Leadership has been settled for the time being.

Tony Abbott should/would be nervous. Any electoral advantage that he had may gone up in smoke.

Kevin Rudd may increase the numbers in the polls - that may be a case of suck it and see (fair shake of the sauce bottle).

Interesting times.

I think that KR may push the election date back to give his leadership more time to bed in with the voters.

TA needs to watch his back for a challenge by MT.

Only problem is that the G20 is the first week of September. No one wants to be out of the country during an election campaign. Not much domestic politicking can be done and you could lose valuable air it e (which is what Rudd is all about).

If he doesn't go and sends Bob Carr or Albo or Bowen then he may cop it for not attending.

To think Gillard called 14 Sept knowing this just adds to the line of poor judgement etc.

I was hearing lots of journo whispers of August 24. But what do journos know......:)

I think Malcolm will wait until Mr Rabbit is the PM before his next tilt at the leadership.

A very septic presidential-style launch by the Liberal Party the other day in Melbourne.

I don't think that this type of behaviour is warranted in Australia.

What's the minimum campaign length? I think Rudd will want the shortest campaign possible, in order to reduce the number of times the Coalition can run ads featuring former Labor ministers dumping on him.

The time to election has to take into account that it has to be a weekend, you don't want any footy finals, test matches etc or hoilday weekends. It needs to be before end of November.

I would suspect a short campaign so as to not expose the "C" team of new ministers to much media or public gaze as some will be rabbits in a spot light. It also gives less time for those 45 who voted against him to leak.

Here's a scenario: Rudd goes to the G20, hangs out with his best mate Barack, picks up plenty of good photo ops and serious statements about his deep knowledge of world affairs, flies home, immediately calls the election for three weeks' time, apologises for running a campaign in the midst of the footy finals (which conveniently provide a distraction from actual campaigning, and plenty of opportunities for him to hang out in western Sydney talking footy and refugees).

He stills gets beaten but gets to start the campaign on a high and minimise examination of his and Labor's record. How much should I charge for my political advice?

Doesnt fit with his bizarre approach yesterday in which he described Abbott as a boxing blue and he as the kid in the library.
Since when did the bespectacled nerd in the library take any interest in loig?

Will the Kruddster be in a hurry to change the election date?

Well given he's done his best to distance himself from "Julia" then I think it's a safe bet it won't be happening on September 14.

If he pushes it back to October 19 or 26 - two dates that some Constitutional lawyer reckoned it would be in order to have the local Gov referendum and avoid footy finals, then the Parliament may be recalled in for the scheduled August sittings.

If there is some legislation that they want passed then this a real possibility.

Today the Libs seem to be pushing 2 messages.

(1) Kevin Rudd should apologize about repealing the pacific solution. And if Labor was honest they would re-instate the program that Howard had because it works.

(2) The insulation scheme resulted in some people dying, so Kevin should release warnings he got suggesting that there were dangers involved in the program.

I'm a bit confused by all of this. I thought Kevin Rudd has said he made a mistake there, and Labor has re-instated a similar program to John Howard.

And I thought insulation is a dangerous business because you are laying all this material over electrical circuits? So if someone said beforehand that the entire program will be unsuccessful if it causes 1 fire or 1 death, they would be called ignorant?

From when it became crucial to the election. It's league - two minutes reading the back pages of the Tele will give him enough info to banter with the locals.

It's confusing for everybody, on both sides. I can imagine it will take a little while for the Libs to settle on a basic line of attack against New Rudd, for now they'll just be trawling up lines that worked against Old Rudd.

Before 2007 election Rudd said he would also tow back the boats but changed the policy when he won. His version of No Carbon Tax etc

With two I think you will find warning letters were sent by Queensland unions and Peter Garratt sent a letter of waring to Rudd.
No one got a reply.

I still don't get it. If someone says, "we should return our foreign policy to that of John Howard", what changes need to be made from our current policy? Tony Abbot and Julie Bishop are implying that there is a big difference between our current policy and the old policy, what is it?

And yea, he might have ignored some concerns. What conclusion is drawn from that?

And Garrett was hung out to dry on it in a place without a postcard....

The asylum seeker / boat arrivals issue is the toughest frontline issue for the ALP because of the inherent division within the party over how to deal with it.

The Coalition have division but nowhere near the scale that the ALP has. There's really only a handful of 'wets' that exist - one of which will retire at the election.

Personally I can't stand the political debate from every shade because it has turned into base politics. I can't help but switch off completely. Good luck to Tony Burke as new Immigration Minister (for however long), but he too has fallen into the same political traps of the debate when he was Shadow Immigration Minister some years ago.

I will say that the review by Paris Aristotle and co was an excellent proposal by the Government and it revealed some pretty important information, however because the government and Gillard personally had lost all credibility on the debate before this, they and she just could not cut through and sell their plan with any kind of authority.

Having Rudd's key numbers man as Minister probably didn't help either and too Bowen's credit he quit after the funniest day in Australian politics earlier this year.
