Unfortunately, the dickheads on bikes (motor or man power) give the rest a bad name

e.g. fucktard riding on the T-Way at Northmead felt a bus got a bit too close to him, so catches him at the next stop and punches the driver. Well mate, you're not supposed to be ON THE FUCKING T-WAY! But there are a large group of cyclists who get a bit militant about their rights, and start going over the line on these things.

e.g. motorbike riders who perform lane filtering at high speeds i.e. lane splitting. Even some who do it at low speeds are in breach, but will never get caught unless they do it right in front of a cop.

I've got nothing against either group provided everyone is obeying the laws.

In fact as a cyclist in Western Sydney I'm smart enough to know that bogans fucking HATE cyclists* and so I stay off the road wherever possible, because people out here simply don't have the awareness for cyclists. I actually feel safer around the CBD even though there is more traffic, because generally its slower moving and drivers are a bit more patient. And less bogan.

* except female cyclist in lycra. Those they have lots of time for.

I think you would have to be insane to think it is safe to use a road where 2 ton plus metal objects move at 4 times your speed and your only protection is essentially a curved esky lid on your head and your "wits", especially head down, bum up, in a pack

There are no winners ...everyone involved carries the scars , Motor Vehicle drivers need to look ahead for cyclists - slow down if possible and give them as wide a berth as is practicable , cyclists need to consider if in a bike lane don't then go four abreast onto the vehicle lane (you are tempting fate) - FRONT ROWERS AND LOCKS should not ride bicycles ! Motor bike riders (are mad!) ...I don't think the public are aware just how hard it is to control those beasts and that when they corner they have to commit to that action with little chance to avoid a change in circumstances. Everyone needs to take a chill pill on the road ...and pedestrians also need to be aware and observe the road rules as well . Cyclists would help their cause if they stopped shooting between moving traffic and creeping through Red Lights and going through stop signs , Motor bikes ... I don't know ...I have friends who ride high performance bikes and take them via trailers to Eastern Creek around 6 - 10 times a year because its just to hairy in the city , I could go to the stereotype of the Volvo driver , gender and lets not go there . Motor Vehicle drivers need to respect and understand ultimately the power is very much in their hands and carry that responsibility and privilege accordingly ( And that means staying off the phone as well ) . I've lost 2 friends to a car accidents , 5 to motor bikes and one cyclist maimed ...all preventable and all pointless .... so Get off the Grog , Get off the Drugs , Get off the Phone , Get off the Speed , Get off the Attitude AND SAVE !!!! When it comes to the road Ego is a dirty word , Skyhooks were wrong .....

I love cycling and the worst day on the bike is better than the best day in the car, but you do have to be *very* careful. I wouldn't ride to work if it wasn't upwards of 80% cycle path. People talk about Australia being a terrible place to be a cyclist, but like most things it depends on where you are. I feel very fortunate to have several excellent cycle paths near me, though I understand that it's not the same for everyone.

Bottom line is that drivers, cyclists and pedestrians have to respect each others space and each other. There is way too much hostility and a lot of it is fuelled by latest outrageous outrage in the media. There are some outlets (The Courier Mail seems to be the worst offender) that can't go a week without fanning the flames of conflict between these three groups. Everyone chill the fuck out, obey the road rules and keep your eyes open.

The Courier Mail doesn't fan the flames of conflict; they throw petrol on there and if there isn't enough hear from their previous bonfire, then they throw a match on there too.
I can't stand the CM. This type of obvious divisive sensationalism is their go-to piece and makes up the majority of their pages.
Sadly though, more often than not, they nail their demographic and their readers just lap it up!

Thought i'd revive this thread with some regular updates from Melbourne.

I've recently bought a new bike and have been riding the long way to work in an effort to get a bit fitter. The route includes the Kew Boulevard, which is a stretch of uninterrupted road that follows the Yarra in the inner city. It's really popular with cyclists, and unfortunately has been the focus of regular tack attacks in the last 15 months or so.

So I'll keep a running tally here in case my northern cousins were under the impression that Melbourne is some sort of cycling mecca.

Well, basically people who are ****s.

What shits me most is a couple of utter scumbags in each group - motorists, pedestrians, cyclists - give the rest a bad name in the whole car v bike v person debate.

In this case, I'd suggest bored kids.

I used to cycle Kew Boulevard a fair bit in my Melbourne incarnation. Good ride. Shame about dickheads chucking tacks around.

That's bullshit, who would do something so moronic?

Mate, who knows. It's been going on for ages. Local council handballs it to state government, state government fudges and puts it at the bottom of their priorities.

It's pure spite. The road is very wide, has no lights or intersections and easily supports the many cyclists and motorbike riders, along with cars making an inefficient cut through.

The anti-cycling lobby isn't as rabid down here as it appears in Sydney and Brisbane, but that counts for little when you've got c*nts throwing tacks.

I saw a story recently that someone had been putting home made spikes on the lawn in a public park in Melbourne. They were twists of wire designed that there would always be a spike pointing upwards no matter how they landed.

That sort of behaviour is so pathetic and antisocial.

John Thornett (49)
Yep, in a very popular Fitzroy park. That was particularly nasty as they were a) designed to injure and main, as you pointed out, and b) targeted grassy areas where kids and dogs play.

I used to live in the Netherlands and my Dutch mates are flabbergasted by the anti-cycling sentiment in Australia.

Mainly because we don't have the same kind of social conscience they do, and our government is afraid of pissing off their mates in the fossil fuel industries.

Tex - if you do get caught out this may help: http://www.hells500.com/category/boulietacks/

Have also heard on another forum that the head policeman down at Booroondara is a cyclist who rides that route and is very keen to catch the person responsible. Given the amount of publicity 3AW have given it at points in time its likely there are copycat dickheads out there doing it too.

Cheers stoff. Boroondara council pointed me towards an app called Snap Send Solve which reports incidents to the nearest council.

Not that it'll do much as they were buck-passing and crying about resourcing when I last spoke to them.

Great initiative from the Hells 500 guys. I don't know them but enjoy their online presence. The Everesting thing is briliant.
