Cycling ettiquette

Not being one of the lycra-clad brigade myself, I have a query which those of you who enjoy shaving your legs may be able to assist with.

I live in one of Sydney's "leafy" suburbs (ie, the drains clog with leaves during every heavy rain) which becomes infested with weekend warriors in their Tour de France kit straining to contain middle age spreads. A couple of Saturdays ago, I observed a blow-in from another suburb, in a fetching lycra ensemble, set up his bike and before setting off, he urinated in the middle of the footpath (he didn't even take the measley four steps to shelter behind the large tree) exposing his cycling 'kit' to any passerbys. My question is which of the following responses is the appropriate one:

(a) glare at him anonymously and write a pissy post on a web forum
(b) invite him to use the lemon tree next time as urine assists the soil balance for citrus trees
(c) whack him on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper then rub his nose in the puddle, all the while shouting "bad boy, naughty!"
(d) beat him to death with his own bike pump

Other suggestions are welcome.

I think your main problem with this is that you have lumped him in with all bike riders, assuming (I guess) that by him doing this and riding a bike it is indicative of all people who choose to ride a bike. I think that what you witnessed however was not the behavior of a cyclist, more the actions of a dickhead. Dickheads can be found enjoying, often at the expense of others, many different past times not just cycling.

I personally would just mutter "dickhead" under my breath or if feeling particularly irritated it would probably a little louder. But then I would realise that it was just a bit of wee and just let it go, hoping that if a cyclist is due for a clip stack today, please let it be that one.

I'd reckon you should whip out the old camera phone, take a snap or two and post these on Facebook, youtube or some sort of broadcast type forum.

Name and shame, I say.

Several decades ago, when living in Singapore, they had a problem with non-cyclists doing similar in high rise apartment building lifts.

Lee Kwan Yew's solution was to install urine detectors in lifts which trapped the miscreant in the lift until maintenance staff (and Police) arrived to free them.

Their name, photo and address were subsequently published in the Straits Times newspaper following their court appearance.

Fairly draconian measure, but not unusual by the standards of that time in that country. It certainly acted as a sufficient deterrent to me, not that l was ever tempted to do so.

It's clearly a rude thing to do (if there's people around). But it's not like dickheads are banned from riding bikes.
