What a day of racing out at sirc, Shore have proved that it was not the shirlaw magic for all those years. The shore 1st VIII won their race in a typical fashion with a a solid clear water lead on joeys and they retain the major rennie for the 6/7 years. The 2nd VIII was the most thrilling race of the day as Joeys had backed Shore into a corner with a 2 second lead going into the last 500, the Shore stroke lifted the rate to 40+ as they flew past the cerise. I have a strong feeling that David Jennings will be keeping a very close eye on the Shore 2nd VIII stroke for the season to come as he is only in year 11.

The Ubergang magic was there once again as for the second consecutive year shore took out the 1st and 2nd VI, with most of these boys in year 11, it provides a strong backbone for the Shore 8s next year. Great season by all.

Though a Shore supporter am beginning to feel sorry for Joeys. So many 2nds and 3rds over the last 10 odd years without winning. Definitely deserve a win and have an excellent rowing programme in place. Only a matter of time. I guess everyone else had to withstand their rugby juggernaut for so many years is some consolation.

Yep, looking at next year and Shore will be strong. Their Year 10 8's from 2 years ago dominated so is a telling stat that they will be very hard to knock off the perch. David Jennings has an amazing record, let's just hope he loves the place and wants to stay for many years. The rowers certainly appreciate his expertise and guidance.

One Scots parent I spoke to wanted to buy the Shore shed and coaching staff. Not sure whether they are really bad losers or their headmaster who seems to be a marketing machine has convinced them that no other school compares and that no one else has the resources or money to match. So in short, when someone does beat Shore, I just hope tis not them.......the kids and parents are already up themselves enough.

Major Rennie - rather than arrogance, I'd take that comment as a compliment to the Shore coaching staff and shed. They clearly do an outstanding job and this is widely recognised.

The Shirlaw legacy lives on - a shed in good shape, boats always in a fit state to go out, order on the pontoons. Also, junior crews less dominant than in recent years - maybe the changing demographics of Shore will catch up with the rowing program?

Based on Year 10 results last year, Shore have a very strong group for 2015. Grammar, Kings and Joeys also look to be ok. Hope that there will be some tight racing.

Shore smoking at the Aussie championships - a 5.54 semi win with little pressure - look to be a couple of seconds ahead of Scotch who had a tough semi getting over Joeys.

Also Shore Quad 1 doing extremely well today with the fastest semi time, maybe they will knock off Kinross and Nudgee, can't see the other Shore quad doing much in the B final.

Shore to train hard over the winter in 2014
Rumours have been told that the crews not rowing in the national titles event for rowing have had their only break before starting their preparations in coming weeks for next season. The Shore school picked up 4/6 of the GPS divisions, but served a weak set of results through the Junior 8's. Whilst there is some individual talent among the junior crews, the MIC of Rowing will have to step up the expectations for these junior boys when joining the experienced remaining GPS squad.

2nd VII - Joeys
1st IV - Shore
2nd IV - Kings
3rd VI - Shore (If still being coached by Cameron Girldestone & Geoff Stewart)
4th VI - Scots

The 2011 Shore junior 8s had similar results to this season, however Shore 1st junior 8 came 5th. Next season 3 from that Junior 8 went into the successful first 8 and 3 into a successful second 8

I sincerely hope the Shore HM, or some commonsensical parents, insist ALL boys who wish to row play a winter sport. Trying to talent pick junior sportspeople at this age is madness. What about having fun with a different group of boys while sloshing around the muddy fields of Northbridge?

Surely if any parent, or junior sportsman, wished to be so tunnel-visioned about his adolescent sports' engagement the lad'd be at Scots.

hear hear: all the research suggests that the kids who play more than 1 sport are better at the sport they eventually choose (when adults) too specialise in, anyway.

I think you'll find that at Shore, rowing is part of the whole curriculum, not the be-all-and-end-all. I'd be surprised if rowers were not doing their winter sport. Furthermore, if you look at the GPS sporting code of conduct, it is explicit in not allowing 1 sport specialisation.

They just do it better than the rest, and it is incumbent on the rest of us to be smarter, not just up the ante.

Plenty of Shore Old Boys sighted at Penrith this week including 4 in the victorious NSW Kings Cup eight - good to see so many still involved.

To all the people who think shore boys don't play a winter sport they all do, whether it be cross country or rugby. Winter rowing is optional and there are the odd newington and joeys boys there. Shore boys are just competitive and as proven in the 2nd 8 you can never write them off

Race report CSB8+: Shore got the jump on the field, Joeys took it out hard and were just behind Scotch. Shore kept pulling away, Scotch looked pretty ragged, were rating 38 for large parts but fighting it to get the rating. Shore looked pretty controlled at 2 to 3 spm lower and held off a late push by Scotch (rating 39) to get back a bit of an overlap to win in 5:52. Shore moved to a new Croker oar design for the regatta (they had been using Concept 2) and reversed the result from the NSW titles.

CSB4x+: Shore took it out hard, Kinross also started off well. Nudgee college (with all 4 scullers backing up from the CSB1x final 72mins prior...with one going 7:10!) started off very slowly. Shore pulled away from Kinross, around the bridge to halfway Nudgee made a push and even with their 2nd hard race of the afternoon, rowed straight through Shore to win comfortably. Kinross sprinted through Shore in the end for silver. Great result for John Bowes and the school.

CSB4+: Brighton Grammar decided against sending their VIII up and instead chose the four. Led from start to finish. St Augustines who have impressed all year didn't seem to row as well when under the pressure. In the end Kinross sprinted through them for silver. Great season for St Augustines. Great result for Kinross. Ballarat schools who focus on the four as their target event were disappointing.

CSB1x. Best race of the school events. Adam Bakker of Nudgee led and never got out to clear water. Tom Schramko from Mosman went with him and at the 1000m it was about a 3m advantage to the son of the Australian rep. Schramko pushed and just about drew level, Bakker pushed back and got to half a length. Schramko came back and got it back to a canvas. At about 1720m (at the bridge on the southern bank), Schramko makes a huge jump in rating and goes for it. Bakker sees it straight away and goes with him. Schramko cuts it to level with 100m to go and just edges away in the end. Both go 7:10 in flat water. Nudgee claim 4 of the top 6 places and then win the 4x+ less than 75 mins later.
