NSW Schools - Trial Games and Selections 2014

There was some quality rugby played at the 37th and final Country Schools Open and Under 16 Rugby Union Championships in Armidale on the weekend.

New England Lions won the Opens with a 10-5 final win over Far North Coast but the Lions’ Under 16s lost their final, vanquished 28-10 by Far North Coast.

More than 250 young rugby players from country zones across the state took part in the 37th championships, which were selection trials for NSW Country Schoolboys sides, as well as a development squad to tour Singapore and Hong Kong next year.

In the Opens, New England Schools, Far North Coast Schools, Mid North Coast Schools and Central Schools vied for the Bernie McGrane Shield, while the above were joined by Central West Schools in the 16s, for the Don Wiburd Trophy.

Farrer’s Angus McTavish was named player of the carnival.

The Open team will play Combined High schools in Sydney later this month.

Was very impressed with the games at Pittwater rugby park today, especially the game between ISA 1sts and CHS 1sts

Despite all the huff and puff on the GPS thread about selections and who 'deserved' to be selected to GPS Is and Is, and who has the 'right' to a place in NSW Is and IIs, etc, those forum posters should remember the selectors are looking closely at all the school associations team trials, not just those with GPS boys in them. The ISA I team was an exceptionally good side today, and the CHS side performed admirably, (though not as impressively as their game v CAS last week). There will be a good smattering of non-GPS boys in the tops sides again this year.

Though we've never formally met, I'm pretty sure Lee Grant Esq was in attendance, clip binder and camera in hand, and a good match report will no doubt turn up pretty soon.

For mine, the ISA boys were very polished and clearly knew each other's style of play very well. They ran CHS left and right and got quite a few overlaps on the wings, many of which turned into tries. This seems to be their game plan to counter the number of large heavyweights in the CHS lineup. The CHS backs just needed to keep their heads up and count the numbers at every ruck and mall to counter this. A few missed tackled by CHS contributed to ISA's success. The ISA forwards were all terriers when it came to tidying up any loose ball and they were a well drilled machine when it came to ruck and maul. CHS tried hard, and came out firing, but ISA had too much ammunition in the end. Scrums were a relatively even matchup, while the CHS line-out again stole several ISA throws, and took all of their own (bar one).

There were a couple of Illawarra boys in Armidale for Country trials, they had a great half back who plays 1st grade colts, but he had an atrocious weekend with the boot and didn't make it thru, they could have done with him today.

Defently agree with your statement all the backrowers were exceptional around the breakdown but if we are talking about breakdown work you would have to include the number 2 aswell who moved round the field and played like a backrower

I agree CB. But the moment you start praising the fatties they get it into their head that they are really 5/8s so best to keep it quiet
