I have always thought that it doesn't really matter what the flag looks like. Why waste time and money changing it?

Who needs an official flag anyway?

This, or a slight variation thereof, works for most sporting occasions.

That's what conservative Canadians said many years ago, Sully, getting the new flag adopted was a close-run thing with old flag devotees just losing out to the newbies. Now Canada has one of the best and most recognisable flags around. TBH, I wished we had something similar.

Bishop: "I believe we will stick with the flag. There's no great demand to change it and many Australians have fought and died under that flag, sadly."

John Key: "being respectful of our history does not lock us permanently in the past"

The centenary would be marked with the present flag, he said, but as New Zealanders reflected on past and future in that context, it was “an appropriate time to write one small but significant new chapter in our national story by reconsidering the flag”. https://theconversation.com/changing-the-flag-a-radical-thought-not-in-new-zealand-24227

I have no idea what the Canadian flag looks like and to be honest have no wish to find out.

A point of clarification. When Canada adopted the maple leaf flag in 1965 the country had no prior official flag. In the absence of a flag Canadians used either the 'Union Jack' or the Canadian Army's flag, the Canadian Red Ensign.

I was interested to note that in the Niagara Falls area a lot of people flew the Ontario provincial flag in their gardens. The Ontario flag is similar in design to the Canadian Red Ensign.

This is being done by a man who basically said that a Citizens Initiated Referendum on asset sales was a waste of time and money.

If I ever meet John Key in person there is a very real possibility of getting immediately arrested.

I wonder if people pushing the barrow for a new flag are just trying to soften the public towrads another crack at a referendum on becoming a republic.

If so, I support them move whole heartedly.

And sadly another thing Australia lags behind our little brother NZ on...

Never understood the Australian mentality on being content with having a German octogenarian as their head of state and proudly having the Union flag on theirs whilst ignoring the original inhabitants of the continent. That said one thing I have noticed since being here is that many Aussies I've encountered don't like change and are very attached to patriotic traditions (ANZACs etc).

Maybe its my background but I really struggle to comprehend why the Republican movement isn't massive here especially with the increasing non Anglo influence in everyday life.

I'm happy to be a republic but my main question would be why? What would change? If New Zealand is such a great republic why are you and so many of your countrymen living here?

Didn't we have some sort of referendum years ago about the flag?

The designs that came out were attrocious & I am guessing that is why it was not changed.

Personally..... I agree with Ms Bishop. A lot of people have fought and died under that flag, why should we change it and what is our right to do so? From what I can see & understand the Canadian situation was different. They did not have an offical national flag so chose one.

On the rebublican angle - all I can thing of is what a giant waste of money it would be. We are an indepentant country so what would be the reason replacing one essentially cerimonially head of state with another?

I like the current flag and see no point changing it. What are proponents of change wanting to replace it with? Coat of arms on a green background or a bigger emphasis on the southern cross would be two options off the top of my head.

Flag is fine and while I would support becoming a republic it seems like a waste of time and money for little return. Hate to say it but our anthem is fairly meh, can we change that first?
