Was at Coro Club to see Griffith take on Leeton. Got there at the end of the women's game which was exciting and had the big crowd roaring.

In reserve grade i was particularly impressed with the young fullback, he carved up the defensive line. In defence he laid on some messive hits especially in 3 on 1 scenarios.

Griffith 1st grade are huge. The 10 for Leeton was roughed up a few times and the reserve flanker (also played two's) was a bit distracted by the supporters kids however put in a decent effort.

Lemmo.

Doesn't look like city are going crash hot so far. Still early days but am hearing for a team with a big forward pack they struggle physically.. Shall be interesting to see who steps up for them against the blacks.. Big hard hitting islanders.. I wonder who will front up ....???

#SIRU2014 Round Four Preview:
I don’t reckon any punters tipped the Yabbies over CSU last week and Temora going down to the Bulls was also probably unforeseen which I think is great for the competition, as each game will be a genuine contest. There are no clear front runners at this stage of the competition with each team having their strengths and weaknesses to work on during the early rounds. It’s great seeing such a close competition.

Another exciting weekend of rugby is on the cards this weekend and I would look at the Wagga City v Griffith Blacks hitout as the Match of the Round. With the Wagga Gold Cup on today, will some clubs be affected by their punting and drinking efforts tomorrow?

*Griffith & Tumut washed out Round One

Coota (10) v CSU (2)
From where I stood on Saturday last week, the Tri-Colours were hurt by injuries to some key players early in the match and they did well to remain competitive during the game. CSU will have had a week of reflection this week and may have been guilty of taking their foot off the pedal against Young.

I’m sure both teams will be out to prove themselves this weekend and both would fancy their chances of getting a win in this match. Andrew Glover played well for Cootamundra last week and will have a job to cut down Sterling Ross for the Reddies this week. I would suggest both forward packs are reasonably well matched and would expect an even tussle in this department. CSU will no doubt be sweating on the fitness of Brett Wendt.

Tumut* (8) v Waratahs (1)
The Bulls have got some good form on the board in their only match of the season to date but will be surely tested this weekend. I heard that the Tumut #9 Scott Gibson has played well for them after relocating from Uni-Norths in Canberra, I wonder if he and Jake Eaglesham played any footy with each other after Jake’s (brief) pre-season in Canberra?

Waratahs made a good account of themselves in the front row last weekend and would be keen to continue building on the platform that Chris Murray sets up for them in this aspect of the game. Tumut have traditionally played a tough forward oriented style, but my mail tells me they are adding some backline features to this strength, so Waratahs may have their hands full in the backline this week as well.

Ag College (6) v Temora (7)
This game was a great hit out in the First Division Grand Final last year and promises to be a highlight this weekend. Aggies are going through a bit of a tough patch (relative to recent years) and need to start stringing some form together for the 2014 season. Temora were probably surprised by an improved Bulls outfit last weekend and need to play to their strengths against the men in bottle green.

I would bank on some punishing defence from the Tuskers which has the potential to rattle the Aggies team who must dig deep against their opposition tomorrow. Ag College will be keen to focus on their set-piece to create go-forward to allow their backs the space to shine while the Tuskers will relish in shutting the Aggies down at every opportunity.

Leeton (11) v Deniliquin – 2nd Grade Only

City (9) v Griffith* (4) – Match of the Round
From all reports the match between City and Albury was tight at half-time last week with the Steamers running away convincing winners during the final quarter of the match. Griffith have got some form on the board to date, but need to continue on with their form against the bigger clubs as the season progresses. City will be without James Curgenven this week as he rests an ankle injury, so Rhys Cummins has some big shoes to fill there.

There’s no doubt that Marika Vunibaka and Dan Rawaqa are the stars of the Blacks, but I’m hearing good reports about their kiwi #8 as well and watching Daniel Dowson go up against Justin Sheridan will be a highlight of this game – two big units who don’t mind tackling!

The loss of James Curgenven will arguably upset the City Men’s preparation for this match and I wonder what impact it will have on their backs as their 2014 backline looks seriously different to last year with Rambo Lagaali moving into the pigs. The City forward pack has also undergone a makeover with some new faces added to the forward pack this year as well.

Some people are telling me that the Blacks are talking this season down and it is easy to understand that they want to focus on the footy, but it’s tough to ignore the calibre of players they’ve managed to attract to the club which will continue to create a buzz around the team all season.

Young (5) v Albury (3)
This is arguably the Yabbies great opportunity to show the competition how keen they are for the 2014 season as they take on the reigning Premiers at Cranfield Park this weekend. Albury’s biggest road trip of the year is always a big ask.

A greatly improved set-piece set the platform for the Yabbies last week, but they will probably find this match a bigger step up in the engine room this weekend. The Steamers pride themselves on a solid set-piece, with scrums and lineouts being their meat and spuds.

City pushed Griffith pretty well on the weekend. They are definitely beatable. Mind you if Vunibaka was even a bit fitter he would be unstoppable. I had written city off at the start but they look like they may come home strong. Waratahs seem to be going ok but leaking points every week.
What's going on with Temora? They seem to be struggling.

Vunibaka is fit enough and can turn it on when he has to. He's playing within the limits of the competition and is obviously a class above.

When will we see Peter Armstrong running around in SIRU again? Will he follow Dave to Waratahs?

looked like marika was only mucking around with his opposite number who looked like the size of one of his legs. Maybe if Rambo was at 12 and not 6, the mid field would have been alot more physical.

Looked like wagga city also had a former shute shield 1st grader/ex-aussie schoolboy/former brumbies academy player watching on from the sidelines. Can anyone at city confirm whether he'll be playing??

I'm pretty certain he's had a run in 3's this year and has been helping out in other areas for us. He's got a lot of knowledge and brings a lot to the table for us at City. And a bloody good bloke as well!

#SIRU2014 Round Five Preview:
There are some genuinely tight contests here this week, particularly after results over the last few weeks. This time of year is always difficult to follow as the ladder isn’t really a great indication of where teams are at – and from what I’ve seen of the competition, it’s going to be a tight year which is great.

CSU (2) v Tumut (8)
Along with the Yabbies, Tumut have been the surprise package of the 2014 season having picked up some backs which has added some flair to their game this season. Guys like Jock Mason and Will Reynolds must be really excited about seeing a Bulls team with some backs to match their forwards. Much like Leeton in years gone by, the Tumut forwards have been handy enough but a one dimensional game plan may have been found out at key moments.

Whilst Reddies will be hurting with the loss of Brett Wendt and Joe Tui in the backs, I’ve been hearing good reports of a fit and firing Sterling Ross along with a crisp pass from Justin Wakeling at the Reddies. These two guys are now mainstays of the CSU team and will be a key for them this year and the more support these guys can provide to the likes of Paul Hood, the better life will be for CSU.

Waratahs (1) v Ag College (5) – Match of the Round
Waratahs would be keen to stamp their authority on this match and carry on with their early season form. My mail tells me that Euan Bonner has been leading his charges around the park well in recent weeks and Coach Palmer will want to see this continue.

After a tough match at Griffith, Aggies piled on the points against Leeton last week. Can we rely on this to show us form – probably not, that’s why this week is important for the Aggies and an chance to determine where their season ends up.

There might be some opportunities for both teams through the centres with some combinations needing some time to gel. Aggies have been blessed in this area of the team in recent years but will want to support these guys as best they can this week.

Waratahs will also be keen to turn it on for their female fans as this weekend is their annual Ladies Day match.

Temora (7) v Leeton (11)
The time has come for Temora to deliver on their pre-season aims of being a top four contender as they need to start putting some results on the board if this is their aim in 2014. In truth, they’ve been very close to bagging some wins but may have been guilty of taking their foot off the pedal at crucial moments and seeing results slip through to the keeper – something I’m sure Apenisa Tudulu and Co are working on.

Temora and Leeton are both very proud football clubs and both teams will be keen to sink their teeth into each other in this match.

Deniliquin v Griffith (4) – 2nd Grade Only

Albury (3) v Coota (10)
A tough road trip for Coota no doubt, Albury are never easy to play at Fortress Murrayfield particularly with a wet day predicted by the BOM tomorrow. The Tri-Colours have been competitive in recent weeks, particularly through the forwards but have undoubtedly been hurt by the loss of some key backline players who will hopefully return to the fold soon.

I hear that Richard Manion is playing some good footy being ably supported by Ash Le Fevre in the forwards. I also heard that James Kora was still playing footy for the Steamers which I thought was meant to be a short term deal (and travelled to Young last week!)? @namtrak, got any mail on this mate?

Young (6) v City (9)
In years gone by, this would have been a lay down misère for the Boiled Lollies – not so this year, they’ll need to work hard to get the biscuits this week as the Yabbies have been a real surprise packet so far this season.

Rambo Lagaali was a standout for City last week with his effort around the park a real positive of the game, City will need Rambo to work hard alongside Justin Sheridan and co in the backrow this week.

The Yabbies will be keen to mix it with a team like City to see just where their season could end up, Aaron Seaman and his boys will have their work cut out for themselves in the forwards as well as the backs. It’ll be interesting to see what City bring along in the backline this week and even more interesting to see how the Yabbies match up in this department.

Kora is a bit hit/miss this year - wasn't at Young, and I think Nathan Bright is out this week as well. From what I have seen the Steamers will be in a scrap every game they play. None of the 50+ victories this year

City with a good win against Young, as with Waratahs getting over Aggies. CSU and Albury winning was bound to happen but I did not expect Temora to destroy Leeton as they did, however I've heard that the Phantoms were missing several key players.

Leeton yet to get a win in 1st or 2nd grade but their girls continue to dominate.

Albury v Cootamundra game a lot closer than suggested. 10-10 at half time, with Coota arguably in ascendancy. And that was with Coota having a string of injuries. The Steamers are playing with a lot of spirit, but will that be enough this year?

Brumbies Provincial team to play curtain raiser at Brumbies v Force, not a bad carrot for those guys who are keen to play rep football!

And thats where it'll stop. Although to play in the provincial rugby team is a good step, this rep team would struggle to keep up with the John Dent comp club teams. Cheerio to the boys who will play but more needs to be done for country rugby to improve and not just throwing in a "charity" curtain raiser game.

Chuck him straight into first grade I say. A prop of this calibre will most certainly lift this team where it needs to be lifted. He certainly was a great prop when I watched him play at gordon and parramatta 1st grade teams. Although when I did catch a glimpse of him in wagga he was favourably on the chubbier side, but he would still do the damage in the scrums and in general play. (these players never lose their abilities and skills)

Having a player like this bloke wagga city should utilise him as much as they can whether it be on the field or in a coaching role.

hopefully he'll be playing throughout the yr, would be a driving force for city to make the big GF. and hopefully when I return from overseas after a couple months I'll be watching city play some finals rugby.

Yawn. This has been discussed at length here on this forum (and many others). What's your solution? Where are the players coming from? Who's coaching?

Players get the chance to compete at a higher level, if they're good enough they'll get picked up. Case in point - Ben Leaper.
