Someone said the NRL wanted to help and give some of their players for the Olympics. So far they have only stolen a player

I've never been able to say this before but I heard from a very reliable source that the ARU are looking at Nick Cummins for the Sevens program for next year.

Can we grab James Roberts from the Titans if we are stealing nrl players? He would kill it at 7s on the wing.

Cummins has played 7s before but that would be a pretty uninspiring choice. Can't see him performing that well in 7s.

Big shock. Hopefully, it is as it's reported (and hopefully the family issue isn't too serious). There has been an exodus of 7s players of late, especially so close to the Olympics so I'm really hoping these events aren't related.

It seems an odd move, a year out from the Olympics, the biggest event Sevens has ever had, to quit your coaching gig. It would have to be a really major family issue to up and quit I would have thought. Richard Graham was a good 7s player, maybe he could take on the role instead and free up the Reds head coach position!

The more crucial thing for us is that it's less than three months out from our Olympics qualifying event.

Good point, forgot that the men's team hasn't actually qualified yet. Very strange, if there were any players considering switching to Sevens you would think that they would want some certainty over the coaching role - maybe that's the issue - they didn't want to switch with John in charge. Who would be a serious contender for the role? I wouldn't want to see Walsh switch from the women's team as he seems to be going well with them and that might be detrimental to their team if he moved. Coaching both men's and women's would be tricky, although maybe he will have to do it until they qualify (if they do) and then the men's role will be more attractive to a coach (definitely taking a team to the Olympics).

We were a few months too late when we recruited John and many of the top candidates were already locked up. I'd suggest things are worse now. Wouldn't be too many roles as appealing as ours around the world, full-time coaching gig etc but I doubt we are going to get a great coach to ditch a sure thing in the Olympics for a maybe

Hasn't Kenya Sevens imploded recently?
I think their former coach, also former long time Saffer 7's coach, Paul Treu may be available if the price is right.

He would be a great get if there are no former Australian 7's players available who are prepared to jump ship from their tenured position at a Super Rugby Franchise.

I wonder if Treu would be interested in getting involved anywhere. He seemed pretty burned out after his Kenya experience.

John has apparently got a new job in elite coach development with Wales. Sounds a dubious departure to me.

He was by any standard a total flop, best that he departed, though the poor decision to appoint him will now have far less than optimal consequences this close to Rio 2016.
