When watching or listening to whole host of supposed unbiased hosts on current affairs that is different indeed.

A question for Runner and formerflanker.

Across any parts of the media, please name some hosts or even journos you'd consider unbiased.

Jennie Brockie and Lee Lin Chen SBS, Simon O'Donnell ABC, as a start

Jenny Brockie hosts a show that mostly isn't very political in its topics of conversation.

Lee Lin Chin is a newsreader and has zero ability to editorialise in her role.

Simon O'Donnell as in the former cricketer? I can't say I've seen/heard him on the ABC.

I don't know if you read Fairfax press, but out of interest, where would you position Peter Hartcher and Mark Kenny in terms of left and right?

Sir Christopher of Whine has started a petition on change.org against the ABC closing facilities in his electorate. Seriously. You couldn't make this stuff up.
He is a front-bench minister, FFS.
Smoking Joe said that "the age of entitlement is over", but prissie-Chrissie doesn't think that it should apply to him or his electorate.
What a self-serving political opportunist.

Hypocrisy, thy name is Pyne.

The thing about democracies is that the dickheads get a voice as well. He has a right to collect signatures on a petition and the ABC has the right to ignore him (as they should)

Look at the sort of shows that the popular conservative hosts have in Australia.

Most of them are more about them than any particular issue or theme. Particularly in terms of the talkback radio hosts, their shows are often just soap boxes for them to argue their case.

Maybe part of it comes down to what sort of careers interest certain people.

Why are there so few conservatives in comedy or fine arts or acting?

Perhaps that are busy creating wealth and paying taxes.

Yep. (What is the world coming to when you and I agree?)
Here we have Pyne as one of the most targeted conservative politicians and he is giving one of his major opponents a leg-up!
Crazy days indeed.

A question for Runner and formerflanker.

There are lots of biased commentators and news outlets in the media, I agree. BUT as a society we can choose to ignore, not buy, not invest in, turn off etc their platforms. Then their papers, TV stations, blogs etc loose money and perhaps go out of business.
The ABC on the other hand is funded by all taxpayers yet it predominantly runs a left-of-centre philosophy, irrespective of the number of conservatives who live in the community served by the ABC.
Being a taxpayer funded body the ABC should be balanced in its coverage of societal issues including politics. Quite clearly it doesn't do that and probably hasn't being balanced for over 40 years.
We can ignore biased commentators in the private sector, but we have no choice but to fund the biased ABC. It's time for a change to that concept.

what about
Stephen McDonell

Stephen McDonell has been the ABC’s China correspondent, based in Beijing, since 2006. McDonell has won three Walkley Awards, including for his coverage of the 2008 earthquake centred in China's Sichuan province.
I have seen Insight cover IS, immigration etc etc all controversial and like Throsby before her an excellent fascillitator rather than the centre of attention. Tony Jones etc could get lessons.

Hartcher is a person who I feel calls it as he sees it for both side and Kenny is more Lib but has put the boot in if he feels the need and much hated by the ABC and Chasers ( waste of my money) group the ABC continues with. On commercial TV their costly antics and purile humour would not be tolerated.

Remember these two are not paid public servants like ABC employees.

Every time a review is done into the potential bias of the ABC it is found to be fair and reasonable. The most recent one which looked at asylum seeker stories found that only 4 out of 97 stories could be considered to contain bias.

My original question was in relation to who you considered bi-partisan in the media. I am trying to guage where you see the centre lying because I think it is somewhere to the right of centre based on your comments.

This is a pretty good point. Bias is probably a subjective concept based on perception as much as anything else.

Just watching that First Contact show last night on sbs and seeing the perceptions of the 6 white participants being challenged, I could see them changing their attitudes as they were presented with information about aboriginals they previously had not had. I'll be tuning in again tonight.

But Malcolm is the ABC's champion! No way would he criticise it.
PS - what was the conservative/left ratio tonight on Q&A? 4/2! The imbalance always happens.

Bias (or supposed bias) is not the only turn off. As a Labor leaning voter (though I have occasionally voted Liberal - never Green or any other far right or far left options) I have never taken to Q&A. I think Tony Jones (is that his name) is the most self promoting, obnoxious interviewer on TV - a mirror reflection of Alan Jones et al on commercial radio. I won't watch him as I wont listen to those other d/heads.

The privatisation of ABC's news and current affairs would have consequences - it would be hard, if not impossible, for a sitting government to influence them.

Be careful for what you wish.

Ultimatley the concept for me is that the ABC program host can be an intellectual inquisitor in an appropriate way as is the BBC's Hardtalk presenter.
They can be a fascilitator such as Jennie Brockie who gains the most from each contributor and is not the cetre of the universe like the group at the ABC.
The third who can get points out of people by an approach which is inclusive and not perceved as a threat. Look at what David Frost at his height did to Richard Nixon.
All done without a sense of bias.
I watched Q&A and 7.30 and even the breakfast show and saw bias and a lack of ability to do what I have descibed above.

I would say Kerry O'Brian. Nobody really got a free kick when he hosted the 7:30 report. Just focuses on cutting through the spin they all try to bung on in interviews. Keating, Howard and those after have all said he was a tough man to face.

Actually I would like to see him host Q&A.
