The NRC organisers are yet to pick up on the fact that the best thing about provincial comps is not so much who wins the grand final - but rather who holds the shield.

So I thought I'd start the thread so we can keep track of who currently holds the shield and what games are classified as potential future challenges.

The less rules the better so:
Rule 1: The winner of the inaugural game ever is the first shield holder.
Rule 2: In order to win the shield you must beat the current holders at their home ground, or in an away game, if the current holders agree to contest it at an away game.
Rule 3: Finals Games don't count but pre season games do.

Currently Brisbane City holds the shield and their first defence of it will be this weekend against Melbourne at Ballymore.

Suggest possible names/rules/trophy designs below.

We should run with the Shaun Mackay Shield as previously suggested by the Pfitz man.

But I am happy for this to start next year, with the winner of this year's championship to start as Shield holders.

Picky. But yes.

I think, given we've already missed 25% of the regular season, it should be awarded to the 2014 Premiers to defend in the 2015 season. That gives us time to get shit in order with either the authorities or on our own.

I think in the name of fueling the fires of provincialism we should roll with it from now. I know Brisbane currently hold it by default - but life isnt fair, and if this competition is to grow into something substantial there needs to be a multitude of injustices to keep it interesting.

I think the NSW Country Eages should hold it because Steve Hoiles was mates with Shawn Mackay from junior footy and high school.

Makes perfect sense ;)

Hi Phitzy etc,

Fantastic idea about the Shawn Mackay shield.

So I was thinking how do you get a good shield / trophy / cup without many $$. Also be good if it also had a bit of a community charity thing as well. Which lead me to this mob. Mens shed. So if you read the information, these mob are national and just your average blokes helping each other to help others. So looking at the guys from one here in Canberra (Tuggeranong shed, have attached link for their flyer), these guys may be able to (with some input) create and build a unique “Shawn Mackay” .

I figured that with the local and grass roots ideology about the NRC it may be a good fit.

A great fit. There's been plenty of good work done in removing the stigma many men attach to mental health and wellness, and a relationship between the NRC and the Men's Shed movement would be only positive imo.

Interesting thoughts gentlemen.

But in the interests of fairness, I advise you both to sod off.

Pfitzy is a Rams fan, so the Rams get it from this point. ;)

With the way they're going you may as well just give it to the stars, is that what you want?

Pffft. Like the Stars are going to win... They can't even win arvo footy on their OWN ground!

This is a great idea.

My first thought is that it should be bigger and heavier than the Ranfurly shield! And a different shape. Completely round in the Greek style or massive and squarish like an ancient roman shield. Needs a cool rugby image (including Shawn Mackay obviously) that can be immortalised on the shield in the same way the image of Arthur Summons and Norm Provan embracing after a match is used in rugby league.

Would be really cool if the whole thing got started independently of the ARU - crowd sourced funding from rugby fans. We then hand over the Mackay Shield to the inaugural winners and the ARU officially endorse it for the 2015 competition.

lets crowd source it. We can use kickstarter or pozible or any of those these days in Aus.

seems to be a great idea.

...but first talk to Shawn McKay's family and see what their wishes are if we are gonna do this. But lets get the GAGR captains to help us make this happen.

I also know a jeweller who can either do this stuff or send us to the right people.

No point 'crowd sourcing' anything until you have the approval of the ARU and competition administrators. That's where you will get this idea up and running, forget the design/cost etc.

I reckon it's an idea that is best pitched at the end of the season. Let this season happen, then when the ARU confirm it's happening again in 2015 they can launch it as a new development/point of interest for the new year.

Start pitching it now FOR next season - strike while the iron is hot. Get some momentum going and have it as part of the launch factor for next season.

Otherwise in the wash-up of the NRC where everyone starts to talk about the finances and continuity in less ideological terms, and momentum is lost as we get distracted by October Bledisloe and EOYT speculation.
