They weren't given the opportunity to play the 'better' sides in case they embarrass the school boy rugby breeding grounds! Frances was the only player selected on the bench of 2nds and yet last year he made Australian school boys a year young! What a joke! & shame on the corruption of the selectors!

how can you say for fear of 'embarrassment' when GPS blue beat ISA II's and and CCC only beat GPS white 24-17. Both these GPS teams are considered 3rd and 4th teams. I agree that these CCC boys do not get the same opportunity as the GPS boys and that is unfair and has resulted in little selections into the NSW team, but to say that the the top 2 GPS teams would be afraid to lose to these teams cannot be justified considering the matches played against the other GPS teams were not one sided affairs

As HJ indicated there is a special thread for bias in selections etc.

Be aware that the NSW Schools selectors pick the boys for the two NSW teams.

The ARU guys, like Manu Sutherland, pick the Combined States side independent of the NSW selectors once they know who is in the NSW sides.

They are happy to get good players in the CS team that "biased" NSW selectors have overlooked.

I doubt if there is any collusion between the two parties; so if a fellow missed selection with two sets of selectors I don't think there can be too many complaints.

There will always be good players who missed out and there will be next year too, like last year.

And there will always be thoughts about bias, like last year and next year.

But to blow off steam put those thoughts in this thread as HJ mentioned:

You think we have problems down here. Think about QLD.

As I understand it there are only 3 associations, 2 private (GPS, and AIC) and 1 public (CSS).

The Qld trials to select their QLD 1 and QLD 2 are held over one weekend. Sounds good but:

a. AIC have finished their competition before the trial matches. There is one AIC team at trials;

b. GPS have yet to start their competition. There are 3 GPS teams at the trials;

c. I'm not sure about the status of the Combined State Schools (CSS) competition but I suspect that they are like our CHS and that is that they do not have a regular competition and the team is chosen from a state wide trial. CSS have one team at trials;

d. Finally there is a Chairmans XV to mop up all those kids overlooked by their association, or from a private school that is not in AIC or GPS.

Down here, at least CAS and ISA, and CCC and CHS boys playing Colts or Village Club footy are quite deep into their respective competitions, and the AAGPS have at least played some rugby.

I like the idea of the QLD Chairman's XV, and perhaps NSW schools could look to a Presidents U18 XV to pick up the AICES and Country Schools lads, plus the odd "victim of politics" from their home association.

I can't see there being a realignment and synchronisation of the various school association playing calendars in both QLD and NSW in the short term.

I'd like to see the ISA, AAGPS and CCC association teams all get one more game, because like all teams, they do seem to improve their combinations and game plan execution as the trials progress. How to achieve this is the $64000 question, particularly given all the commitments that the boys already have towards HSC (and IB), and club and school sport.

With all this discussion on selection I would just like to say that I do not believe that a coach is always the best selector or visa versa. Coaches have a game plan and select teams to fit with their ideas whereas independent selectors pick the best players. Some people are good at selecting but not coaching. There will always be a perceived bias against somebody but that is only that persons opinion. As always the cream will rise to the top if the effort is there.

"So you will never know if you made both teams unless there is a leak."

The process you mention has been communicated widely.... but what are the fail safes to stop the leaks?

After all, the nod, the wink and/or the tap on the shoulder before the horse trading starts effectively means some players players will be the ones who determine team selections?....Yes????

This would be a credible answer however I identified quite a few of the boys from CCC play grade for the colts in particular a few of the big boys playing 1st grade. They play outstanding rugby on the pathway to the super 15's. They should pull out and concentrate on the colts after all the Australian school boys and the GPS boys get put into 3rd grade colts when they get in the real world. They get found out their! I'm venting I know but cannot stand the unsupported talent and I've watched a few of the CCC boys towel these kids in the colts competition
Just because someone play first grade colts does not make them a better player. Not all clubs field strong first colts teams.

Something to brighten your day - NZ 1st XV Rugby HAKA Kings College v Auckland Grammar.

I just love the way the whole school runs at the end to get the best seats. It happens here in Sydney with the school boy games I've seen and it happened in my day too (alooong time ago). The only time you didn't have to run was when you were in Year 12 and just took over a seat from a younger boy!
