I dont know what Mckenzies issue is! he created the monster that became Quade Cooper... Perhaps if he created a more respectful pro player QC (Quade Cooper) may still be in Australian rugby...

There seems to be quite a bit of conflict between the ARU and QRU at the moment which isn't helping things. The QRU already got screwed by the ARU on Higginbotham, who had agreed to terms with the QRU but had to await for an offer subsequent to coming to terms with the state union. The offer was then a lot less than expected which meant the larger offer from the Rebels came into play.

It's a really screwed system. I'm pretty sure the ARU could give Quade a $100K contract if they got rid of Nucifora. If only we'd been able to keep Pat Howard...

Who is currently overseeing recurrent injuries to multiple key players in the Australian cricket team...

The number of high profile cricketers who have broken down in what is a non-contact sport is probably worse than the ARU injury problems on a relative scale.

Really?! FFS mate, if this is the best you've got to add maybe don't bother. I get you don't like Quade, actually, you really don't like Quade and are stoked to see him go but really?! Now it's Link's fault?

^^^ mudskipper, QC (Quade Cooper) came through the same ARU HPU pathway programmes for talented athletes such as the State and Aust Schoolboys, NTS (as it was then - forerunner to the NGS), academies etc.

Many other talented and precociously skilled athletes also trod those same paths and received the same Life Skills lessons, mentoring, and management along the way. QC (Quade Cooper) is special, because none of the others on that same pathway (with notable exceptions of the other musketeers) have deemed it appropriate to behave in this manner.

Link has only had any influence on QC (Quade Cooper) for the last couple of years.

You can't blame ARU influence for producing QC (Quade Cooper), and similarly you can not lay the blame for the recent poor decision making from QC (Quade Cooper) on Link.

We should perhaps credit Link for keeping a lid on what appears to be some genetic predisposition for mischief (the Self Destruct Gene so often present in the prodigiously talented and creative) for so long.

McCall, Carmichael & McKenzie.
I'm not 'in the tent' but my thoughts are that Quade would have toed the line with these 3 guys over his head.
Horwill and Genia don't give off the impression that they'd suffer fools lightly either.

Neither do George Gregan, John Eales, Michael Hawker, Brett Robinson and Peter McGrath... the 'other side' in this dispute.

It's funny you term it a dispute, isn't it supposed to be a negotiation?
How come he is the only guy in the history of professional Rugby who can't agree to terms without a fucking circus?
How can anyone condone this?

I reckon my biggest problem is that it's nearly December and the contracts of key players are still not finalised.

I also don't like the way the ARU pit the provinces against each other to make up for short comings in their own finances. I guess I'm a bit old fashioned but seeing guys like higgers be forced south because the reds didn't have the cap space to pay a player they developed doesn't sit right with me.

Not sure about that. Nucifora still has a job with the ARU don't he?

It's tempting to personalise Nuci as the ARU, because he's a bit of a dick, but those blokes are his bosses.

But yeah, we should add Nucifora to the list and take out McGrath.

I continue to rate Gregan, Eales, Hawker and Robinson very highly, even if many others think the ARU is gash. It will be a sad day when rugby people side with Khoder Nasser over Eales.

Mckenzies position is becoming farcical: he does not appear to have (a) any knowledge of what the ARUs offer is or (b) any contact with QC (Quade Cooper):

Either that or Nucifora is fibbing.
I don't like Nucifora, but since mckenzies position denpds on Khoder Nasser being truthful I'm afraid he's been played for a sucker.

I love that people want Quade to be a risk taker on the field but off it be a really conservative guy. It just doesn't happen. He tries the unconventional on the field and will continue to do the same off it.

put it this way, there is fault from all parties, think of it as contributory negligence, no one will get out of this scott free

Interestingly, the poll at the end of the piece
"Does Australian Rugby need QC (Quade Cooper)"
over 88k votes running 81% in favour of Cooper.
81% is huuuuuuuuge!

I think most of the reason why some contracts are still not signed is that for the first time in their careers, these players are not being offered more than they were on their previous contract.

There are two reasons for this:

Firstly, they're the star players who were already on high value contracts (e.g. Genia) because they were already key Wallabies. There is now nowhere further to go.

Secondly, the ARU is trying to tighten their purse strings. So not only have some of the players in question reached the ceiling as far as ARU standing goes, the value of those contracts has also dropped.

Higgers didn't need to leave the Reds. He left the Reds because he wanted to maximise his earnings potential. A team with lots of star players is never going to be able to offer all of them the same money that other teams with only a couple of star players will be able to offer one of them to entice them to leave.

BH81, I agree but I think the point Bowside was trying to make is the length of the process. It seems doomed to be repeated everytime a higher profile player is off contract. Short of saying that all contracts must be decided by a certain date I'm not sure what could be done. This presents its own difficulties.

The salary cap is a separate issue and the loss of Higgers is just a part of the game under it. Time to get used to less loyalty all round while the cap is in effect.
