Craig Mitchell, with 15 Tests for Wales and clearly frustrated at not cracking Lions squad, spent last night in the Brisbane lock up after deciding to crack something else after the 1st Test.

Welsh rugby union prop Craig Mitchell has been held in custody overnight until he can figure out how to urgently obtain compensation cash for a man he assaulted in Brisbane last weekend while celebrating the Lions win.
Mitchell, who has represented his country during Test matches, was arrested early Sunday morning after knocking Cian Barry unconscious at the Normanby Hotel with a single punch.
Mr Barry, who is the son of retired Family Court Justice James Barry, received stitches under his eye and to his cheek, and has damaged vision as a result of the unprovoked attack.
The court heard Mr Barry had been trying to smooth over an altercation between his friends and a group of Lions supporters after some jovial sporting banter turned sour.

He was first punched by Welsh tourist Richard Andrew Davies, and then by Mitchell, who travelled to Australia to watch the game.
Mitchell pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday to one count of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm, while Davies pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.
Magistrate Anne Thacker fined Davies $1000 and ordered he pay Mr Barry $2000 compensation.
She said Mitchell, who intends to fly home on Friday, should also pay a substantial amount of compensation.
Ms Thacker did not specify how much Mitchell should pay, but said it would be more than Davies.
After Mitchell indicated he was uncertain how he could obtain the money at such short notice, Ms Thacker revoked his bail and ordered he spend the night in the watch house until he could determine how he could find the cash.
His matter will return to court on Friday morning.

Sentence has been handed down.

Welsh rugby union prop Craig Mitchell has been ordered to pay a retired judge’s son $3000 after knocking him out while celebrating the British and Irish Lions’ weekend win over the Wallabies at a Brisbane pub.
Mitchell, who has represented his country in Test matches, was also sentenced to six months in jail, wholly suspended for two years, and fined $1800 over the incident.
He was arrested early Sunday morning after king hitting Cian Barry at the Normanby Hotel.

Mr Barry, who is the son of retired Family Court Justice James Barry, received stitches under his eye and to his cheek, and has damaged vision as a result of the unprovoked attack.

Mitchell apologised to Mr Barry after Magistrate Anne Thacker handed down her sentence on Friday.
‘‘My actions ... were totally unacceptable and unforgivable,’’ he told Mr Barry in the courtroom.
‘‘I hope you recover from your injuries and I’m truly sorry.’’
But Mr Barry said the apology meant nothing.
He said it was clear Mitchell should have served time behind bars given the brutal nature of the attack, but the magistrate was constrained by legislation.
Mr Barry called on the government to impose tougher sentences on people who engage in unprovoked attacks.
‘‘He comes running in from 10 metres away on the side and smashes me off my feet,’’ Mr Barry told reporters outside court, referring to the pub’s CCTV footage.
‘‘It was horrendous. It was unprovoked violence, everyone’s had enough of it.’’
The court was told Mr Barry had been trying to smooth over an altercation between his friends and a group of Lions supporters after some jovial sporting banter turned sour.
He was first punched by Welsh tourist Richard Andrew Davies, and then by Mitchell, who travelled to Australia to watch the game.
Ms Thacker on Thursday fined Davies $1000 and ordered he pay Mr Barry $2000 compensation.
On Friday, she told Mitchell he needed to be made an example of.
‘‘It has to deter other Australians from this sort of behaviour at football matches,’’ she told Mitchell.
His passport will be surrendered to the court until he can pay his fine and compensation. A conviction was recorded.

Mate when Parling came on after 70 minutes he scrummed down 3 times, all on the tighthead side - is that under the roof in Melbourne there won't be as many scrums, and that we can get the ball in and out quickly of the scrums that do occur, and that Vunipola offers so much more around the park than Grant/Court.

What I'm trying to say is: I'm more worried that Vunipola could lose us the Test match than I am excited that he could win it for us.

Yes I know he was on the tight side, Youngs is not the best scrumaging hooker and is very light, also venapola is weak in the scrum put those three together and we are in trouble scrum time, AWJ will resume his position behind A Jones, thus leaving Parling on the loose side,
Cast your mind back to Wales and England in the 6N where Gethin Jenkins another superb player in the loose but, not renowned for his scrumaging were able to beat Marla Youngs ad Cole, I believe the same will happen with the loose side of the scrum, no matter Adam jones is one of the best TH in world rugby Scumaging today is about the front Five.
Blaming POC for those scrums is convenient I agree, but what was wrong with Parling holding the bind.
I believe him to be a weakness and with no cover on the bench lets pray AWJ is not injured.
Just my opinion HSM.

Yeah I don't think there was too much in that, in an interview he said the same thing, just caught up in the moment.

No Plastic, I'm with you, I wouldn't trust the press as far as I could throw them. It's also why I don't get worked up over the crap that does end up in print. Don't stop your conspiracy theories though.

No I share your concern Dai, just wanted to make sure you realized he was scrumming down at tighthead lock in the last 10 minutes of the First Test. I agree that Vunipola/Youngs/Parling is a weak area of the scrum, and that you must scrum as a five, and indeed as an eight.

I understand all of the selections - Vunipola for his mobility, Youngs for his work-rate, and Parling for the lineout, but if we are forced to scrummage a lot, it may turn very ugly. I would have no problem with Hibbard and Evans in the starting XV, but I don't think Grant or Court are viable options except in an emergency. So although it is a risk, I think Gatland had to pick Vunipola. Do you think Rowntree has been able to teach him how to scrummage in a week?

Yes, let's pray that A Jones and AW Jones stay on the park - we are f*cked if either has to come off early.

I have no problem with any of the three I mentioned, Youngs has been
very good so to Venapola , players coming off the bench will more often than not make an impact, fresh legs against tired ones, If Parling doesn't make the grade who have we got on the bench to tighten things up?? Croft. I'll say no more,;)

They have checked this is legal, one hopes? Fingerless mitt not a glove so ok on that front, but would hate to see Joubert refuse to let him play
