Thought I'd share some of my favourite albums of 2011 so far.

Raphael Saadiq - "Stone Rollin". Great old school Motown sound. Love it.

Destroyer - "Kaputt". Mellow 80s style pop.

Rural Alberta Advantage - "Departing". Indie rock.

Action Bronson - "Dr Lecter". I like the JayZ and Kanye collaboration but like this a bit more as far as rap goes.

Dangermouse and Daniele Luppi - "Rome". Soundtrack to a spaghetti western that doesn't exist, with Jack White and Norah Jones providing vocals.

J.Cole - "Cole World: The Sideline Story". First guy signed to Jay-Z's label, debut album is pretty good.

Starfucker - "Reptilians". Mellow electro pop, really cool album.

Wikipedia calls it Afrobeat, which is a complex fusion of Jazz, Funk, Ghanaian/Nigerian High-life, psychedelic rock, and traditional West African chants and rhythms.

A mate recommended American Bluesman Eric Bibb after hearing him live on 702.

Hey HJ if you like the Afro beats scratch around on http://www.kexp.org/

It's an Indie radio station out of Seattle. They do some great shows and its a good place to just switch on their channels and if you hear something you like you check the site to see what it is.

Try some Salif Keita, Baaba Maal, Cheick Lo, Orchestre Baobab and Ali Farka Toure.

And one of my absolute favorites: The Super Rail Band from Male. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqvk7W1R5qM&feature=related

Ali Farke Toure has done some amazing collaborations with Ry Cooder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MMjmlQN6xg

Bought a best of Mark Knopfler CD a while back. One disc is dire straits but the other is a collection of his solo stuff which is sensational.

Giving this album a second chance this week, it's better than I originally gave it credit for.

Pretty sure my neighbors are getting sick of this one. Sorry, but 90s East Coast rap/hip-hop (especially TCQ) is always going to be one of my favorite genres.

They are definitely sick of this one.

I used to love Bloc Party. Their debut would be one of my most listened to albums ever. I kind of went off them around Intimacy and Four. They just didn't have the same quality as the first two albums.

My music taste is becoming a bit more eclectic as time goes on.

Been enjoying the new Drones album:

and the new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

A band that had a great album last year that I loved was Japandroids

After a few years to calm down following the drop in quality after Silent Alarm I can appreciate some of what they were trying to do on the other albums. It's really hit and miss though. One band that really lost me by changing their style would definitely be Muse, huge disappointment for me.

The thing that I thought was brilliant about Silent Alarm was Matt Tong's drumming. I feel like they've never really replicated the complex rhythms on Silent Alarm on any of the later albums.

I agree completely with Muse. They used to be close to my favourite band and now I cringe everytime I hear them mentioned. They absolutely jumped the shark. They now sound like a bad Queen cover band.

Another couple bands/albums I've been loving in the last year or so:

Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Jack White - Blunderbuss

There's also a Texan band I love called ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead who are coming out to Australia later this month to play their seminal album Souce Tags and Codes in full. I've seen them a couple of times but this gig should be amazing. They're a lot better than their terrible band name suggests!

Hahah I started listening to Trail of the Dead when I was in high school right around when So Divided came out. I'm glad they're playing through the album because that's how their music should be listened to. Very, very good band but I haven't had the chance to see them live yet.

Before Muse tried to sound like Queen the hidden tracks on their albums were better than most of the other hits out at the time, is a shame.

What killed me the most with Bloc Party was the radical change in the way their guitars sound across the albums. Not only the musical structure but the literal noise. I'm pretty sure they changed the models they were playing and also some of the effects settings during production.

have you guys heard some of the killer tracks of muse's latest? Not the greatest muse fan but can get into the bombast when in the mood. But man, the track second law (think it is from memory)..the dub step one...mind blowing. Only have the first two bloc party albums so cannot speak to the later, but sadly the recording qual is not too good which is a pity.

let's hope I get this right in linking...trentmoller from the last album (just saw he should have a new one later this year, can't wait)

that said, sadly either I am getting old and cynical or the music scene at the moment is a bit stagnant. So much so that lately I don't even turn the stereo on but rather instead study music theory and sit at the piano.

So how do you guys find new music? All my old tried and trusted methods have either let me down or as I said is a reflection on the current environment. Two years running now, after finding it barren during the year have gone thru every album in the uncut best of at the end of the year and only come up with one album...sad days indeed.

Last years from that list was mark lanegan

I think I am getting to be a grumpy old man rather than music drying up.

Let's agree to disagree. I loved their first four albums and hated their latest two.

Unless you have an inferior copy/download of the album, I think you're just talking about the style of the recording rather than the quality.

Indie rock in the mid 2000s was full of fuzzy guitars and that production style was common.

Up until a couple of years ago I used to listen to a huge amount of new music. Now days I get a lot of recommendations from a couple of friends who still listen to loads of new stuff.

I still think there's lots of great music being released. You've just got to find it.
