I have a interesting question. Does the leader of a political party, in this case Labor, need to be elected to the Lower House of Parliament? I ask as I'd actually like to see Labor look to future and seriously consider Penny Wong. Every time I heard her speak in the past 18-24 months she has come off and thoroughly impressive.

I think the PM needs to be a member of the lower house. Others perhaps don't have to be in the lower house, but given the importance of Question Time, you'd want to have your best performers there, and not have the leader rely on others to do that work.

After that "concession" speech I'm starting a KRudd 3.0 thread

"The party has some difficult rebuilding work to do in the next few years. I'll let someone else cop that punishment, and put myself forward for the leadership when we're back in a winnable position."

Paul Sheehan's article (from the "left" Fairfax press) sums up KRudd 2.0 pretty well: http://www.theage.com.au/comment/voters-to-cut-loose-hotair-pm-20130901-2sytd.html

Deborah Snow's obviously been keeping a critical eye on KRudd's campaign performance these last few weeks, and she didn't like what she saw: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/fed...lection-campaign-imploded-20130908-2teb1.html

It would seem the Liberals had worked KRudd out some time ago: http://www.afr.com/p/national/how_kevin_rudd_campaign_unravelled_MUATc7semL7gLrK69U2OvN

Not sure about Federal, but I remember Campbell Newman being leader of the LNP in QLD before he was elected to a seat and him not sitting in parliament and having to control things remotely.

The senate is reserve grade.
Remember Bronwyn Bishop?
She was a star in the senate, and moved to the lower house to pursue her leadership ambitions, and drowned.

Yer right about Bronny buggering up her leadership ambitions moving from the upper house, but anyone remember Senator John Gorton?

Include bob carr in the reserve grade?

Seems he can't pack his own PJ's when he travels. That would be far too menial a task for such an important personage. Instead of this the Australian taxpayer has to fly him First Class so he can get some free PJ's, and his suit won't be crumpled.

Here's another trick. Get the embassy to send his measurements to the next embassy, and they can have a brand new suit waiting for him at the destination. A new suit would be cheaper than an upgrade to First Class.

The Pink Batts thing will be forgotten very, very soon. It was a storm in a teacup.

Sadly four people died during the rollout. From what I have read, the rate of accidents was not really any higher than what ordinarily happens in the industry. It was just the fact that the rate of installations was many times higher than what would happen in a normal year.

Unfortunately accidents in the workplace are all too common.

Kevin Rudd is no more responsible (somewhat less so) for the deaths of those young men than their on the job supervisors that most certainly had a duty of care.

Yeah, it is farcical to suggest that a politician is responsible for the death of a worker.

Is Barry O'Farrell responsible for the worker who died at the Barangaroo construction site because he approved the deal? Of course he isn't.

It's not like the economic stimulus package was to send children out to mine asbestos or something.

Watch out mate. Remember we are on the way back to the glory days of the 1950's.

I have been reading a book on the history of James Hardie Industries and it brings a tear to my eye how they can get away with the travesty's they portrayed for so long.

I'm no expert but didn't the deaths occur due to a failure to adhere to existing OHS practices?

I am no Rudd fan. You are very wrong through as he will be remembered for the apology to the stolen generations.

Perhaps. I think pink batts, carbon tax made up on a plane trip to WA and the assorted other wonderous failures will be what comics and folks will remember. Oh and the hair issue.
