Just weighing in on the age debate.
Reece Hewat, who is entering in to yr12 next year turning 17 years old and is completing a 3 year senior. This means that in his final year he will be turning 19 in what could be his 3rd year as captain.
Is the rule that you must not be 19 to play opens rugby?
I suppose it depends on his birthday

Reece is not doing 2 year senior. He finishes year 12 next year in 2015 when he will be 17.

Guys
I think a number of people here are missing what is being discussed.

They are looking at moving to class groups as the defining DATE range.

Rather than the current policy where under 11 is all boys born between 1 Jan 2003 and 31 Dec 2003 playing together as Under 11, which crosses over year 5 and year 6, they are going to move to grade 5 as the term and all boys born between July 1 2003 and Jun 30 2004 will be eligible – all boys born outside this range will be required to play up or down depending on their birthday.

The age difference between the boys playing will NOT change.

A very sensible approach in my opinion, all forced by the change in dates for the school years.

BAG.
Might very well be the approach being discussed BaG, but this will only be relevant from the current year 6 cohort down, as they are the first year coming through where the July 1 class date was in place.
If they take this approach with the current year 7s up, it will add another different age criteria into the current mix - it will end up all over the floor like a mad woman's breakfast !

As there is no under 16's championships this year is the Reds elite program that started today a good indication for the GPS teams for next year?
I just heard also that they have the squads playing in two teams as the game before the Qld Country and City game on Sunday.
Worth watching to see who they have identified for next year, boys are turning 17 and 18 next year.

Oh okay, so this identification Reds squad is to look at GPS teams for next year? I just thought it was for any U17s - does this mean U17s leaving school this year are not eligible?

I do not believe anyone was invited that are finishing this year.
only boys that are playing rugby next year.
Do not know if every boy is GPS.
But do know is boys who see Rugby as a pathway not NRL.
The Reds have been watching under 16 and 1st games and I can only assume also talking to coaches and Rugby Directors.
A lot of boarders from BBC have stayed in Brisbane or come back from their homes for it.

How does all this relate to the Junior gold program for the U17's over summer if at all? Both are QRU programs.

I believe the Reds program is invitation only.
And the boys that are doing the 4 days this week will be cut down to a smaller squad. Will be interesting to see who gets in.
I believe Gunter did it last year and earlier this year.
He is again been invited but maybe still injured as he did not play the last 3 games a few others from BBC are injured.

as Natal Shark said Reece turned 17 this week so turns 18 next year (2015) and under the current rules would be ineligible to play in 2016 when he turns 19.

I think what was being implied is that he would be completing Year 12 over two years (2015 + 2016) and that he would be turning 19 after the season is finished, hence making him eligible for the 2016 season.
Cheers only 1 year time to go into the big bad world

That highlight video is great. Just heard Churchie took out the rugby sevens over the weekend. The team has to be one of the best teams in QLD GPS history.

Churchies 2014 team was a great team, but in my opinion the BSHS 2009 team was by far and away the better team. I'm only new to the GPS competition, I will admit that, however, from what I have seen the BSHS '09 team blew pretty much every single one of its competitors off the park. Churchie this year did win all of their games (majority comfortably) however were on a select few occasions were pushed. The '09 team has produced some phenomenal players. It will be interesting if the Churchie team of '14 can do the same.

Who were the best players for Churchie this year?
.

Lee, for me, and using a whole-of-season view:

3. Harley Fox at 8
2. Angus Scott-Young (hmm, sound familiar) at 4 or 5
1. Mack Mason at 10

Ponga (at 15) was superb at opportunity-taking, but not quite as instrumental as the three above in opportunity-making. Asiata at prop always made excellent metres in the hard carry, his consistently good technique into and around the defenders' tackle was superb to watch.

As usual, the enjoyable highlights vid above is mostly flashy backs work, but the real key to the team's excellence was in their dominating forwards work that provided Mason and Nucifora (at 9) with vast quantities of fast, clean ball.

The team was also exceptionally well coached by Jason Gilmore, who IMO should be given a crack at Aus Schoolboys sooner rather than later as, bluntly, I think Philpotts is well passed his best.

Its hard to comment on who was the better team out of BSHS 09 or Churchie 14. I think you couldn't know unless you had seen most games of both seasons, which I highly doubt any of us have. I have heard the big reputation of the BSHS team, but in 09 the scholarship race was just beginning really and State High were at the forefront of that race back then. This would have to be taken into consideration looking at the differences in how much each team beat other teams by. With more elite players being involved in the game today, the standard is higher and the game faster (in my opinion). A TSS and Churchie father told me Churchie were magic on the weekend at the sevens and no team came within 20 points of them. I also know that Fox, Ponga, Sua, Asiata and Scott-Young all picked up the major awards for the First XV team this year.
