They should HTFU.
At least you're not watching cricket all day!
In my day a trip to Penrith was like an adventure - the "car park" (doubled as the local rugby/soccer/lacrosse field) might be a dustbowl or 2 feet under water.
The boats had to be carried down but more importantly up a ramp which was at 45 degrees.
The cox was not guided by lane markers all the way along the 2400m course - instead he had to aim at (and miss) a white sticker placed on the railway bridge which could barely be seen from the start - at which the starter's instructions could not be heard over the din of the ABC helicopter hovering for that earth shattering but "snowy" action shot.

Luckily saw the clip before deleted - somewhat different styles (rowing and hair ), weight (avg 74kgs!)and equipment 36 years ago.

I've only ever heard schools complain about making the trip out to SIRC. "School sport shouldn't take all day" etc etc.
Yeah we'll, if its all too hard then that's what basketball is for. Looks like good conditions today at Henny Penny. My tip: Joeys to bounce back today.

Since Spieber enjoyed it I'll put i back up
I enjoyed that video too. If you have a link, I know some blokes who came third who'd like to see that. Any other video of races that day or did they just do the eights? Maybe it was the flow but the boats do seem to move a lot more smoothly. Could be the weight, once you got them moving they had more momentum.

I totally agree! If you don't like it then move aside for all the kids who would kill to be out there in any conditions but are too light/too short/not good enough by a split second. It's a PRIVILEGE to be in a crew so parents should stop whingeing about going to SIRC. P.S. you were right about Joeys, they dominated in Year 10 and are quietly working up to crushing it at HOR. Riverview also having an amazing comeback but might need another year to develop consistency. We are definitely a long way from the summer of 2012-13 when at every regatta, it was 1st:Shore 2nd: daylight 3rd: everybody else.

Interesting to see Scots make such a large improvement from last week's regatta

Well that's my daily dose of sarcasm satisfied!
I heard a Newington quad ran aground at the start due to the prevailing wind that picked up before the finals, is it possible that the Scots VIII, being in lane 6, had problems with the wind also, costing them relative to last week?
Judging by the heats it looks like Grammar got their act together versus last week, even if conditions in the final bordered on farce.

They did them all but only the VIIIs were resurrected for the purposes of the Gold Challenge - not sure how she found them but the daughter of the stroke of the SGS 1st VIII put together a video tribute to the blokes who rowed (and won) in the Gold Challenge for 78. SGS won both 1st and 2nd VIIIs this day.
There was not that much flow in the river: note in the 2nd VIIIs race how Shore despite being in the middle lane are gone after about 800m - the commentator was guessing.

Well a typical race at Henny Penny. Most of the wins came from lanes 1 to 3 where it was better protected by the Abbotsford Point and crews tend aim for the mangroves on the left which is the straight line. I'd say if crews won from the outer lanes then they well and truly deserved it as they copped the crosswind for most of the course. In the first VIII, thru my binoculars, I think Scots did start outside the course booey (XO's got the con....release the boo-ee!) after the starter had to reset them and thought well stuff it, no point setting them up again and sent them off. Typical joke at Henny Penny to make matters worse, some bogan in a drug runners speed boat was plonked 50m in front of the crews and effectively washed off lanes 4 to 6 as he tried to make a run for it before being mowed down by a Wintech. As I said, racing here is a joke at best when you have to deal with bogans on the course. All up, Riverview were in the best protected lane and came 2nd after Shore with Joeys 3rd. Best that really can be said is Shore are the ones to beat next week... as usual.

Great conditions out at SIRC today.
In the 2nd VIIIs, looks like Joeys is in form to back up this year with a 4.26sec clearance from Shore. Those pesky Crotch College crews are still a cut above the NSW boys but we don't seem to have quite the same approach to schoolboy rowing that they do, maybe a good thing or not, depends on whether or not we're entering an era of concentrating on single sports at schoolboy level... In the Senior VIIIs there were crackingly fast times in Heat 1 with four crews 6 min flat or below. It was pretty still out there so the itchy nerves of the first race must have accounted for the good times. Shore, Joeys, Riverview & Scots seem to be in the mix. A photo between Shore and Joeys in the heat. Come the final, the wheels fell off Joeys and Riverview stepped up to take third with Shore was second with a good fast time of 5:57 (we won't discuss the interlopers too much). Unless someone wants it more, it looks like Shore still rate high, get out in front and stay in front leading for the first 1500m before losing touch with Crotch. Looks like Joeys had a shocking first 1000m placing 5th before making ground too late. I'd say, if they can blast the blocks a little, they can still challenge Shore as they were a little faster in the last 500m. Riverview are definitely there to spoil the party and Scots are hovering. Newington, Grammar, Kings & High need to make up a lot of ground.

Someone's 4WD and boat trailer loaded with rowing shells crashed on the M4 this morning, anyone know whose it might be? The boats look pretty broken.

Rumour out here is that it was the High trailer, all the shells broken. A shame that it happened to them, of all the schools, given their limited resources – Shore would use it as an excuse to upgrade the whole fleet!

It was High. Driven by a 20-year-old on his P's, poor bastard. View had a very good day indeed, still think they need another season racing at that level to really take control at HOR. The fact is that Joeys and Shore are duelling it out and it'sa question of who will peak on the day. Last week the boys in cerise and blue had a disastrous start whereas this week they looked better. Another potential factor might be the constant crew changes in View and Joeys crews while Shore apparently set the crew before Xmas and has stuck with that. Looking ahead to 2016, Kings pulled out a very convincing win in the Mens U17 - though typically Shore stayed away from the challenge and were fresh for Year 10 races.

Always impressed by a crew that can do a quick mid 500, (ie; 750m-1250m), and Joeys look to be doing that, but on the downside, I would never support crew changes, pick your athletes in Nov and stick with them.

Looks to me that Joeys have established some form out of the blocks that'll make Shore nervous. Traditionally, Shore rate high and get out in front and stay there and still maintain a brisk rate. Joeys were neck and neck in the first 500m and perhaps dropped the rating to their mid race rhythm a bit too much before winding up the boat speed. I'm not convinced changing crew members is such a big deal these days. Shore did it a couple of years ago for various reasons and still won races. If everyone is rowing the same style in the VIIIs it shouldn't be a problem… you're always looking for the guys who want it (HOTR) more. Making the VIII isn't enough. In the past, crew changes were a bit of a kiss of death but these days, the attention to technique and style is pretty well established through the ranks.

Maybe just.
Farmer George insists that he got dropped at some point - but I don't recall that

He did, but that was only for a couple of training sessions for being lazy!!
Very good tactical move by Joey's withdrawing from Saturday's racing, not wasting time on an openwater course to concentrate on the remaining regattas at SIRC.
