And Scots have dropped a long way as well, many staff have left in the last 4 years. Rugby has improved but.at the same time academic results have gone down. I think upwards of 30 full time teaching staff left in 2009-10, which is huge in any school and unheard of in a GPS school.
.

Just to add, Scots have lost 35 teachers in the past 12 months (2011-2012). The accumulated experience amongst this group was 252 years at TSC. I have taught at TSC for many years and have seen many friends lose their positions tothe "Western Australian" brigade. I am very sad to see the College fall down academically, but considering we are now getting "cheap" teachers to teach the results are not surprising.

If someone works out who you are you may be the 36th!
I get the feeling that the "powers that be" do not see their role as educating in any traditional sense.

interesting to note: scholarships for new end up biting their own school's arses. looking at the current 1st XV team, there will only be 1 maybe 2 newington boys in that team that have started in year 7! As an old boy of the school, i should make it clear that this shouldn't be repeated, if new is looking for a stepping-stone approach into being the best, they have to produce and grow their best from the ground (13s up).

Sorry to blow up about my own school, but the 2nds/3rds competition teams for Newington will be the original teams e.g. most of the boys starting in year 7 and not on scholarship, regardless of that fact, the 1st team has a great team and is doing wonders for the school in the short term but will it help in the long term??

(ill put it on the scholarship thread, see what they think bout this)

Hey GP Srow.

I've heard Tepai Morea(sic) has been selected in the Parramatta NYC squad (Toyota Cup). So he will need to chose either Parramatta or Newington. As an OB, any idea which way he will go; league or union?

well the way i see it, is if he does choose league......he may lead the other rugby league players e.g. joey and taane in the 1st XV to choose the same option in the future. Secondly, there will be no real need for tepai to add anything 'sport' wise to the school apart from breaking the annual shot-putting record by 2-3 metres ever year haha, apart from that he is from what I've heard, he is determined to finish his HSC and dealing with the school's high standard of academia very well. Therefore, i think tepai would be better off playing union, trying to make GPS representative teams, schoolboy teams and then completing his studies and deciding whether to change codes or not then.

I'm sure the eels in their current state would be happy to have him now or later in the squad.

So has he given the discuss up.

I believe Joey Lussick (Parramatta) and Taane Milne (Roosters) are on junior contracts and will play SG Ball. So if they are not called up to the NYC teams after the SG Ball finishes then they should be available for the GPS comp.

For Tepai, it might be different - as I indicated he is a full member of the NYC squad, although he might play a few SG Ball games before the NYC Comp starts. But he has also been selected in the Oz youth rugby sevens squad. I reckon he will need to make a call early this year whether it is league or union. If he is doing HSC pathways - maybe Parramatta will allow another year of union.

Son attended first day of training at New today. It is not just for 1sts 2nds, U16s are also allowed to go.It is in no way compulsory and is just 1 hr weights and 1 hr skills twice a week. I think there were only about 15 there today.

I have also heard that Kings are doing some very early season work as well during the current holidays - any confirmation of this? - CTPE you might know?

Not correct as the total focus sports wise during this long holiday break is on rowing. There is a strong culture at King's on not impinging on other sports during that sports main season and rightly so as it gives all sports the opportunity to have access to its best athletes. The rugby playing rowers will be very fit come the end of their season but may need to bulk up a touch before rugby commences. As for potential 1sts and 2nd players who don't row they were given personal training program's at the end of last term but it's totally up to the individual as to how much they put in during the holidays.

When did Tepai and Joey start at New? I know Taane came term 4 2011. I know Taane is playing SG Ball again this year and may have a run with the U20s but won' t New want him to play for school seeing he's there on a rugby scholarship?
Tim Lee and Lochie Anderson should have a good chance of playing 1sts this year- they both started in year 7

Tepai would have started at New in Year 8 or 9, came from Patrician Brothers, Blacktown. I'm unsure re: Joey.

The SG ball comp will have finished prior to the GPS commences, but if they are promoted to NYC it would depend on their league contract as to which takes priority.

Please see previous postings relative to late starters :

MrRugby37 said:
There are many boys from all GPS schools who may come late, who have still had family at the school previously. Sandell from Joey's had an older brother who went through, yet Matt started late. Stacy from King's is 6th generation, on both his father and mothers side. Burke from King's did have a grandfather there (apparently) Connor from King's also had a brother before him, he only started in year 9. There may be a number of reasons for starting late.
Exactly Mr Rugby! My young man only started as a boarder at Newington in Year 11 - despite being enrolled as an embryo! :).
Regardless of his previous schools this was the best time for HIM, for ME and for his future - regardless of rugby! He is 20% higher in his marks at school and is handling his sport commitments well!
In addition it should be noted that his uncle, cousin, and his great uncle all attended the school! His Grandparents ( who are footing the bill! ) couldn't be happier - thank God for the "living will" ! :)

see the year 12 cohort of newington and look at the scholarships and late comers into the school, ( i know the lad your talking about, SM???) he would be one few exceptions. good on him and he would definitely be my pick in new 1st XV, stocky, fit and has a heart of gold for what rugby is and how it is meant to played.

Its an interesting thing this yr 12 at Newington there are obvious reasons for wanting to win, but they have been a strong side right through the age groups. It would be tragic if kids like Tim Lee, lachlan Anderson and Jordan Roods miss out on first XV. All very capable footballers. (and these 3 are not the only ones)

I would also think due to the strength of this age since Yr7 there will be more than you suspect GPSrow

GPSrow it's a working progress of developing kids from 13's up, and it needs a lot of support from parents and the ONU. May I suggest to you to support Newington's Rugby by joining the Newington Rugby Support Group and you will understand the present and future of Newington's Rugby. Cheers.
