"For weeks on end, the Sydney media have bombarded us with frothy Folau stories, and how this footballing phenomena"
Surely, "phenomenon"?

This phrase is also interesting.

Poor Tapuai, forgotten by Mr Had-one-too-many Guinness.

I wouldn't even call it "shameless" journalism - just poor journalism.

Not to mention that the tackle was so ineffective that had Quirk had no support he could have easily placed the ball stood up and picked it up to score himself!

So now we complain when we get media coverage?

Folau has cross code interest from AFL & NRL supporters, it isn't surprising that he is getting coverage and I am actually happier to see him not kill it in 3 games.

Can you imagine the NRL writer's snipes if he was smashing everyone and running with ease so quickly?

Now that would be media coverage I wouldn't like to see.

I get what you are saying, fp. I agree that media coverage of our game is critical and most welcome.

What I think you are seeing here is not criticism of media coverage; it is criticism of piss-poor/lazy/biased media coverage.

I don't buy the line that "any publicity is good publicity".

Good points - but remember how union was blamed for Tahu's woes - the mungo "writers" will find a way to blame us

What was Rupert Guinness meant to write? He was going to be writing a similar column regardless of how Folau played. If Folau had played a blinder he would have had a lot more to work with.

As it is, Folau didn't play well and thus the column was fairly devoid of content.

I think it's better that Guinness wrote a bit of a nothing piece rather than trying to say Folau was the worst player ever after one Super Rugby game.

Agreed, but it is media 101, build up an individual, celebrate his/her success or pan their failure to reach the heights - hopefully both

You can see the same thing happening with SBW, and it is a win/win situation for the media.

NSW rugby journos write as well as the tahs played on the weekend.

Ed quirk at 8, he's that blonde hair number 7 bloke that played for the reds.

IF is years away playing for the wallabies if ever. I hope I don't see him In A wallabies jumper this years.

You can't sell it as anything but a poor debut for the bloke. For an academy player on $50k a year you would put it down to first game jitters. For a big money, hyped convert with a bucket load of experience, no chance. If you can't handle the pressure of that after years of rep league, it aint getting easier in test rugby. It's only one game but even with being gifted an undeserved try, you would have to be pretty disappointed from any point of view.

Just shows that 'form' from trial matches that weren't watched by anybody except the journos pumping up his tyres really means fuck all.

Considering it was Izzy's first ever pro rugby game I don't think we can be too harsh. He had a surprisingly bad game in terms of handling errors and his positioning/decision making on the Shipperly try was poor. But there were signs that he's going to be a decent winning once he gets going. Broke a few tackles, made a nice offload, and he positioned himself beautifully for his try which is a good sign. I agree not a stellar debut but I'll give him a few more games before I analyse his prospects. Hell I've seen guys like Cooper and Beale have much worse games than this (handling errors + defence wise and those guys are incumbent wallabies).

I expect he'll improve next week.

I did not see Folau play league, but given that he came straight across from AFL to training with the Waratahs, he does look a bit under-weight to me. Obviously muscle mass is far more important in our game than it is in the AFL, and he will not be able to build up a bit until he stops training, and can spend a month or three in the gym. By which time, no doubt, he will be back with the mungoes.

There are some huge differences that he has to get used to, not just the rules - which most of us do not understand frankly, or perhaps it is better to say that the interpretations can be a bit puzzling - but also the contest for possession in our game, the amount of work that every player is required to do off the ball, the fact that the ball-carrier can be attacked after the tackle (totally different to league), the unpredictable nature of our game, the requirement to play both sides of the field, etc etc.

Anybody who doubts that we need some drawcards should have a look at the ratings for the weekend.

lol he had 3 excellent trials and 1 very poor competition game. He'll probably carve the Rebels up

Nice one Sully. In the second part of that article, I will reveal how Folau's younger brother once took two attempts to get his driver's license.

Also, his grandmother's flower garden has weeds in it. A nation is shocked.
gutter journalism daz....i have it on good advice that they were radishes not weeds....:)
