BH, I wondered if Wallabies were perhaps borrowing the All Blacks idea of wide running loosies (see Kaino and Read) and the reason they can use it reasonably well is that the AB midfield tend to snaffle as much ball at breakdown as loosies at times.

Fair comment, though the AB combo is arguably more balanced than ours. McCaw still hits the breakdown hard, as does Kaino. Read ranges wider but has the license due to the tight work of the other two. It's a great set up for them.

Mohoje. 1 missed tackle(try) and an offside(penalty). Sure made an impact. Just sorry it was for the opposition.

Politics politics politics. No idea why I even watch this crap any more. If Meyer isn't fired after this World Cup(we'll be lucky to win a semi-final), he'll definitely quit anyway.

Well played, Aus. Did exactly what was necessary to beat what was in front of you.

Anyone else love Nigel Owens, though? Obviously he doesn't always make 100% calls, but no ref does and he's right up there. He clearly just calls it as he sees it, and the players seem to enjoy playing under him - except Stephen Moore who perhaps needs a muzzle. He clearly has authority on the field, without trying to be the center of attention. He could well ref the world cup final, except if Wales make it that far.

Regarding the All Blacks, I think we'll be lucky to be within 10 points. Carter is staying behind, which is a blessing in disguise for the ABs since he's been overrated for quite a few years now and just doesn't have the impact he used to. And he's slow. And his kicking's not all that either. Just don't tell the AB's that.

One would also wonder if JPP is there becouse of the racial quotas? I don't think his form justifies selection.

Forcefan has posted ruck stats on the comment section of the blog post "five things we learned from the game" and he suggests Hooper hit 41 attacking and 4 defensive rucks, that was most of the team. Pocock hit 23 in total so they had approx the same ruck/min rate.
Waiting for the blog post of FF (Folau Fainga'a) to see what kind of impact their involvements had.

I wasn't a huge fan of Owens in that he allowed the defending team a lot of leeway at the breakdown. I watch to see attacking rugby, not teams killing attacking rugby.

BUT he was extremely consistent I thought, which is all you should hope for from an official, because they're humans and they all read slightly different interpretations.

I think the Boks dominance of the breakdown was assisted by the wallabies not being intelligent and playing to the referee.

I think Owens usually gives more slack to the attacking team and also seemed abit quicker with the whistle than usual, but as you said, very consistent indeed.

It also seemed that it was ok to hit a jumping player as long as they had their eyes on the ball. With a SH referee I assume we would have got a few penalties for interfering in the air

Edit: just watched the video of Izzys takes, they were interfering in the air, plain and simple, hope that is not the way it is reffed at the RWC

Yeah, Moore had a word with Owens about that late in the second half, because it was obvious that they weren't having an honest go for the ball............

Congrats to the Wallabies and their supporters. Great win to snatched right in the end. Pretty sure this will give the Wallabies much needed confidense going forward.

Also feel good about the Springbokke. They played really well and gave it their all. Young guns like Pollard/Kriel/Ellende/Etsebet showed what they can do.

Stephen Moore 'needs a muzzle'? Good luck getting it on him, mate.

After thinking about this match for a day or two the phrase, "curate's egg", just won't go away. My thoughts:

1. A win's a win. Can't get much better than that, especially due to a microscopically scored try in the 83rd minute.

2. I've been watching rugby in Australia for, about, 50 years. In that time I'm continually bemused how we haven't learnt how to commit an adequate number of forwards (or others) to a breakdown to ensure we secure our ball, or put pressure on our opponents'. To watch the Bokke pigs march the pill up the paddock and note Stephen Moore standing next to said maul (to what end Christ only knows) astounds me. Did he learn this technique from Al Baxter, perhaps? The hesitation in our commitment to the breakdown cost us dearly in the first 50 minutes, something I sincerely hope TGC will rectify instantly.

On this point I've watched forwards bludging at the breakdown all the way from under 12s at schoolboy level through Colts and grade and up to Super Rugby and tests. Until we learn to enjoy commitment at the tackle/maul/ruck we won't win too many more RWCs.

3. Hooper played like a man possessed with outstanding tackling, linking and running, while Pocock was the usual beast at the coal-face when an arm-wrestle was required to secure competed ball. That result notwithstanding I WOULDN'T PLAY THEM TOGETHER AGAIN! The balance in the Bokke back-row should be a lesson in effectiveness: Louw and Berger were magnificent. They complemented each other very well (and probably attracted post-match compliments for their play.....). TGC has to decide whose style of play's required for individual opponents and select accordingly. I can see benefits from either player coming on late in a match with both Hooper's speed and Pocock's physicality potential match-winners, but I'd like to see a more balanced back row run on. There again, who'd be a selector.

4. The scrum went OK, just. The age-old Aussie habit of meerkatting bit us on the arse a few times, I suspect TGC will have stern words to offenders. The few times the scrum was screwed and pinged looked like it was the LH side; is Slipper carrying an injury? I suspect he is, and should be sent to the infirmary post-haste to ensure he's fixed for the RWC.

5. A coupla players had quiet games: Kepu, Skelton and Higginbotham. Keps must have clocked up a million miles this year and should be carefully managed. Big Willie's still coming to terms with the pace of test rugby with his huge frame; he, too, should also be judiciously paced in the RC. Higgers was very disappointing, is he up to test rugby?

6. The halves were adequate, considering our ruck/maul ball wasn't as secure as it should be. Genia started with some confident play and good decision-making. Then the dreaded pre-passing steps crept in, to be followed by a coupla box kicks. I honestly felt the quality Genia was reappearing in the first half; did the wounded knee affect his battle for the ball? Cooper probably tried a bit too hard to play a wide game too early, as is his want. With Fardy, Hooper, Kuridrani and Folau following play around maybe a tighter game would work better. Play looked a lot crisper and more direct when Phipps came on with his lightning quick sprints to the breakdown and instant passing. A lesson to all young scrummies.

For just one match could we please see Phipps, Cooper and To'omua at 9/10/12? I'd love to see how well Quade'd fare with fast ball.

7. The quality of the reserves was very encouraging for the immediate future of the Wallabies. How long has it been since that could be said?

8. The wingers for the first test undoubtedly justified their selection following on from their Super season. But, I'd dearly like to see one winger with searing pace, which neither Horne nor AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) possess. Rob's a crucial part of the defence when the backs move from attack to defence phase, if anyone can be trusted to flatten Nonu or Roberts or any other big bruiser aiming to burst through the midfield it's Rob Horne (not that AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper)'s a slouch when it comes to tackling, but Horne's better). AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) must be the perfect outside back reserve. If either Tomane or Speight put on a good show when they get the opportunity I'd be delighted.

9. My last comment's directed to those supporters in gold from north of the Tweed, and I do so carefully. If that match wasn't testament to what a shithouse job RG's done with his charges the last few years, well, nothing is. With just a few sessions from TGC Genia and Horwill showed glimpses of the players they were, and still could be if they'd been motivated and inspired this year. I suspect there isn't enough time to bring them both up to speed, which is a shame. And a concluding reason to sack RG tomorrow. It is absolutely imperative for the health of Australian rugby the two biggest unions continue to develop their squads and produce competitive teams. Like many Tahs supporters I was very critical of the coaching staff during the Hickey/Foley era, just as many are now of RG and his assistants. Reds HQ, please fix this instantly if not sooner.

Imagine if he yapped to the ref as much as, say JdV? He's the captain, FFS, heshould be talking to the ref.

Owens was clearly getting annoyed with him though, he needs to watch that. No use talking to the ref at the wrong time or constantly nagging him. Just end up on the wrong side of refs that way.

And on par with the crowd there for the Broncos vs Wests Tigers NRL game there yesterday, which was just a regular round game, although with the benefit of Sunday afternoon.

Lot of ground to make up.

I'm not saying: "It's the biggest crowd ever". I'm just saying we expected even fewer people. I talked with the community manager of Suncorp FB account and they expected around 35k. I'm just saying that was higher than we expected here, I would have been happy with 45k or something like that.

Riiiiight. Jean De Villiers only talks to the ref when he actually has a point. Moore seems to think it's a free-for-all and he can query any decision regardless of how ridiculous it is to query it.

There is no right or wrong side of Nigel Owens.

Lol, Bismarck also quipped something to the extent (When the Wallabies won a Penalty) "That's a good call ref" and the commentators were laughing (I think at Nigel's response - although I didn't hear it).

It has to be taken into account Robshaw is English; they are playing the French. Both Wales and the French despise England - well, most nations have some issue with England to some degree. He He.

So, is Genia at No 9 and both Horne and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) on the wings changing things up and 'going in a different direction'?

Horne and AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) made sense but was not going in a new direction. The Genia/Cooper selections were but didn't go so well.
I'd like to see Phipps/Foley back this week and most likely Tomane will be on one wing.
Sadly Higgers did not take his chance but may have been better with Pocock there instead of Hooper to start.

If you say so. Sample size = 1; possible observer bias.
My point is, captains should talk to the ref to clarify whatever they want, they're foolish if they don't IMO. Best way to know exactly what the ref wants, which clearly changes from game to game.

I have been thinking about "Higgers" work on the weekend

He may have looked worse because of the game plan not working successfully in the first half.

We seemed to have Fardy & Higgers posted as wide support right and left; much wider that we usually play (sweeping generalisation but bare with me).

Now it didn't work and the best result of the plan in the first half was destroyed by Higger's kick (lack of trust in the system IMHO) but I would not be surprised if it is given another go.

What it lacked in the first half was effective cleanout work from the balance of the forwards, mediocre technique and slow clearance from the tackle area; and that led to turnovers and stopped any momentum, but when it did in the second half ...............................

I reckon we will see the same forwards rolled out with the expectations that they will be better for the run.

What happened in your view? I honestly can't work out how you get such a low crowd to a Springboks match - a massive and hated rival side of Australia's, the number 2 ranked team in the world and in a critical match leading into the world cup?

I mean FSS Queenslanders turned out in force to fill Suncorp out to watch a bunch of pommy soccer players prance around in a meaningless practice match against the 'Brisbane Meows' or whatever they're called. Why couldn't they turn up for a classic and top class Rugby grudge match that actually means something?

I had no idea soccer had such a following up there.
