Sounds like it was a fantastic game of rugby out at Bellevue Hill yesterday which could have gone either way.

The other two matches went pretty much as expected.

Shore First XV have only won 2 games over the last 31 GPS matches. Really don't know what can be done about the team performance. Each week they seem to give it their best, but frankly its just not good enough for the standard of rugby that is being played

Sadly, Shore seem to be following the trajectory formerly seen at High and Grammar. While Shore has a bigger rugby demographic than either of those schools, a look at the Shore fixture sheet will note that the soccer column has been getting longer and the rugby column has been shrinking as well as a little AFL box at the end of the rugby column.

The process may take longer, but it seems that it's an issue that some don't want to face. Not sure what the answer is or if there is an answer.

In results from the nursery, I gather there is a kid from Coonabarabran , at scots , that is proving a star in the making

Always bit early to make calls on under 13s... But certainly one to watch in future years

Also with rowing so dominant at Shore in summer, some "rugby" boys are minimising the risk of injury by avoiding participation in rugby to give them the best chance of making the 1st VIII.

At this stage of the season, with 3 rounds left, the infirmaries seem to be filling. Those wards are certainly not the exclusive domain of Shore Rugby, despite the impressions from reading this thread. All teams to some greater or lesser extent, have already had to cope with filling vacancies in their top flights. But the timing of the injuries, and the "key-ness" of the players hurt, is as arbitrary as anything else in life.

Losing Tom Wright and Blaise Barnes for the season, even with the vaunted depth of Joe Boys Rugby, puts them at a disadvantage in closing out their season in the way they'd like. That won't be assisted if they also lose Aus Rep hooker and Joeys Captain, Tom Horton, hurt at Bellevue Hill yesterday.

The Riverview coaches pulling Macgregor from the field yesterday, especially as the game sounded well won by then, is just plain sensible, both as to player welfare and to team management given how important Macgregor is to the Blue and White.

I haven't done any statistical analysis (will leave that to others far better qualified), but there does seem to be an inverse correlation between injuries to first choice players and their teams' current ladder positions - New on top on that metric, Shore at the other end, and the rest filling their respective spots accordingly. (Coincidentally, it'd seem the same thing is panning out in the QLD GPS 1st XV Rugby Comp.)

Can anyone who was at the Armidale v Joeys 3rds XV give a run down of the game, scoreline and the best players from each team?

A quick look at the updated tables sees some important games this week.

1sts
Joeys v Newington - a win to NC will see them till 2 points clear wwhile a win by SJC would give Scots a sniff of a joint premiership

2nds
Joeys v Newington - SJC are 2 points clear of NC. If NC can repeat their round one win, the will be joint leaders while a win to SJC will see them reasonably secure 4 points clear.

3rd
Grammar and Joeys are equal leaders on 10.

Grammar have Armidale and High both at home and a bye

Joeys have Newington and Kings at home and Shore away

The trophy could rest on this week's Grammar v Armidale match

Joeys have it. They have three games which they should win. Grammar has two games. Even if they win against TAS, they can't do it. The fight now is for second place.

Other results from the north.
Joeys 8ths 20 Armidale 3rds 10

Joeys 16B 37 Armidale 16A 19
Joeys 16D 36 Armidale 16B 5

Joeys 15B 7 Armidale 15A 14 (good job TAS)

Joeys 14B 49 Armidale 14A 15

Joeys 13B 29 Armidale 13A 5
Joeys 13D 65 Armidale 13B 0

One of the things that we are all interested in is depth. We need depth if rugby is to succeed. One of the interesting things about Joker's results (my thanks, Joker) lies in the comparison between the TAS A and Joeys B teams. Last year and the year before there were some real blow-outs in favour of the minnows when the minnow As were playing several grades below. Despite the size of some of the Joey's victories, I found these numbers mildly encouraging. Numbers remain numbers so far as the number of boys is concerned, but we need new forms of thinking if we are going to head off the soccer challenge.

I had the pleasure of watching the Joeys 3rd XV take on TAS on Saturday, it was a crisp sunny Armidale day and a good size crowd had assembled for the main game.

The Joeys boys stood in the centre waiting for the TAS boys to be cheered out by their school and I think this just added to the fire in the big Joeys 3rds team that had made the bus trip up from Sydney.

From the kick off it was apparent that the Joeys boys had come to play and the early stages were full of big hits and the TAS side was up for the battle. Joeys were controlling possession well and it was only through solid defence that TAS were holding them at bay but a blind side dash by the Joeys half back with a simply draw and pass saw him send 11 Jacob Patmore down the left hand wing to break the deadlock and see Joeys go to the halftime break up 5-0.. however they had looked dominant throughout the first half.

Shortly after the break Joeys were pressuring TAS's line and their loose head prop James Behringer managed to strip the ball in a tackle and crash over, Joeys converted to go up 12-0.

Shortly after TAS struck back after receiving a run of penalties and the 9 for TAS scooted over to hit back at 12-7.

But that was to be their only highlight for the afternoon, Joeys stepped it up and the weight of controlled possession and continued drive saw both breakaways crash over for tries to take the score to 26-7 in quick time & take the game out of reach for the TAS lads..

Joeys iced the cake with a try that started on their own 10m line and 16 phases later saw their right winger Travis Blair score in the right hand corner to take the final score to 31-7.

Both sides played the game in great spirits with great running rugby, excellent defence and some really entertaining rugby, but at the end of the day the weight of possession and positive go forward of the Joeys boys saw them take the win. But the TAS boys should be proud of their efforts I think it was the toughest opposition the Joeys boys have faced this season.

Hard to pick any standouts just a solid polished team effort by Joeys.

As a Joeys parent I just wanted to thank TAS for a great day, good positive crowd and our boys really appreciated the atmosphere and the challenge.

Thank you for this really great report. The Paul Barratt photo from the game that i posted earlier indicated the size difference. I'm glad that you enjoyed your trip to Armidale.!

I am so sorry, New has a wonderful rugby programme that has such great depth and promotes and nurtures home grown talent. And I am wrong to say otherwise. I do hope Tyrone won't be lonely next year when all the other boys leave...

Not Sure about that seeing as a lot of the team still are only in year 11. Number 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, 14 plus a majority of their seconds team being in year 11.

Highlights of the 1stXV clash at Bellevue Hill [will take a few more minutes processing until it's available in HD though]. LG welcome to embed it on blog [best watched on blog cos optimum viewing screen]. Sadly i missed the second Joey's try 'cos the cam shut down. The rest is there though. Can't believe how many times I've seen Theo Strang score from a quick tap and go near the line, defenders seem to relax when they hear the whistle, bad idea!
