A few of the cleverer ones seem to understand that most high flyers are rugby people, from a rugby background, went to rugby playing schools, etc.
I wonder if his (David Smith's) kids play rugby at one of these schools?

That's certainly true over here in the West. I've lost count of the number of big time corporate folks in WA who've either played rugby at school or uni. There are heaps of them and many are involved in their local clubs.

Whilst I know the quote is referencing the contribution these guys have made in the west, the same sort of people have also been involved in the game on the East coast, and still we find ourselves neck deep in the mire!

Now is the time for some brave, new direction type thinking, not a different way to dress up the old.

The problem with bringing in 'rugby school' types is that we will continue to see rugby viewed as a 'private school sport'. This is part of the problem, at least in Sydney. We need someone who will ask "Why is there no coherent programme of expansion into 2/3rds of the nations largest city?" To me that is the single most important issue.

Our player and supporter base is too small, therefore less revenue, less TV rights, less money to spend on development and a talent pool too small to support 5 super rugby teams and the national team in the professional environment.

Yes, indeed he was. Played half back in the first 15. My son played against him from 13's up. Gallop was pretty much always at the games and seemed comfortable in the environment - his son was a good player I thought
Why wouldn't he be? Apart from anything else he attended Canberra Grammar himself.

Like Martin Snedden, Gallop was also a cricketer (of much less renown though. He was an opening bowler for UNSW... from the end that Geoff Lawson didn't want).

Maybe we should be looking at former cricketers?

Don't let your rugby bias cloud your judgement. There are good sports admin people out these that don't play rugby, you know.

He resigned, apparantly due to the fact that he was over-looked to take the top job when AD leaves. He is hardly a reject. He will, in fact, become a hot auction item in Oz sports admin now that he is available.

He is also the top 3 guy in the highest profile, highest TV, highest crowd, etc, etc sport in Oz.

Can I suggest he might be worth looking at, at the very least!

Yes.

Though I hardly think he classifies as a reject.

All I know is he was overlooked.
I know nothing more of the guy and I fully agree he should be looked at.
i actually think we'd be better off with a CEO from outside the rugby world

The Australian is reporting he is rumoured to be going to North Melbourne to be their CEO. Not sure why you would do that. He is a very good operator would be good to see him step up to sort the ARU out. Bring a bit more professionalism not so much boys club.

Every bloke who has watched a game of AFL and has a masters degree has been linked to North Melbourne recently! :D

I understand you might see it as a backward step, but I don't think it would be the worst move he could make; National AFL Operations Manager AND Club CEO looks a hell of a lot better (and more rounded) on a sports admin CV.

You know Matt Carroll's length of service seems suspiciously as if he is mooted as a serious candidate. Hawker even said it himself that he was a candidate. I seriously hope it isn't Caroll. He did a wonderful job as the CEO of RWC 2003 but I think it is time for the guy to move aside and move on as we need someone from outside to deal with these recommendations from the Governance Report.
