Except Tubs Taylor. Fuck that guy is distilled inanity, if that's even possible. Never has anything original to say, and if you pay attention, quite often says something that the other comms mentioned about 30 seconds beforehand.

When I was watching Aus v Sco the other day, Taylor was commentating with Mark Waugh.

Taylor asked Waugh when the last time Michael Clarke opened the batting for Australia in an ODI. Waugh said a while ago but he didn't know. Taylor kept pushing him and gave a hint that it was against South Africa. Waugh said "I don't know, maybe 2011?"

Taylor said 2009 was the answer.

Waugh pushed him and said what was the point of all that.

Taylor said that it was just commentary.

Waugh said "is it?".

I thought it was pretty poignant. The Channel 9 mentality is that spending a couple of minutes talking about some meaningless statistic that their stats man has put in front of them counts as detailed analysis rather than actually talking about the cricket that is being played.

Clearly the disdain for the Channel 9 commentators extends beyond Australian living rooms.

Can't stand the channel 9 cricket commentators, they are only topped for worst commentators by the channel 9 league commentators (who helped drive me away from watching league altogether). I was a very happy and relieved rugby supporter when channel 10 took the rugby rights away from channel 9.

I was in the media centre at the cricket the other day. God Brendan Julian is a striking human being. Tall, chiseled, has a baritone voice you can hear from the other side of the room. Reminds me a little of myself, actually.

I don't think his commentary or insight is particularly good, but as the Nick McArdle style straight man he does a pretty decent job IMO.

A mate of mines Mrs is a nurse at one of the private hospitals in Perth. Back when BJ was playing he had to go in for a knee op. Fair to say every single lady in the place was queuing up to make sure the big fella was OK.

At least you are lucky that you are in England and away from it at the moment. Back here we have the permanently breathless Mark Nicholas who seems like a lovely bloke, but manages to speak for a long time without actually saying anything and then we have Tubby Taylor, Ian Healy, Shane Warne and Brett Lee. It's a new low point in cricket commentary - they rarely say anything of note about what is happening on the field. In an a final of olympic standard, Brett Lee wins gold as being the most inane.

Most of it is describing what we have just seen or juvenile sniggering about some dressing room in-joke when they were playing. David Lloyd and Michael Vaughan are head and shoulders above them - we can play cricket but the poms have a much better style of talking about it.

Yeah I was remarking to Mrs TBH what a bunch of inane drivel we were hearing t'other night when that confederacy of dunces was commentating.

Shane Warne seems to have done more damage to English cricket with the mic than he did with the ball. Has filled their impressionable heads with relentless propaganda to the effect that reckless cricket is "attacking" cricket, and should be pursued at all times in all circumstances. He's not exactly subtle, but it looks like it's working. Go Shane! Go somewhere far, far away.

Apparently we should be grateful for what we have: http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/901103.html

The reasoning being that, even though our commentators are matey, inane buffoons, at least they are free matey, inane buffoons. I can't say I agree.

Followed a few more links and apparently commentators covering Indian matches aren't allowed to talk about selection or administration matters. So discussion about whether someone's spot in the side is in danger or even the state of the pitch is verboten. One commentator was reportedly disciplined for referring to Kohli as a potential captain-in-waiting, and was dropped from the roster.

It does sound pretty bad, but if Indians are happy for the BCCI to be corrupt, authoritarian bastards against other cricket boards then they can put up with them being corrupt, authoritarian bastards towards them too. They should understand the notion of karma.

It was certainly surprising to me that you couldn't get the cricket on TV in the UK unless you had Skysports. Most hotels we stayed at only had a BBC Radio Channel through the TV so you could listen to it but not see it.

On radio, the cricket is broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Extra which is a digital / internet radio station.

Welcome to encroaching commercialism BH.

How is the atmos at those little English grounds? Lords I imagine has a bit of a vibe, but Cardiff looked dead as last week's stew.

Their largest cricket ground is smaller than our smallest I believe? How the hell does anyone enjoy slagging Poms off in THAT environment?

Read the article and it actually makes me glad for our idiots in a way. The situation in India is indeed dire, but then again corruption and nepotism is a way of life over there.

If you have grounds that can take 60-100 thousand people, then there's a distinct chance that riff-raff and common people will get in and lower the tone of the whole thing. Keep the grounds small and only the right sort of chaps can get tickets.;)

Classic Tubby Taylor commentary : "or do you go back to a guy that's given you 63 solid test matches. To be fair the last 12 haven't been great".

Just destroys the credibility of his own argument.
