As Qwerty already mentioned, if you're asking permission for a quick tap..it's no longer quick.

Would defeat the entire purpose and there is no reason that we should un-empower our halves from making decisions. The captain is far from the only player who gets to call shots on a rugby field.

We did it a few times. Wouldn't be surprised if it was a planned tactic. Keep the ball away from set piece and run over the top of them.

I think Simmons saved himself from the knife, but would expect Horwill to start over Carter next game..and not sure if Link would then keep Carter on the bench..when the touring party is announced it may give us a clue if Skelton is included.

I know Horwill didn't do a lot but neither did Carter (for the 3rd game in a row) so I'd rather the former's experience in Capetown...

Fardy was again in the bottom third of performers and if Palu is fit I wouldn't be surprised to see Fardy left right out as McCalman had his best game in gold for yonks and either Higgers or Palu would provide more impact off the bench..if Palu isn't fit Fardy might keep his spot.

Can't see any changes in the back line except AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) will come in for Betham..

Yeah, it's definitely a page in Link's playbook based on the Reds v. Lions test last year.

Has to be done in a commanding fashion like Frisby/Quade handled it in that match in order to make it work properly though. Even a glance at the captain and the chance is likely long gone.

Did anybody else also notice that Hooper cost us a try in the same fashion that Simmons did last week?

Makes me think that is something we are working on pushing the boundaries with much like the All Blacks due.

It's kind of stupid saying Phipps should get Hooper's approval for quick taps. Kinda defeats the point of a quick tap doesn't it? I'm sure they speak pre-game if they should do quick taps and in what contexts. Unless something good always comes out of the quick taps Phipps will get criticised but don't see much praise for it when it comes off like against France.
It seems they are trying to play an up-tempo game from several angles, and this is part of it. If it was specifically NOT part of the plan, I'm sure Hooper, McKenzie, McKay et al would be getting in players' ears to tell them to stop it.
But yeah, there will always be conjecture over these. I think we might be slightly overplaying the quick taps at the moment.

It's like the whole Phipps / Foley thing - if we play at speed, the error rate can be a bit higher. If we take 5 seconds longer at many breakdowns, the defensive line realigns so much better, and against the ABs, Bokke, Argentina and any other top tier nation, you'll struggle to crack it. So we have to accept the pros and cons a bit. I like that we are trying harder to play attacking rugby, and let's face it, in the greasy conditions we created plenty of chances from it. It's just the finesse of the final execution and some of the details that are not quite there yet. I much prefer this ethos to a safety-first, kick it away, chase it badly, get messed up by the counter-attack and so on that we have seen too much in recent years. In the long run, this more positive approach will pay dividends, but it takes time to get all the players believing and trusting the style, and each other, and executing it perfectly.

If it had been a one off I'd disagree but I think you might be right. It's occurred to me a bit over the last season or so that instead of whinging about the AB's doing it maybe we should just try to beat them at their own game. We should be smart about it of course.

Up front I thought we toiled effectively in some areas. The line out not too bad, the scrum stood up, our ball carries were effective in parts but need to be even better if we're to challenge the Bokke on their home track. Our tackling I would say good in spells but overall a level below what the Argies brought (and not within a mile of what was on display in Wellington).

Higgers continues to press for a starting spot. Our forward pack is continuing to look like it lacks balance at the front end of matches. I don't really think it's a great paradigm to think let's stack our team with our most high work rate, physical forwards at the start of the game and bring on the dynamic ones at the end. Both ends must have balance. I would love to see Higgers start at 6 with Palu and Hooper (who will be instructed to put his fucking head over the ball at all opportunities and use his not inconsiderable skills in that area). Carter was average, not poor and Horwill was about the same (though probably a little more physical in defence, though he was fresh at the end of the game). Not really sure what to do there. My gut says go with James for his line out ability.

AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) back to shore up defence on the flanks and organise

Be fucked the forward pack is lacking balance. We had 75% and 75% territory in the first half.

Our backs let us down tonight as we should have put them to the sword in the first half on that. It's probably an anomaly but they need to capitalise on their opportunities as we will rarely have that dominance.

Bledisloe #1 is a different context to this game. No point saying a quick tap is stupid because To'omua knocks it on. If he passes and someone had scored you'd be praising the quick tap yet Phipps has done the same thing. Take the good with the bad, at least they're having a go.

Imagine the stink on this forum if we had drawn the game or lost by a point or 2 by taking the quick tap

Qwerty I understand your point of view but I just believe in taking the points, particularly when in front. Out on the sideline i'd agree with you every time (nearly)

so Hanson becomes our #1 hooker and presumably Saia #2..looks like it's out of Latu and manta ray for the 3rd touring spot..I actually hope the latter gets it, what a way to finish your career..save Latu for the EOYT

What changes will be made ?

Front Row - Hanson will come back in for TPN - fuck - TPN's scrummaging is far superior to that of James.
Locks: Simmo improved sufficiently to hold spot. Cartner I think, did not. Horwill to start.
No.6 & 8 Fardy at risk from Mccalman as is Cliffy. I reckon Link will keep McCalman somewhere in the starting side.

Backs: AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) for Beetham if he is available
