Quick edit, I believe MNZ had 4 selected, not 3.

It is what it is - as we all know selections are a subjective process. But a few boys must be wondering what they have to do to get a tick next to their names.

For all the Under 15 parents expressing surprise to how the selection system works, your boys must be the eldest, and this must be your first time "in the big leagues".

Some advice:
Do not expect any level playing fields.
Do not expect selections numbers to marry up with team success.
Very few Coaches do not have favourites and prejudices.
It will not get any better for the next few years.

If you expect otherwise you are in for a rough few years.
Colts is a great leveller, but the odd one or two get through Colts on reputation.

Cream will rise to the top eventually.

Not making the rep team is not the end of the world. It will not harm their chances of getting a good ATAR or picking up a trade apprenticeship. They may still pick up a Wobs contract at some distant future.

In the selectors favour, I must say that some boys are simply not as good as parents believe them to be, or want them to be. This is partially due to the rose coloured glasses worn by parents and relatives, and partially because many Coaches have been giving parents inaccurate feedback about the child as they have progressed feeding the false expectations and the rose coloured bias towards their boy.

Best if you read all the posts before selectively choosing one. I doubt very much whether MWZ would outmuscle a full strength MNZ pack. Agree however that the backs weren't as sharp as last year. It is hypothetical as we will never see this match up.

The closest we have been is in the recent long weekend contest called the State Championships, where Warringah easily beat Parramatta in the semis and Gordon beat Eastwood. Gordon and Warringah played in the Grand final (for the third year).

Let's see now, let's combine the two losing teams into MWZ and then dilute MNZ, because its so unfair that they have won for the last three years.

Due to the weather over the weekend I don't think there was a team where their backs performed well. If you looked at the forward packs the Barbarians took all before them, their tight five were outstanding and nothing changed when they made replacements they continued to display their authority over the other packs.

Agree with all of this. Doesn't change the fact that some selections are mind boggling.

You do make a lot of sense as you tend to do in most of your posts - can we now go back to the slander, libel words you never hear in the bible!

Unfortunately I don't think the Barbars' coach was aware of the quality of the team he had. There were another three lads in this team from the ISA team that clearly didn't know its place the previous week Baily Doulton, Frazer Toohey and Andy ? (Oak Hill/ Eastwood)

It is notable that the instruction going onto the field before the first game was "Don't contest for the ball keep structure let them have it and let them make the mistakes."

Knowing the players here and watching the game they followed the coaches instruction contrary to their ability or playing instinct. This was possibly also contrary to what would be needed to be selected particularly if the selectors were not aware of this instruction . You would hardly call the 12/7 win to MWZ dominating.
Barbarians lost the game to MWZ on the back of two mistakes, it was a game they should ahve won always difficult to know what you have with a Barbars side I thought they played really well as a team.

And HJ let it never be overlooked that many more blokes play for Wallabies who did not play Oz schools than who did.
That is a massive indication of the truth of what you say, IMHO.

The intention has not been to criticise the coach at all, it was to share with participants in this place of the little information I have and observations I have made.

given some of the earlier postings about who was selected where and unsubstantiated views of how this process was managed it would have been easy for anyone coming to coach an unknown entity to not achieve an optimal outcome.

Well said HJ. The thing about selection is that as boys go higher there are more quality players vying for possibly the one spot, and depending on what the selectors or coaches are specifically looking for in a player will see many excellent rugby players miss out in that instance, and to be fair that is absolutely ok. If a coach wants a certain type of player then he should have him. In terms of oz schools payers not going all the way, doesn't mean the selectors are wrong or biased, it just means that at that point in time, they were the best available to them. Good players stop playing after school, weaker payers grow and develop and keep playing, it doesn't mean selection is wrong. If you have heard Eric Rush the former all black speak he tells a great story about when he was growing up he always trialled but never got picked. His father would always say " don't worry because its just one blokes opinion, maybe the next guy will think differently". When he excitedly phoned his father to tell him he had been selected for the all blacks, his father congratulated him, but reminded him its just one blokes opinion, don't get a big head, because the next bloke may nit like you. That's my spin on selection, if you play well, sooner or later some one is going to see your skills suiting his game plan and you're in, doesn't mean everyone else was wrong.

this year a number of factors changed from the best learnings implemented last year, and particularly applies to the u16s age group.
a) the knowledgeable rep coordinators changed at SJRU this year and the incumbent for 2013 didn't want to get his head around the issues until the 11th hour (even after repeated warnings). This meant that selectors and coaches appointments were not coordinated for the zone/sydney/state teams
b) the proposed selectors & managers information sessions (with ARU guest presenters) was postponed several times and eventually canned due to (a) above
c) there was no central coordination of the selection process for each zone and higher teams over the weekend of the State Champs. This resulted in teams being selected in isolation by the selectors and coaches who appointed at the last hour (MWZ excluded)
d) each of the three zones were meant to select their best XV with the Baabaas then selecting the next best (45-60) before each of the zones selecting their reserves. This was attempted albeit clumsily and in one instance incompetently
e) many players were unavailable or withdrew after the teams were announced (availability should have been ascertained prior) causing great angst by the coach and selectors. This forced the zone teams to then select players ranked 61 or higher.

This is why many players in the zone teams were felt as "not up to the task" by fellow bloggers on this board.

Unfortunately this naivety and clumsiness by the elected officials is of no comfort to the many boys who tried there hearts out in horrible conditions only to leave bitterly disappointed. I also get pi**ed off when people say all this is "a great learning experience for our lads and will hold them in good stead in adult life". There is no excuse for incompetence and ignorance in rugby today.

All of which is completely confounded by the statement in State Champs program that "Selection into higher representative teams, 15s, 16s and 17's is based on the players's performance in the NSWJRU State Championships"

and this program was copied from old editions without anyone reading it to ensure accuracy or validity.

So do we sack the unpaid interns who know no better, or the managers/supervisors of said unpaid interns , who also appear to know no better.

Who elected these people to their positions? Rhetorical question. I already know the answer. It was a competition run by WII-FM radio station.
