You would think he would be a shoe in for the Southern Inland team aswell - which would be great 1. for the SI side but also great for the Monaro and South Coast guys to play agasint such a good player...

Any news on the upcoming sevens competition? Heard that city didn't enter a team?

I've been told there are 10 mens and 3 womens teams that have confirmed their attendance. That's going to mean a looong day playing rugby on one field at CRP.

From what I understood it as that the 'Wagga 7's' wasn't being run by SIRU in any shape or form ? Is this correct ? I also had heard a reasonably large sum of money being bandied about as prize money. Any confirmations or figures spoken of?

Correct @Bubba, the tournament has been sanctioned by SIRU (insurance) but is not being run by the zone. A while ago, there was $1500 up for the gents and $750 for the ladies.

It'll be interesting to see how the day pans out. The original Wednesday night format might have worked well?

Any truth to the Davidson/Cordwell rumours?? They have been getting around for years. The word is that the star half recruit for young was battling to get off the pine for Randwick fourths this year.

What's the story with token internationals this year?
Young have a handful.
Temora have kept the Fijians
Waratahs lost their Scot.
City picked up one and kept rafter.
Coota picked up three
Leeton had a cracking centre anyone to replace?
Has Albury replaced meakins and olds?

Albury has a pretty young team this year, I know their first game will be a big test for the young group. I think their average age has dropped from 31 to about 24

I've said it before, I think they are a very positive addition in the majority of instances. If a club can highlight a weakness and attract a player from outside the zone to fill that key position, good on them.

Southern Inland comps seems very good at recruiting players - are there match fees payed for some of these players? Or is it simply a good connection to people within the community that the clubs have to have these guys work straight away.

The most common approach is to organize employement and accommodation within the club. Some clubs can manage this easier than others because of there location to employment sources.

Most overseas players are looking for a contribution towards flights and help with accommodation and job. Similar standard of Aussies/Kiwis going to UK/Europe get return flights, free accom and small match fees.
I reckon it is good for the competition as long as it's not over the top. 1 maybe 2, three if your desperate.
Thoughts?

Seems to work well enough for the Steamers, they had the Welsh lads - although only for a year. Matt Cook and Ben Walker were handy. Not sure where they are looking this year. No-one gets match fees.

First official hitout for the majority of clubs this weekend at the Summer of Sevens at Conolly Park. Will be interesting to see how the different teams shape up for the day. It's going to be fairly warm in Wagga tomorrow and a 12noon start time will have some warm games played during the afternoon.

Some news pieces on the Sevens:

http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/story/2133151/waratahs-stacking-sevens-team/?cs=149 - Waratahs are obviously taking the sevens seriously.

http://www.dailyadvertiser.com.au/story/2130764/crash-costly-for-challacombe/?cs=149 - Rough news for the Phantoms if Bart is rubbed out for the season.

Summer of Sevens:

Men's Winner: Ozbocks
Runners Up: CSU Reddies
Men's Player of the Tournament: Gary Bautz

Women's Winner: Leeton Dianas
Runners Up: Temora Tuskerettes
Women's Player of the Tournament: Monique Higgins

I don't have the final scores for the games but the Ozbocks won convincingly and the Dianas got up by roughly a try from memory.

Great day, well run and all games played in a fun spirit.

Who are you trying to fool Hugh?

One of the tahs boys who admits to not been to every training, told me he has seen Corks a few times but has not seen Armstrong or any others. I recon it would be good for the comp if they stay at Ag for another year provided there are plans in place to develop others. If they are only there to delay a failure next year then I'm sure they will enjoy themselves more at tahs.

Tahs Scottish lad, Jake Eaglesham has returned home from Uni Norths in Canberra back to Tah land.
Not sure the circumstances but a good return for tahs on someone who a month ago was no longer in their plans.

Just noticed that the Griffith Blacks have not entered a 3rd grade team.

I would have thought that in a city the size of Griffith (25 -30K?) they could field 3 teams.
With the massive population of Pacific Islanders & young men in the city I am very surprised that they are unable to do so.
Good on Tumut though for making a commitment to the entire season for 2014.

I guess, like all teams, it depends on what those people in the town want to play. Group 20 is a pretty strong competition, the local Soccer competition is also fairly strong.

I would expect Marika Vunibaka to be a draw card for the club and arguably increase competitiveness within the club. Does this translate into a Third Grade team? Not necessarily, travel has always been a hindrance for the Blacks and maybe they are best to focus on two strong grades rather than three reasonable grades. Only time will tell.
