Been a quiet last few weeks since the Gold Cup. Now looks like all GPS crews have entered the holiday training mode till camps at the end if January. Any news of crew results for schools in NZ? My understanding Shore were heading there as per last year. News of early camps elsewhere?

Grammar and High head up to Taree I believe, just a short 1-2 week camp to put the boys through their paces.

Apparently the Shore 8s came first and second in their races

Kings to attend their annual week-long camp at Jindabyne for 1st and 2nd VIII's, perhaps an extended squad this year due to many rowers returning from the Rugby Tour to Europe.
The rest of the squad will return for a selection camp at Putney before travelling to the Nepean I believe.

Full schoolboy programme at the SBHS regatta (Hen & Chicken Bay, Sat 1st Feb).
Hope all schools fully compete, without any foxing, and someone really stamps their authority on the 1st VIII season. Only 6 weeks later the HoTR.

Yep. It's such a short season there's not much racing these days, just a big plan to outfox everyone for the big one. Still reckon the only regattas that matter are those at SIRC as a the best indicator. In any event, after a few results last term, maybe Joeys will be able to nudge Shore off their perch? Any other contenders? It seems that if a crew dominates early in Term 1, then there isn't much time to knock them off…. when you're in front and looking backward, you can always fight off a challenger. Who comes second or third can change a bit though...

High to win on home turf come 1st of February. The shores of Hen & Chicken will run red with the blood of the other GPS rowers. Up the Blue and Brown!

Whilst shore and joeys are the only two boats to have shown any serious boatspeed thus far in the season, I wouldn't be counting anyone out at this stage as we haven't had all 8 boats line up against each other. Riverview and scots showing great potential early on, and having put in the hard yards this summer will be fighting to get their bow ball infront. High seem to be moving their eight better than they have in years with steve cominos stepping up for his 3rd crack at the Rennie, leading the boys to bigger and better things. Newington off to a shaky start in term 4 but I wouldn't overlook their chances for the Rennie this year with half of last years crew back and the determination to make up for last years poor result. I haven't seen anything promising from kings or grammar yet but the summer break can change everything.

Looking forward to next saturdays results, and the rest of the season ahead.

I'd agree with you that Shore and Joeys are favourites, but I'm not sure that High are doing that much better than usual.

Shame to see the Newington crew where it was at the Scots regatta, given the number of boys returning. Grammar also have four returning judging from the draw for this weekend, and given the racing so far they're no less likely a shot at the Rennie than New, although Shore and Joeys would stand in the way of both...

Kings on the other hand always have a shocking start to the season so hopefully for them that's been sorted over the break, they did of course come back from a similar preseason last year to finish third at HotR.

This weekend should be interesting.

Well I for one am very keen to for the Sydney Boy High regatta tommorw, it will really show how far some school would have come through holiday training aswell to see which crews may have even taken a step backwards. My predictions for the 1st VIII would be between shore and joeys but i think that scots and riverview will make it a very competitive race

Very windy out there today so the only thing you can take from it is how close they all were in 1st and 2nd VIIIs. Looks like this year's HOR will be a photo finish in more than just the Rennie. Spot on regarding View, footytime - they were right up Shore's butt and gave Joeys a little reminder.

Was also at High regatta yesterday and I agree, the eights are not yet settled, due to the windy conditions.
But if I was a betting man I think I'd stay with Shore.
What I noticed however was that we appear to have a new dominant....Riverview did well across the divisions.
And I thought the Scots yr 8 performed well .

Good to see Riverview front up well for the final - Improved massively compared to both the Joeys and Grammar crews. That said, given how all the other crews improved by ~5 sec, it looks like neither Joeys or Grammar had a very good final whilst Riverview had a scorcher.
Was glad to see Newington keeping up with the frontrunners too, maybe an outside chance? Fingers crossed, but Shore still for the Rennie I think...
State Champs in a couple weeks, should give a better idea of where everyone sits.

Riverview have improved a lot though to say they dominated is a stretch. Shore looking just as strong, if not stronger across the boatshed, including the 1st VIII. Will be a great year of racing based on Sat results.

I stand corrected MR, Riverview have improved but Shore still has the edge on them. Must have had my wrong shade of blue and white glasses on

No probs GPS Observer. Though am for the navy blue tis good to see Riverview improving and pushing for the title again. Want to see some good racing and hopefully one of the Sydney crews can knock off Scotch at the Nationals this year. Time we got it back !

Heard there was some clashing of oars at the start of the 1st VIIIs race on Saturday. Good to hear ol' Hen & Chicken is still a demolition derby especially under dodgy winds. Think it's getting to the time to move all senior rowing to SIRC. Such a waste of great facility and racing on it will only make crews faster. NSW Champs will sort out who's who….

I've only ever heard schools complain about making the trip out to SIRC. "School sport shouldn't take all day" etc etc.

They should HTFU.
At least you're not watching cricket all day!
In my day a trip to Penrith was like an adventure - the "car park" (doubled as the local rugby/soccer/lacrosse field) might be a dustbowl or 2 feet under water.
The boats had to be carried down but more importantly up a ramp which was at 45 degrees.
The cox was not guided by lane markers all the way along the 2400m course - instead he had to aim at (and miss) a white sticker placed on the railway bridge which could barely be seen from the start - at which the starter's instructions could not be heard over the din of the ABC helicopter hovering for that earth shattering but "snowy" action shot.
