Sorry that number thing is important.
Why should a person who has taken an UNHCR ticket somewhere to get to Australia be pushed back in the line. Consequence they will also decide to jump the queue. There goes any order and the concept of background checks become impossible.
So anyone on a boat goes back. Wait your turn for your number. 30,000 to 40.000 is a big number. How many country towns is that?

Sorry, how many boat people attempted entry last year?
How many overstaying backpackers?
Hmmmmm,what is the problem again?

If you arrive at an airport without a visa or have it cancelled your on the next flight.
Overstay and get caught you go home and penalized so reentry is restricted.
The problem is selecting who and how people enter this country.
I don't care how many it is. The process is what is important.
Next time a person lines up for entry to a venue and along comes some others that are let in by queue jumping how will that person feel?

This is such a furphy. There is no queue. Someone sitting in a refugee camp in Africa doesn't have a ticket saying they will be resettled somewhere once their number comes up. It is pretty much luck.

Australia has far more people claiming asylum who arrive via plane than we do arriving on leaky boats. Funnily enough, the percentage of people who don't satisfy the requirements of being a genuine refugee is far higher amongst the plane arrivals.

It is true that every asylum seeker we accept as a refugee who arrives in Australia by plane or boat is one less refugee we resettle from a refugee camp in Africa or elsewhere. This is just a fact of life though.

The assumption that the people sitting in a refugee camp in Africa are doing the right thing because they're not trying to get on a boat is ridiculous. Those people would get on a boat or a plane if they had the opportunity and the means. The ones that can get to Northern Africa do get on boats all the time to head to Europe. If you look at the number of African asylum seekers arriving in Europe, this number dwarfs the number of arrivals in Australia.

That's a crock of shit.
If the backpackers arrived and requested a visa for the time they actually intended to stay, they would be refused entry.
It's OK to gain entry by lying, but not OK to risk your life and tell the truth?

So much rhetoric and so little knowledge about the boat issue.

There is a genuine need to stop these boat arrivals but it is a humanitarian one rather than a boarder protection one. Fact is it is a dangerous voyage and safety of life at sea is a major issue. This turning back the boats is a big stinking pile of bullshit if I ever heard one. It is never safe to do so. Seriously, how long will it take before we start seeing these boats tampered with upon capture to render them un-seaworthy if they can be called seaworthy to begin with? This will put even more life at danger.

The way this issue has been kicked around as a political football I suspect would be a major reason why the public has such little faith in the current crop of politicians.

Especially as the Indonesian authorities have a strict "one tank of fuel per boat" policy. If you try to go back and ask for a second fill, they do it with bullets. In international waters.

That and pretty much everything else they talk about. Democracy as a tool for the people is dead here, thanks to career politicians and their ridiculous entitlements, fact finding missions (junkets), and childish behaviour.

They argue all day at work, then take it in turns to pay for dinner and write the expense off to us. Fuck those guys.

- Disband state governments.
- Maximum two terms per lifetime for politicians.
- E-parliament so they stay on their own electorate and don't incur travel expenses.
- Reduce the golden handshake.
- Reduce the tax system to GST on everything + base percentage income tax, and throw away the claims and bullshit.
- Redeploy all the paper pushers into a community labour force to fix schools and public hospitals.

Viva la Revolution!

It's ok we have bloody 20 year olds when elected in our parliament. How the hell can they have any life experience? What the hell would he know about an honest days work.

I want people who have real world experience representing us. A 20 year old just can't have any idea of the challenges that people of all walks of life face day to day to earn a crust for those who they care for while also trying to better their prosperity at the same time. He needs to walk this path for himself before he can sit in the parliament and claim to represent.

I can tell you (from good authority) that this sort of activity is happening and has been happening for some time.

In short, they've just voted themselves a pay raise.

Funny, I didn't see Julia and Tony arguing over this in public...

Some people shouldn't be allowed to work in media.

A Perth talkback radio host has provoked outrage and bemusement by questioning the sexuality of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s partner.
Howard Sattler offered the Prime Minister a chance to dispel ‘‘myths, rumours, snide jokes and innuendo’’ at the tail-end of a digressive interview on Fairfax-owned station 6PR this afternoon Perth time.
‘‘Tim’s gay,’’ was the first rumour Mr Sattler raised.

The only outrage seems to be from people who didn't listen to the show. I can't listen to afternoon talkback crap but that's the kind of stuff they do - put questions from social media to the guests. I doubt it was a big issue at the time, nowhere has the PM said anything about this.

I'd be more shocked to see the headline.. "Talkback radio interview with PM provides groundbreaking detail into south east asian foreign relations since the financial crisis - don't miss it".

I am not a fan of Joooolia, but thought she handled the twit from Perth Radio very well.

So what is Tim is gay? or not? Is it any of our own business?

Would it be any more appropriate to ask a married female MP (Moana Pasifika) if she liked to be on top when having hetereosexual sex?

I'd bet that the alleged bogans at Rooty Hill RSL showed more class and respect for Joooolia during her recent publicity stunt there.

"nowhere has the PM said anything about this."
What has Jooolia to gain from giving this issue any more oxygen than it already has been given?
Why would she lower herself (and the office of PM / Party Leader) to Howard Whatshisname's level?
That is why she has not said anything about this.

It seemed to be Sattler (dickhead) was trying to corner her into admitting they have sexual relations!

What was he thinking. What a dimwit.

Does anyone know who sits on the 'independent tribunal' that determines these pay increases, three times in 16 months!!

I despise Gillard (and Swan), but the bit of that radio interview that was shown on TV showed that she handled the situation with aplomb, even though she was obviously caught offside by it.

I now expect her to somehow allege that this is somehow a "sexist" attack against her. It must be hard using her arms with such big chips on her shoulders.

If she does she is forgetting the inquisition of a former minister who was caught having sex in his office. I remember the comment that ended the scandal effectively when the MP (Moana Pasifika) said the biggest scandal of the whole incident was it was his wife he was caught with.

I used to think the old adage about paying peanuts, and the resultant compensatory simians, was a reasonable basis to say politicians were underpaid. However, we seem to have obtained a more self-interested, fatter and stupider species of late. I think the adage has been de-bunked.

It seems the money you need to start and maintain a political career is what they really need. It's all about the power they so desperately crave. Political donations are the real problem. Politicians are held accountable to lobby groups who pay for their marketing so they can get the uninformed, unsuspecting mass public on their side. People who actually think for themselves are not considered in this process.

We should tax donations to political parties at 99%. It wont change the system at all and Libs/Labor would still dominate as they have been, but we could at least build some schools or hospitals with that money, it's of better use than plastering some MP (Moana Pasifika)'s face all over TV adverts that's for sure.
