Really looking forward to MMM team selections this week . I reckon there could be some outside backs with serious 1's cred playing 4's not just because they are tired and living a life!

Some serious depth this year, gee a real shame about Jimmy G it looked like he put some serious work in in the off season.

How the fuck does the points system work?
Hooper = 6 points
Hingano = 1point
Huge arse has the academic in this field, emails I've received have me thinking Manly are 100% aware of the points though. Good to see there was no 0 points though as that's impossible.
Having a guess I think Hooper had a signature with the brumbies a while back, a complete guess as I haven't digested the in and outs.

Have you seen the team sheets yet, what caught my eye is the coaching brains of 4ths. Some serious knowledge there.
Malie not starting this week, did he hurt his arm or something towards the end of the game last week?

Re outside backs - Great to see Chris Yarrington run on in 4's and 3's today - scoring the final try in latter. Alex Northam scored 2 scorchers in second grade and should have been 3 (2 hands to put the ball down lad) in a seriously shortened game. He will be hard to keep out of 1's but how can you change a winning team? Damien Reti also strong in 3's with Josh Carolan - absolute luxury for selectors

Thanks Bomber - I'm up in QLD and was reliant on twitter.
Northam would have to be putting serious pressure on ones. Did you get to the games, keen to hear how the grades went.
There was mention of injury to Johnny Wonder, and Adam Crerar - were there any injuries on the day?

Another good day at Granville today for Manly.

4's had a good bonus point win 32-13. A strong performance from the team with No.10 Peter Squires having a very strong game directing the team and controlling things well. Forwards were very strong and gave good go forward. Nice to see John Loseli playing strongly on the wing and completing good game time.

3's had a god win 29-0. This was not an easy win. Score at half-time was 17-0 and it took most of the second half to get the next points. Parra put plenty of pressure on but the Manly defence was very strong especially on their own line. Again the forwards controlled the field and the backs showed some enterprise to get the ball over the line. Thought Rhys Dombkins was the best but all players continue to put pressure on those in 2's. As a side point this is the second week that no points have been scored against the thirsty thirds. Keep that defence going.

2's game was shortened substantially following a serious injury to one of the Parramatta players. An ambulance was required. From what I could see it was a rather serious leg injury. At the time this happened (20 minutes in) Manly had a 21-10 lead and were doing enough to go on with it. The backs were creating all sorts of problems with the speed of the outside backs too much for Parramatta. When play resumed there was about 20 minutes of play left. Both teams went at the game with everything on resumption but the delay seemed to have affected Manly more than Parra. The Blues got the final points on the bell to make the final score 21-15. Alex Northam got a couple and should have had 3 but dropped one over the line.

Firsts as has been stated got home 58-22 in a very strong performance. No hingano and they lost their 8 Vaku in warm-up. Still they are a class act and were very clinical in what they did.

That's 2 weeks and no losses in Grade with a bonus point win in every game except the 2's this week. The depth of the Club is very deep and if we can have a good run with injuries I can see us being a strong challenger in all grades and the Club Championships (I think all Colts teams won today as well).

I happened to be "close to the action" after Parramatta centre Dan Yakopo dislocated his knee. It was heartening to see the professionalism of the Manly physio (I'm sorry I should know his name but I don't, he is always professional and friendly) and also, in particular, the support displayed by young Malie Hingano to our Dan as Dan coped with the pain while waiting for the ambulance. Young Malie is a credit to his family and to his club. His interaction with Dan Yakopo kept everyone's spirits up (of course he was not alone in this but Dan and Malie seemed to share a special bond).

On behalf of Parramatta, I'd like to acknowledge the class of young Malie and the not-as-young physio. Much appreciated.

I'll update this thread when I have news of the extent of Dan Yakopo's injury.

Update on Dan Yakopo:

I'm told the knee slid back into place when he was put into the ambulance and he was sent home last night. We're waiting on results from an MRI.

Marlins top of the heap after beating Two Blues
By Adam Lucius

Two hard road trips out of the way for maximum points and a share of the competition lead – you'd think the Marlins would be reasonably satisfied with their start to the Shute Shield season.
They are. But there are a few asterisks attached.
After defeating Parramatta 58-22 at Merrylands on Saturday to back up the first round win over Souths, captain Ed Gower explained: "It's good to have these two away games out of the way and have 10 points to show for it but we would have been disappointed with anything less to be honest.
"We've set the benchmark pretty high this season and winning games like these are part of the deal.
"They were both difficult games but we absorbed all they threw at us and came out the other side with two good wins.
"But we know this is only the start and we need to keep improving. There will be bigger challenges ahead."
One thing you can be assured of at Parramatta: they will come out full of vigour and enthusiasm, especially against the boys from the seaside.
The Two Blues stole an early 7-5 lead to signal their attentions before Manly eased ahead 17-7 just before half-time though tries to Shaun Treweek and Richard Hooper.
A good start to the second half was needed to kill off any hope of a Parramatta resurgence – well, that was the idea.
Harry Bergelin's second try pushed Manly out to a 22-7 advantage and we waited for the cracks to appear in this Parramatta side.
But instead the host kicked again and narrowed the gap to five with two quick tries.
Then the cracks appeared.
The Marlins ran in 36 points to put the game out of reach and complete another all grades clean-sweep.
The classy Treweek contributed 26 points via three tries, four conversions and a penalty, while Harry Bergelin and Marshall Milroy both collected doubles.
Richie Hooper and young Dane Chisholm rounded out the try-scorers' list.
"Parramatta can be a hard side to put away if you give them a sniff but the pleasing thing is we kept the foot down all the way," Gower said.
The win gives Manly a share of the competition lead, alongside our friends the Rats.
The Marlins will finally appear at home this Saturday when they host struggling Eastern Suburbs at Manly Oval.

Second Grade

Two early incidents were notable in the reserve grade fixture, the first been two early tries for speedster winger Alex Northam and the second being a facial injury in the 10th minute to hooker John Wunder, meaning lower grade stalwart, Manly veteran, and local identity Daniel Nicholson was required to put on his third jersey of the day and put in a valiant anchoring performance in the front row, to the delight of well-wishers across the ground.
The first 30 minutes were all Manly, with VaeVae, Greer and Hartmann all threatening, and Collins, Sigg, Meaney and Alley prominent in the pack.
Manly approached halftime 21-10 ahead, but an injury to Parramatta player Dan Yakopo held up the start of the second half significantly and when the game recommended both teams had lost momentum and the viewing suffered.
Manly chased the bonus point valiantly but in the end it was Parramatta who finished with a try. Special mention to a worn out Dan Nicholson who completed his third game of the day, and even managed to place a bet online with his phone at the halftime break - no word on whether his nag got up, but Dan was to make his first grade debut later in the afternoon at the ripe age of 37, and well deserved.
Best wishes also to the injured player from Parramatta for a quick recovery.
Manly 21 - 10 Parramatta
Third Grade

Third Grade started the game with original propping corps scratched - a grizzly Dane Maraki out with hamstring difficulties, and the services of galactico and try-scoring machine Tom Mooney required by Second Grade.
Nonetheless, Manly began the stronger both in tight play and in loose. Hardworking forwards including Cocker, Mokofosi and Edwards gaining valuable yards while the diminutive but ever-dangerous Max Wood combined well with his tight five and a sharp-looking Cam Doofus.
Outside, the shadow of a furiously intent and focused Tom Chesters lurked, armed with two pistols in the form of Reti and Carolan and a dual action shot-gun of his own being his running and kicking prowess.
Manly moved out to a 17-0 halftime lead but it was no walk in the park - Parramatta ran and tackled well, and commanding defence from the pack and Dombkins in particular was required to snuff out some attacks.
For the Manly tries, Parramatta struggled to contain the centre pairing of Foils and Howard, who caused damage that was exploited out wide.
After half time, Manly had to withstand a period of pressure as Parramatta retained the ball well, and Third grade, aware that they had yet to concede a point this season, fought tooth and nail to defend the line.
With the pressure receding, Manly were further disrupted by some substitutions, an unlucky yellow card and some old-fashioned lineout throwing by the replacement hooker. Eventually however, a pinpoint pass from replacement Spencer Deck found Carolan for the bonus point try and a fifth followed shortly thereafter.
Manly 29- 0 Parramatta
4th Grade

JK's (John Kelly) side had their preparations disrupted slightly due to call-ups to 3rd Grade for props Dan Nicholson and Alberto "the Shark" Gomez Novak.
The two powerhouses regardless started the 4th grade game and put in solid performances before being hauled off after 20 to warm up for third grade - and thankfully their departure was very solidly filled by Mitch Whitely and the returning Tom Sparkes who seems to have managed the conversion from flying winger to cornerstone of the scrum with his characteristic aplomb.
4th Grade started on the wrong side of the referee and had conceded an early penalty and then a converted try within the first five minutes to find themselves 0-10 behind.
However the team was patient and once a hard-working pack, with industrious performances from George "Tito" Hitchcock, James Watson in the back row, and smooth-skinned cheeky geezer Josh Littlewood at open-side (but eager for a chance in the second row spot), helping to build phases which conductor Peter Squires began to exploit. Time and again Squires put Jack Eades and particularly Matt Hurd into gaps that they gobbled up, and out wide Lilley, Loseli and MacNamara were all class.
Tries to Lilley, MacNamara and Watson opened up a gap from which Parramatta never seemed likely to return, even after they converted a penalty minutes into the second half bringing the score to 26-13 Manly.
A few more chances went begging for Manly before Boland's smooth and lilting accent began to win the referee over - penalty chances were awarded and were kicked to the corner, and JKs beloved rolling maul was put into action.
Executed to perfection, a glowing JK emptied the bench, and strong finishing from Fakai, Metuisela and others closed the game. Players Player was Spencer Deck at lock who carried very well, tackled with ferocity and was a rock in set play.
Manly 38 - 13 Parramatta
5th Grade

Manly fielded a 5th grade side for the second week running, on a excellent surface at Granville Park and started well, although some handling and miscommunication on both sides limited the scoring chances initially.
After settling in, Manly began to string plays together and were able to break the Parramatta line on a number of occasions, with John Fakai and the ageless Eki gliding past a number of would-be tacklers.
Although outsized in the pack, Manly forwards worked harder than their respective opposite numbers and were able to secure quick and clean ball for then backs who were able to find space after a couple of phases.
Towards the end Manly had to bring off two props to prepare for fourth grade and the game opened up significantly but it was the 13 man Manly side who finished the strongest and came away with a bonus point win.

Manly 41 - 19 Parramatta.
