It's an issue that I've alluded to before, but what happens if there's only 2 or 3 A teams in these higher age groups?

One assumes that teams who don't consider themselves A teams (and probably aren't the same standard as the 2 or 3 genuine A teams) will be pushed up. Hardly a satisfactory situation, but I can't see any alternative.

At this age group this has been happening for years - at least 7 that I've been involved in. Sometimes there are 3 "genuine A"teams sometimes more, but whoever gets pushed up doesn't like getting smashed. It's worse when there are 4 or 5 genuine A teams, and only 2 or 3 get pushed up, it makes for a very long and dispiriting season for the least able !

That's the impression that I've got over the past few years as well. I haven't been directly involved, but I've heard the dispirited talk from teams lining up to get smashed week in week out and how they look forward to the games which they know will be an even contest.

I don't really have a solution unfortunately, but as I have read through the last couple of pages I've noted quite a few people saying that they'll get numbers for a team but only in B or C grades.

Well done to Sydney Juniors for getting a mention about the Under 18 Colts competition in the Herald today:

U18's Colts. This new comp is going to be played inline with the Sydney Premierships clubs on Saturdays. This will not only fill the void for rugby players outside the school system but provide more opportunities to those wanting to play. If wanting more details go here.

Unfortunately, the kick goes wide of the posts when the link on the article in the paper takes the reader to http://www.juniors.rugbynet.com.au/ (a superseded web page). Fortunately this page has another link to click on to take the reader to the current SJRU web page at http://juniors.rugby.com.au/

Following the last link to finally arrive at the Juniors web page. There is nothing on that page about any Under 18 competition, but I can find out:
  • how to register with a club for the 2014 season,
  • Special Needs Rugby,
  • What is happening with the SJRU Finals on 7 September, provided I download the 2014 Events Schedule,
  • that the 2014 Representative teams have been announced, and
  • SJRU have adopted a new constitution.
Marketing 101. If you are going to tell the people about something, then make sure that the people can find more out about it.

It is hard to be positive in the face of examples like this.

Alas, this is the sort of administration that is served up at most levels of the game.

Last night's gen blue game another example. I was talking to a mate last night about the match, his reaction "Gee they kept that match a secret didn't they?" Sigh.

EDIT: And I only was aware of the match through G&GR

Actually HJ, regarding the Sydney Juniors website I can't even find an active link to the SJRU Rep teams that were showcased in October, or the previous Zone teams that were picked after the State Champs in June and showcased in July.

If I was a club, Rep or school Scout where would I find the names of boys aged between 14-17 that I might be interested in?

You'd need to have minions reporting talent to you and/or ambitious parents beating a path to your door.:)

How are clubs going as we get close to season start?

Lot of clubs seem to be struggling to maintain numbers.

I understand that in 12s Harlequins have gone from 3 teams to 1 and that most of their A team from 2014 have gone to another club.

I've also heard of players from the peninsula playing for Gordon junior clubs, for reasons that I'm not aware.

These 2 developments don't fill me with confidence for the future of SJRU competitions.

Below is the list of team nominations for the Sunday competition for this year, with last year's number in brackets:

U10s: 66 (65)
U11s: 65 (63)
U12s: 55 (50)
U13s 45 (42)
U14s 41 (38)
U15s 32 (35)
U16s: 20 (18)
Opens: 7 (12)

Opens affected by the U18 Saturday Colts comp of which there are 7 teams nominated.

There will undoubtedly be changes as the season draws nearer, but on those numbers, there is certainly a comparable number of teams from last year, if not a few more.

From what I gather there will be two Opens competions administered by SJRU: A Saturday U18 competition (running 11 rounds until the June Long weekend) with an 11 am kick off before Colts 3rds, and a Sunday Opens competition involving 7 teams (down from 12 last year).

Questions about "ownership" of the Saturday U18 competition in the Colts Thread have been answered with "It's a SJRU competition". It would appear from banter on the Colts threads that there are probably 8 of the 12 Clubs that will run a U18 team, so there could be a slight increase in player numbers in the Opens category. All should be revealed this weekend with the first round of Colts rugby.

@Druid, Do you know the numbers of teams nominating for Saturday and Friday Night Competitions?

That looks good. I know that at our club a couple of age groups are looking very shaky with the second team, which has been entered but might not be viable.

I'm still really concerned about that drop off between 11s and 12s - its almost 20%.

Friday Night as follows:

U10s: 16 (16)
U11s: 13 (11)
U12s: 7 (12)
U13s: 5 (0)

As far as I know there are no Junior comps run on a Saturday apart from the Under 18s Colts, although SJRU may try and run a 7's comp like they did last year..

Most of the drop off between 11s and 12s in team numbers will be due to the minimum player numbers increasing from 12 - 15 and maximum player numbers (allowed on the day) going from 18 - 22 players. Hence clubs with multiple age groups may drop a team but maintain the same or similar numbers.

Is the Saturday district 18s really only running until the state championship on June weekend?

What happens to players after the June long weekend?
