that could fundamentally change the Republicans attitude would be for the Dem's to win another term after this one.

I don't think it was that unexpected.

Recently, the conservative media have spent a lot of time claiming that the polls were wrong and they were polling too many young people/African-American people/Hispanic people and that nowhere near as many would turn out to vote.

What actually happened was the vote reflected the polls and was very similar to the turnout in 2008.

Romney's biggest problem was that he played himself up as an arch-conservative to win the Replublican nomination and then tried to tone it down to be more of a moderate in the presidential campaign.

As long as the Democrats can maintain the voting turnout amongst young people, African Americans and Hispanic people then it will be very hard for the Republicans to win the White House.
