I'm planning a road trip to the high country because the tin lids want to see snow. Thought I'd go Tumut then down to Khancoban, and then come East and try the ski tube to get to the actual snowy bits.

So has anyone here used the ski tube?

Have a 4WD so not worried about chains. I just want to chuck the kids out in the freezing snow so they can see what it's like, then retreat to the dry warmth of the car. I've driven the road through dead horse in November but concerned about conditions in July

Drive from Khancoban to Thredbo / then Jindy via Dead Horse is great - although I've only done it the other way. I did it in Aug 10 yrs ago, had great weather so chains not needed (I had Audi Quattro magic anyway! ;)).
Very windy road, narrow at points so gotta focus, but the view to the back of the main range, if clear, is awesome.
When in July? We'll be there from 5th-12th at Thredbo, so if you come via that road then, get in touch and we can catch up.
Skitube experience is limited for me, but last time I went it was a zoo! Prob drive if you have the appropriate diffs!

Cyclopath, there is some very excited chatter on the ski.com.au weather forum about next week. Estimates range between 40 and 120 cm over four days. Excellent timing for your trip and my first weekend working down there.

Pfitzy, if there is enough snow out of this coming system you will have plenty of snow in the village at Thredbo and this year there will be a toboggan run and snow play area in the village. That will save messing around with the ski tube.

I've been refreshing frequently over the past 2-3 days.
4 foot storm? ;)

Yeah, and it's Thredbo, so way cooler in which to hang, despite a Thredbo dollar now being a fiddy, not a twenty!

I've been stuck at home today with a respiratory tract infection so I've caught up with all the news about the upcoming weather system. I must say that from previous years Jane Bunn, the WIN-TV Victoria meteorologist, has been on the money with her forecasts and she is very optimistic about this one.

Sounds like a good week to not be there, but arrive after! Although freshies are never to be scoffed at, the following week, and hopefully mine, will be great, I think.

Just got the 7 day forecast for Canberra on WIN - 10 degrees and rain for Tuesday and Wednesday. Any wet weather with temps below 11 is a good indicator for snow in the mountains.

Snow forecasting sites to keep an eye on this winter

Snowatch - Pete Taylor was a passionate skier obsessed by snow and weather. Now he has his own site for short and long range forecasting.

Mountainwatch - 'the Grasshopper' is the resident meteorologist sensai and has his own social media set up on Facebook and Twitter as well. The forecasting system reveals an accurate three day forecast so always check back in as it changes regularly.

Snowcast Australia - new kids on the block since 2012 this site provides a traditionally longer term forecast.

Jane’s Weather - many consider Jane the Oracle of snow forecasting. Long time meteorologist, Jane Bunn, is rarely wrong when it comes to snow predictions for the Victorian Alps

INCOMING!!!!!

Looks like 40-50cm in the next 24-36 hours followed by regular 10-15cm top-ups every 24 hours afterwards for the next 7 days.

Yes, it's getting hammered at the moment. Probably didn't help to have the news.com.au article with links to some of the predictions posts and comparisons to 2004 in the ski.com.au weather forum.
