Pfitzy, you need to become the match co-ordinator for your club like I have. The Vets winter schedule is a fine balance between rugby and skiing!

I'm rostered for the next two weekends at Thredbo then home for a weekend. Hopefully I will have shaken off this respiratory tract infection by Friday.

Nah I meant going to Waratahs games. I left Subbies behind a couple of years back when I got jack of being SuperVolunteer and Whipping Boy.

Either the weekend of the Reds game we'll road trip the high country, or the week after when hopefully the Tahs have the weekend off....

Beldisloe Cup in Bernti's is a Thredbo institution....I'll be there with the Clan Gibson Aug 16th

The NSW Police have made a good point on their Facebook page. Inadequate tread depth on your tyres will cause you to slide off the road in snow/ice/slush. Even if the tyres are legal, there may not be enough tread to filter the snow through the tyre and cause them to become slick. The police have noted that a large number of 4WDs have gone off the Alpine Way and Kosciusko Road in recent years due to inadequate tread.

hi all, no time reader, first time poster. A question for you though...so what's a ski trip in Australia cost for a family these days? If I was to be so free and easy with my cash, what would it set me back - say a week's accommodation and ski passes/gear (4 kids)?

I was curious about this, and friends said given the drive in and all the other bullshit about how overpriced the Aussie snowfields are, you're better off going to NZ!

Good point. The Dunlops I have are the stock ones (new car) and are reasonably shit.

Might look into some Cooper A/T

I'm planning a road trip to the high country because the tin lids want to see snow. Thought I'd go Tumut then down to Khancoban, and then come East and try the ski tube to get to the actual snowy bits.

So has anyone here used the ski tube?

Whilst the drive from Khancoban to Dead Horse Gap (in either direction) is awesome, it's not exactly the most direct route to the ski fields!

Are you just after a more scenic drive?

Unless there are crazy amounts of snow, just drive to Perisher.

Reg, it depends...

There are a myriad of options for accommodation. Staying in resort will be more expensive than staying in nearby towns like Jindabyne, Bright, Mount Beauty and Mansfield. If you have friends who are members of a club, the accommodation can be cheaper than commercial accommodation. I am a member of a club that has a lodge in Thredbo two minutes walk from the lifts at Friday Flat and it costs me $175 for two nights on weekends in peak season. I have to bring my own linen but the rooms have an ensuite and there's a communal kitchen, dining, lounge and TV room.

Lift tickets are marginally higher in Australia than New Zealand but the resort infrastructure is generally better here. Ski hire prices are comparable, it's cheaper to hire off-mountain in places like Cooma and Jindabyne but if you hire in resorts it's easier to get things sorted out if you have a problem.

I have friends in Perth who come to Thredbo, they fly into Canberra and rent a car, staying in apartments in the village. For them it's cheaper than NZ but the cost equation may be different on the East Coast.

Staying Friday -> Sunday of the Bledisloe weekend. Kids will be there - staying up stairs from the Thredbo town square Supermarket.

That's Mowamba Place apartments. I will be there that weekend but will be playing a charity rugby game in Jindabyne on Saturday afternoon. If you bring your footy boots you might get a run :)

If you compare apples with apples.
I.e. Stay off the mountain.
Then NZ is no cheaper, but it's much better value, especially if a) you have kids
And b) are not insistent that you ski 8 hours a day, every day.
Bear in mind, just because there is a blizzard going on now, there could be fuck all in a month.
The last time I went down there,we pulled into Thredbo the night before, there was snow 4 foot high on the side of the road in the village EPIC.
Then it rained all night, next morning...all gone.
There is heaps to do in Queenstown and surrounds, if the snow is ordinary,or you are just too tired.
Fuck all to do in Jindabyne.

That's one of the good things about staying in Thredbo, there are other options for non-skiing days. The Leisure Centre has a gym, indoor rock climbing, pool, waterslide and other activities and now there's tobogganing and snow play. Agree that Queenstown is the best for non-skiing activities.
