Are there any old View boys out there (or sons of) that can explain what happened at the start of the '78 race?? The commentators blamed View for the 2 false starts!!

is it true the 78 Grammar crews only trained Tuesday and thursday mid week?

Yep. And no winter rowing and only 2 week's of boat camp in January.
But someone will now want to know how come they rowed for Drummoyne in the afternoon club regattas - was that to hide extra sessions? No that was to help Drummoyne win the premiership because Rusty Robertson (NZ mens VIII olympic coach) was coaching at Drummoyne and "assisting" at grammar and that was the quid pro quo.

Back to 2014. Only 2 weeks out, holy moly it is a short season. View putting in a claim last weekend that they could push Shore though still think the navy blue and white will be too good. Shame no crews seem to get involved in the banter as always interesting to see the thoughts inside the respective sheds.

Perhaps this thread should be renamed to GPS (NSW) Rowing 1978?

He did, but that was only for a couple of training sessions for being lazy!!
Very good tactical move by Joey's withdrawing from Saturday's racing, not wasting time on an openwater course to concentrate on the remaining regattas at SIRC.
There may have been some illness or injury issues for Joeys. Nonetheless, Joeys not racing on H&C puts more pressure on Shore as they look for the elephant on the water. Not sure if crews will race at SRC regatta as its the traditional fortnight disappearance act for schools to train, plot and play mind games.

Where is GPSrow? He could always spark up the thread with his unwavering belief Newington were going to knock everyone off?

Difficult season to manage psychologically, very short, not much racing. NSW school champs on Sunday, one week before GPS, it will be interesting to see who shows-up.

Still it would be interesting to compare the training load from then, for the 2400mtr race, to todays training for 2000mtr.

Your '78 work load seems very light compared to others. The GPS boys I rowed with in '79 at Uni were certainly 12 session a week guys (6 water/6 land). My guy certainly trained harder for his school eight than I did at school, especially over the summer break - we erged together :). Interestingly, he was stronger for the shorter ergs (sprints, 2000s etc) but I had him over 40 minutes. (sorry MR - segueing again - need David Jennings to give us a masterclass on HOTR training 2014).

Separately, it has been a while since we had a surprise result at HOTR (2005 when Shore came back in last 150 to pip Joeys). Maybe time for another one - I wouldn't mind if either Joeys or Iggies get up, if only to dissipate some of the anti-Shore venom on one of the other sites. Also, Mike Doyle is an excellent coach and deserves a big one at some stage haven't played 2nd fiddle in the past.

I don't think many crews will show up for the NSW Schoolboy Championships. Sydney High probably will (….if they have the boats!), as their programme seems to include a lot of small boat events and it's an opportunity to race against a slightly mixed level of competition. Though Kinross and St Augustines are pretty good. Doubt if GPS crews will go to either SRC Regatta or NSW Champs…. one or two maybe. I know at least one shed won't turn up.

I recall a lot more land work for the 2400m that involved 2-3 hours of running with stomach crunches, hill sprints, wind sprints (does anyone do those as part of a rowing programme these days?) It seemed like most of it was to harden you up without a huge amount of focus on technique. Weren't that many ergs around those days…. I recall the big fly wheel at SRC with the counter weight. All that changed from about 1979 when more professional coaching (under dubious guises) began to creep into GPS rowing, i.e. Rusty Robertson etc.

Newington will see a huge drop-off in the 4's and 2nd 8 in this years HOTR. With lack of depth, new rowers and a new Master of Rowing in the Newington Boatshed. Things were always going to be shakey.

Ps. The Newington Year 10 eights have shown much promise and with the 1st 8 contending to beat last years 6th place which should be easy. Top 4 easily.

it was illness, I wasn't there but heard it from a BRO.

Something's gone awry at the Grammar shed looking at the results — two year 12's from last year's First VIII in the stern pair of the Second VIII, with duplicate names in the First VIII? Seconds competitive but the Firsts out of contention again. Maybe the yellow boat will bring them some joy...

Hmmm this will make it intresting, trying to get the Grammar 2nd Viii into the mix.

Though in regards to the 2nd VIII competition I think Joeys and Shore will battle it out to the very end, because they are going back and forth.
Honestly I think that the 2nd VIII race at HOTR will be very tight, maybe more of a spectacle to watch then the 1sts?

We will just have to wait and see

Maybe the Grammar coach has lost the plot?
Understand the GPS Sculling trials are back on after there was an initial attempt to ditch them.

Where did you hear there back on? I was told personally by a rowing MIC some weeks ago they had been abandoned because everyone had gotten out of training in the singles at this stage in the season

Can't divulge my sources but I'm pretty confident it's on….

Top 4 four for the Year 10 or senior?
